Report from ribbon cutting...Austin, Merf and...

As I reported in another thread JL was at Methodist for a ribbon cutting dedicating our new non-smoking fitness area. Watch for a report on Week and Wmbd tonite.

I started another thread because I got a small scoop and didn't want it to get lost in the other thread by those that allready viewed it.

JL and Merf both in attendance and talking with Methodist CEO Micheal Bryant who was decked out in a BU shirt and a SWEEEEET 16 hat (just like mine 8) ) purchased in Oakland.

I slid in very close to the three and eves dropped on the initial conversation. JL eventuall recognized me from the nite before as I had spoke with him a Double A's. He stepped over to me and said hi and commented it was the first time at AA's and he liked their pizza. (thats NOT the "scoop" )

The 3 joked about Matt Roth and JL said he was hoping he could use Micheal to help lure MR to BU. THey all got a huge laugh out of it knowing he (Bryant) is "Mr. IU". I will add Mr. Bryant has become a huge BU fan and a great supporter for all things Bradley....its a sincere attachment to BU allthough I'm sure his main allegiance lies with IU.

He commented that the LOI from Roth to BU or IU would be a win win for him...also said with a laugh from all 3 guys.

As JL and Bryant spoke I slid in and introduced myself to Coach Merfeld. Initial impression is that he is a very nice guy. Was content to be in the background at this event and had to be lured or coaxed to share the spotlight with JL throughout the festivities.

After some small talk of which he seemed genuinely interested in about who I was ( nobody  ) he told me his wife would actually be working at Methodist as a nurse (great...another source  )
I then asked him about Austin. He hesitated (my heart skipped)...I quickly said..."he's coming correct?" He said "oh yes, we expect him Saturday."

He told me they are concerned that he has missed all the time with the players and strength coach Wright. He stated that the paper work was tough to get all set up to get him here.

He also said something to the effect of that Austin was going to have to learn to fit in with us (BU). He said all of this with a bit of concern on his face. Kind of like a Doctor who wants to give you good news but doesn't want to have you thinking your totally out of the woods yet.

I got the impression Jims going to have his hands full with him. Again this was just MY impression.

Hopefully he'll get here and adapt quickly. Get him to the Itoo supper and he'll see how warmly the BU family will greet him.

Later Merf sought me out and just extended his hand and said thanks for the warm welcome. I told him BU fans were initially surprised he was coming here but very glad he was. I said everyone thinks he'll be a wonderful addition to BU. He said he was VERY glad to be on board.

I asked him about the percieved rift between JL and him at one time. He laughed and basically said it was NEVER an issue.

The 3 then did a shoot around all towards the BU basket. JL commented he hoped the BU basket got the most "work"...the crowd went wild

All 3 were cold with JL asking..."are there lights out here". Eventually all 3 heated up and they knocked down all the "required" shots.

Sorry for the long report.

Good report DRU- just a few questions.. is Merf a legitimate 5'8 or not? I know that you are taller than both- but am not sure about Bryant.. I think he is around 6 foot or so isn't he?

Well, sounds like Merfeld has the same concerns I do regarding Austin missing EVERYTHING this summer. The whole 'paperwork' thing doesn't sound too good either. What is this guy's story? What is so difficult? Very concerned...

Funny Chucky T....from a guy who's FIRST thing he does at work is log on to Bradley fans

Braveman....I'm 6'4"....Merf is 5'8" legit  Bryant is 6'.

BradleyBrave.....Merf didn't look VERY concerned but he did look concerned if that makes sense. I just didn't get a great feeling about the entire situation. The good news is that it sounds like he'll be here.

Paperwork issues with transcripts and all that stuff doesn't surprise me but he (Merf) just gave me a look that said.....we are in for an interesting ride with this kid. Again, take it for what its worth. He could turn out to be the best recruit we ever had. Time will tell.

Since he just completed his work at Jr. college I would guess it is taking time to get his transcripts in order and I think everyone would agree that it would have been better if he could have worked out with the team this summer; I am sure the staff knew all about this up front and believe he is a good enough player to be able to catch up with the rest of the team once he arrives and they are able to work with him ; the Itoo should be a fun night as always.

Didn't we already have an 'interesting ride' with Fears and Williams? The ride with Ray Brown and Xavier Crawford was anything but smooth. We can't afford this kid to be another one of those. I've been concerned all summer. Now I am even more concerned.

Hopefully, all the questions will be answered regarding Austin in the next couple days. Until then I have jumped on the "concerned" bandwagon.

I'm not to concerned. JL has made the right moves every time there seemed to be a question. We need to give these boys a chance to become men and trust JL.

It has NOTHING to do with trusting JL. It has everything to do with this kid being flighty and not having school and basketball as his top priorities. From the sounds of things so far it sounds like there could be a lot of drama surrounding this kid. This program doesn't need drama. We've had enough of that. We need good kids, good players, and a good team. I trust JL found a talented kid. But the kid has missed the summer, which already has one of our top assistants admittedly concerned. Why am I not allowed to be concerned as well?

My FIRST concern was that he wasn't even going to be here. Thats been lifted a bit...again until he's actually here its still a slight concern.

Once he is here I think things will smooth out...at least I hope. Get around the players...get busy with classes and start feeling the "love" from the BU community at events like the Itoo supper, team cookouts at JL's, etc.

I don't think Austin is being "flighty." He did have school as a top priority. He had to finish his work at his old school.

What's wrong in giving him time in taking a break to visit family before heading off to live in a place he isn't familiar with? I think we would have even more issues if he came to BU immediately after finishing coursework at his old school and became terribly homesick.

I think it's easy for us fans to think basketball should be the highest priority for him. But he did the best he could to finish school as soon as possible and get himself ready.

First...great report, dru, nice to know that great "Volunteer Reporters" are out pounding the pavement and getting the stories for BradleyFans.

Second....I have heard that not only is Merf a legit 5' 8", he has a massive wingspan of 5' 6" and a 13.5" vertical!!! :-o

Third...I was unable to join you downstairs dogs, but....
(you didn't think I would ignore the whole event), but I was doing some consulting work up on 6 Pavilion and saw the action out the window, down at the cafeteria, so I went to the 6th floor elevator lobby and pretty much watched the entire thing from the time the news stations were interviewing everyone, until JL left.
Actually many people were crowded into each of the east-facing elevator lobbies, and window and were watching.
As I told Rick Gaa, this was probably a MUCH MORE impact-ful event than either the BU people or Methodist people know.
Lots of the employees were interested, talking Bradley basketball, and taking quick trips to the windows to watch.
I suggest BU make a yearly event (or events) of Jim Les challenging Bryant, and maybe even some of the media guys like Pegler, Mattson, and Hall.
Maybe even issue an open challenge to the Mayor and Ray LaHood and have a shootout right on the Civic Center floor (of Fieldhouse) with the news stations filming and give away free T-shirts, hats, or tickets as well.
The pubicity will be worth it and I am sure some of those marginal and borderline BradleyFans will get more interested.
I saw it happening without a doubt today as a few of the observers from the windows knew me to be a good BU fan and started asking me about the current players and what to expect this year.
(of course I did my best salesman job.... )
