Red-White Scrimmage

well - I thought I'd start the thread...
Friday is the Red-White scrimmage..starts at 8PM...(Chet Walker autographs for fans between 7-8PM)

both Dave Reynolds & Kirk Wessler were at Bradley's practice today - so hopefully we'll have some good coverage in tomorrow's paper...
(there was also a campus visitor there..)

I think based on what I have seen - people will be surprised by the athleticism, depth and development of the players...
Mike Shaw can't play...and Anthony Fields won't play (ankle)...
everyone else looks good to go, Ka'Darryl Bell is 100% after shoulder surgery last spring, and even a couple starting spots appear possibly still up for grabs...

see ya there.......

Mike Shaw can't play...and Anthony Fields won't play (ankle)

What's up with Shaw? Fields and Grier were able to play in the red and white game last year. Is Shaw hurt? or am I just missing something...

Was really hoping to see Shaw play tomorrow.

one more thing - the column today mentions that the men's basketball scrimmage won't even start until 9PM
..with warmups and 20-25 minutes of scrimmage then we're gonna have the same thing last year that a lot of fans with kids are not going to want to stay way past 10PM

There will also be a lot of Central Illinois Players there as well tonight:

6'7 Obediah Church (Mentioned in Article)
6'9 Dylan Miller (Hillsboro HS) 2015 PF/C
6'6 Cole Harper (Chatham HS) 2015 CG
6'5 Ben Sestak (Sacred Heart Griffin) 2015 Wing
6'4 Bryan Heath (Rockridge HS) 2015 Wing
6'7 Jacob Pfeiffer (Springfield Lutheran HS) 2017 PF/C
5'9 Devin Whitelow (Washington HS) 2017 PG

thanks - I hope they have a great visit and talk up the facilities...
..just curious but are any of them left handed shooters?

Says Shaw will play, Fields will be a game-time decision as will Zecevic!

Dave reported this-

Recruits on hand: More than 20 recruits, most of them highly ranked high school sophomores and juniors from Chicago, are scheduled to attend the scrimmage.

Donte Thomas, the 6-foot-6 senior forward from South Holland Thornwood who has orally committed to the Braves, will be on hand.

Another senior, 6-7 Morgan Park forward Josh Cunningham, one of the nation’s top uncommitted recruits who will make his official visit to BU on Nov. 8, is a possible attendee.

Juniors expected to come are Ed Morrow of Simeon, Prentiss Nixon of Bolingbrook, Luwane Pipkins of Bogan and Obediah Church of Springfield. A large group of Chitown sophomores are also planning to make the trip.

A recruiting source in Chicago reports that Josh Cunningham will be at the BU Red-White scrimmage. Maybe a good sign, as he was scheduled to make a visit to Minnesota, and cancelled that. He still plans to make an official visit to Bradley Nov. 8.
The same source reports that Prentiss Nixon, Marlon Stewart, and Devin Gage (2016 recruit from Chicago Curie HS) are also committed to attend tonight.

After a nice introduction for Chet Walker, the BU women are now scrimmaging. But it's an odd scrimmage setup. The current BU women's team is scrimmaging against a team made up of 3 men and 2 former women's players (Leah Kassing & Katie Yohn). There was no announcement about the format and no introductions of the opposing players. As a result, the fans in the crown are perplexed who all the new players are and why there are men.

There appear to be about 800-900 people in attendance.

Also, a group of about 15 recruits was just escorted in and seated in the court side chair seats.

Here is a picture of some of the recruits sitting in the courtside seats across from the north bench. Bradley commit Donte Thomas is in the center with the gray sweatshirt and the afro hair. Josh Cunningham is seated 3 seats to the right of him with the white shirt.

Here is my personal recap-
The scrimmage was enjoyable. The attendance was not what I expected (I estimate around 800-900), and I heard there were some people associated with Bradley who were disappointed considering all the promotion, and the Chet Walker appearance.
The women scrimmaged for two 8 minute periods and the played against a makeshift team comprised of 2 former players (Katie Yohn & Leah Kassing) plus a bunch of short, white men (?students). The opposition team played virtually no defense, and both teams shot poorly. The women's team struggled with their ballhandling and shot poorly from outside. Unless some players step up and shoot better, this could be an area of weakness for the women, too.

The men played three 8 minute periods, and they changed personnel for each period. Walt Lemon was in midseason form, and seemed to be able to drive and score whenever he wanted. His outside shot was falling, too. Omari Grier missed badly with his first couple shots, but then hit some threes as the scrimmages proceeded. Anthony Fields did not play. Stefan Zecevic did play and showed a lot of hustle, as advertised. His shot was not consistent. Jordan Swopshire looked perhaps the best of the freshmen and he has a stron body for a freshman. He shot the ball well, and got to the free throw line more than anyone. Xzavier Taylor runs the floor well, and shows athleticism around the basket, but his offensive game is not there yet. Auston Barnes has nice form on his shot, but did not score much, and he seemed foul prone. Chris Blake is a workhorse around the basket and will help us with rebounding, but he has little offensive game. And Mike Shaw played and looked very fluid, even though his shot was not falling much, either.
The other returning players looked about like expected, except Ka'Darryl Bell, who impressed me with a better handle and a better shot than he had last year. He also appears to have bulked up a little. Tyshon Pickett also looked real good.

Seeing a 2017 on the list is just weird to me. That's just a freshman! My son is a 2018 and 5'11. Didn't get an invite though.
