Report: Todd Lickliter Out As Iowa Coach

I heard 3 Iowa starters(Payne & Gatens?), went to the AD and said they were leaving if Lickliter isn't canned. Look for Iowa to sniff around Gregg Marshall, Brad Brownell from Wright State, maybe even Gregory at Dayton.

I read that Payne said he came there to play for Lickliter and that he was behind him 100%. Regardless, Todd is out of a job.

hard to refute what might be said but this makes so little sense that it has to be untrue...

what's the single thing or two a kid wants most...to play at a high level and to play a lot of minutes...right??
Payne (a freshman) and Gatens (a soph) chose Iowa and are not only playing in the Big Ten but are playing a TON!!
Gatens averages 37 minutes per game...one of the highest minutes played per game in the nation...

so if they are getting exactly what they bargained for under Lick, then it would be insane to ask to bring in a new coach...knowing full well, that any new coach may want to go get his own players and would recruit over them..
After all - isn't that precisely what Lickliter did...ran off a bunch of talented kids and brought those mid-major-caliber guys in......

anyone else think that ISU's Tim Jankovich has played himself out of any serious contention for a job like this one or any other BCS level head coaching spot...?
...given he had a strong, senior-ladened squad, and a cushy schedule and still couldn't beat his way out of a paper bag...and they end up with a low seed in the NIT...

Let's see how ISU does in the NIT. If they get lucky and hot and win a few he might be back in the running for a better job. (And what job isn't better than being at ISU? ;) ) JK (NOT)

He has finished in the top 3 of the MVC every year he's been there, and ahead of us...but I guess that's not saying much.

I hate to hear these kinds of things. I hope the AD didn't make a decision based on what the players wanted. That is a bad precedent to set, if he did.
And the players may get more than they wished for, since most new coaches are more than happy to see the old players leave and vacate the scholarships so the new coach can recruit more of his own players.

Interesting that Iowa cans Lickliter the day after ex-coach Steve Alford and New Mexico are named to the NCAA tournament as a 3 seed. Being from Iowa, I know how bad the blood between Alford and Iowa was and I'm sure it stung to see him doing so well while Lickliter, his replacement, just flat out stunk.

I have to disagree here...as said, he has finished in the Top 3 every year so far and went to a major postseason tournament as well...

More than that, he IS getting good recruits to come to Normal...Imagine what he could do if given the resources at a BCS...

I'd obviously expect Jacobsen to be ahead of him in the running for that job, but it wouldn't surprise me if they sniffed around in his direction....Parnam would be a great complimentary piece as an assistant in that area for players...

Plus, imagine the double benefits...no more Jank at ISU and less players fall to UNI as a result...

I call that a win win for BU.

but there seems to be a direct relationship between the number of Porter Moser leftover players he uses and the number of wins they get...
Kinda the same thing that happened down in Carbondale...they loved him when he had the holdover players but want him gone now...
I guess we'll see how it works out at ISU....there's already a bit of grumbling considering how many wins they have gotten...

I agree with Parrish, that roster looks a lot like a Horizon team.

It sure does. Gatens, Fuller, and possibly May would get PT on every Big 10 team but the rest of the team would have been better suited playing at a mid-major (or lower in the case of a few players).

Most Iowa fans on all the message boards are calling for Iowa to hire an experienced and proven recruiter...that seems to be the number one characteristic they are looking for in a new coach. Hopefully the AD feels the same way.

Comparing apples to oranges IMO..

Besides, I haven't seen a Carmichael or Lewis walking through our door...

Heck even Hill is a pretty solid talent...without him, they don't beat INSU Fri in STL...he flat out took over

This could be really good for Bradley on the recruiting front :-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D

Do you have someone in mind that we are recruiting against IOWA for? Or are you thinking his replacement will be someone we recruit against. As of right now I really can't see how this will affect our recruiting. I didn't want Payne out of HS and I still don't so I hope he isn't what you are talking about.

We have had Simms-Edwards, Eastman, Milos, and Prosser walk through our door. As well as some potentially good recruits on the way. Time will tell who fields the better teams over the next 4 years or so.

Not one of those players is as good or has as much upside as Jackie Carmichael.

I respectfully disagree. DSE shows as much upside, IMO (he's just at a different position). And Carmichael is a "man-child" for his age which I think potentially limits his upside. Regardless, even if Carmichael continues to improve into an all MVC player (which he probably will) Prosser was rated higher coming out of high school. Time will tell if that holds true; I know we both hope it does. :) And let's not even get started discussing the upside of Donivan Stewart.......

this article details who Iowa should be going after as their next coach...

first, they say don't feel sorry for Todd Lickliter...he's already been paid $2.6 million + for his time at Iowa and will get an additional $2.4 million over the next 3 years.
Not a bad payday considering his performance..

But here are the names listed...

"Barta's first call, and maybe his second, third and fourth calls, all need to be to the 865 area code
(that's Knoxville, Tenn., if you don't want to bother doing a Google search) - the home of one Mr. Bruce Pearl.
A former assistant coach at Iowa under Tom Davis, Pearl is everything Iowa
is looking for.
Iowa's got the money to at least peak Pearl's interest, too. The Big Ten Network is printing money on a daily basis

Besides Pearl, the list of candidates is long and less than sterling.
Keno Davis is thought to be on the short list
UTEP head coach Tony Barbee has been mentioned
along with the likes of Duke associate head coach Chris Collins, Dayton head coach Brian Gregory, Oregon State head coach Craig Robinson
and a slew of head men from the Missouri Valley Conference -
Ben Jacobson at UNI, Dana Altman at Creighton, Gregg Marshall at Wichita State and Tim Jankovich at Illinois State.

A couple names not on that list make my ears perk up: Scott Drew from Baylor and Josh Pastner from Memphis.
