Remy Abell Update

If he goes, sorry to see him go and hope for the best in his future. I am not excited by such news, but it goes with the territory. I understand that these young men sign on to play with a certain coach and when he is no longer there, they want to investigate new oppurtunities. We have no idea how good he will be yet, so I am also not going to get upset over his leaving. If BU is the great school that we all believe it to be, then there will be other players to step in.

I am taking a wait and see approach.

More about Remy Abell from Jody Demling in an article about the top Sweet 16 players whom have signed loi's in their tournament.

" I won??™t include Eastern??™s Remy Abell on any list because I believe in the next week or so he will be back on the board for colleges to recruit again. He??™s not free of the letter now, so I??™ll leave him off any lists. Just know that he??™s a special talent. He has signed with Bradley but coach Jim Les was fired and he??™s trying to get out of his letter."

Thanks JG!!

Can't believe the Les-haters are surprised by these events... what did you think would happen?

I don't consider myself a Les hater.I was ready for a change. Every year there are incoming recruits that we could lose with a change. I hope they still come, and I think RA would be very good. But it actually seemed like a good year to make a change without losing much of the team. I didn't count the fact that Seniors could transfer. I missed that. But I thought the existing team would mostly stay in tact. I don't think a transfer makes much sense for most of the current players. I also think Bradley would make sense for Donovine if we hire the right coach. I think making a hire soon is important, but I guess if we have someone in mind that is still playing we have to wait. Anyway I thought we would probably lose RA, I hope he still comes, but that is the price you have to pay for change.

All I'll say is that a decision on the long-term coach and leader of this program shouldn't be based on any single player, either current or incoming.

If Remy is a "casualty" of the decision, so be it. No matter how good or bad he ends up being. But you can't let him be the sole reason behind the idea of keeping Les another year. That's just irresponsible. (of course, if you had other reasons to keep Les another year, THAT's the justification, not Remy)

I was in the give JL one more year camp and I wish this is what we would have done. But its over and JL isnt coming back. I dont understand why we have people beating this in to the ground. I dont want to bash the President for firing JL and I dont want to bash players or recruites for leaving. Its over, its done with. What I want and expect is for BU to make a great hire and that we build for the future. Why cant the fan base get on with it and get together and support BU basketball? There isnt three different camps in this there is one "Bradley basketball fans".

Lets start talking about the future, you cant change the past.

whoa...cut it out -- you're just trying to stir up fear with your "sky is falling" tone...8)

Remy Abell = Courtney Lee.....this one will haunt us for years....

Not if we hire the right coach and he gets several other good players to come here.

I'd rather have RA, but we will eventually be fine sooner or later.

Amen brother!!

I agree, obviously I want Remy to be at BU next year, but the long-term health of the program is what counts. This really shouldn't be surprising to anyone anyways, just another ripple effect of the firing, there was bound to be massive turnover, and I believe that Remy and Sam will not be the last players to "leave" the program.

Here, here!

DePaul, Wake, Evansville, SLU, Iowa, Minny, ISU, and even EKU.....so far a few schools are finding out that it's gonna be a lot closer to "later" than "sooner"

Step away from the ledge. Take a trip down memory lane.

The last "high major" recruit from KY we were in on committed to Ohio. Not TOSU, but Ohio.

Here is a 9 page thread, complete with "up and comer", "best kept secret", "top player in the state", "late bloomer", and even a Courtney Lee comparison.

He had a 3 star scout rating and a higher ESPN score than our own Remy.

http://www.bradleyfans.com/vb/showthread.php?t=11882

He averaged a stellar 2.8 ppg, playing in all 32 games, starting 3. Not exactly the impact player.

My point is not to rip Remy, but a lot of times fans get a little too worked up over recruits. If it was an exact science, a lot of coaches wouldn't lose their jobs each year.

Well said. I think many want to try and place blame and label this or that. Just move on and let the new coach build a program here.

The sky isn't falling.

The last "high major" recruit from KY we were in on committed to Ohio. ...

I knew it would only be a matter of time until this comparison was made..but here are a couple responses..

-first Ricardo IS good and will be a fine player but wasn't rated anywhere near as high as Remy and never got Big Ten and SEC coaches calling

-second -- Rico got duped -- he thought he'd get more chance to play at Ohio than at BU so chose Ohio...but instead got about what Milos got as far as opportunity to play...

BUT had he come to BU -- where Bradley ended up with a short bench -- Rico would have played a ton more here...
at Ohio...he only averaged 11 minutes per game...didn't start...and was basicaly told in their offense there -- that the PG gets the ball to the forwards (FIVE forwards averaged more playing time and FAR more shots attempted than Rico) or shoots it himself (DJ Cooper averaged 13.5 shots attempted per game)...
so -- Ricardo Johnson's first season at Ohio may not really be a good measure.......
By contrast -- Walt Lemon -- who BU landed when Rico chose Ohio -- was used as a slashing/driving guard...played twice as many minutes as Rico and attempted three times as many shots as Rico got...

So he will lead a midmajor to the Sweet 16, be a first round NBA pick, and start in the NBA Finals?

How much shall we wager? I've got a mortgage and a new car to pay for.

Not the gambling type, however, judging from the names of the coaches in attendance at some of his games, I don't think that Remy will end up at a mid-major this time!;-)

short term v long term

short term v long term

You have to fire a coach if you think it is in your best long term interest. No way should you keep a coach because you are afraid 1 recruiting class may lose some players. You have no idea how these players will pan out, they may not be good, transfer, quit, ineligible, injury.

we all know that Southside -- but that's where opinions differ on whether it IS in BU's best interest...we are all entitled to poinions, right?
