Reynolds article

Lowery's contract being bought out by "corporate donors" -- NOT by the university...hmmm.....
I am assuming that without the corporate donors' actions the university simply couldn't and wouldn't be able to do a thing...
how dare those uppity corporate donors from thinking they are more powerful than they really are...
How dare them doing this without asking the message board posters what they should do!

There is no buyout clause in the deal, only what the university would have to pay the 38-year-old if he was fired, which would be the full remainder of the contract. As of today, that amounts to more than $2.25 million. If Lowery were to resign, he would actually have to pay the university $250,000.

I thought someone here told us all contracts have "buyout" clauses?

I wouldn't think they would. However, I would think you might want to have one.

The interesting thing on Lowery's deal was that he had to pay a "fine" or "fee" if he left early on his end.

I could see why a school would want some protection against leaving for a better school or another job like an analyst.I think that is a typical clause, although it is now hurting SIU's chances of letting Lowery go.

Not surprising. He is 3-4 years removed from NCAA success. He hasn't really built off of that, I can understand fans wanting him out and the school taking a long, hard look at the program.

hottest rumor is that they will bring back their assistant Rodney Watson who moved on to coach Southern Indiana -- many fans want Rodney back -- but he is likely to coach the same as Lowery and other fans kinda even hang some of the current blame on Watson since he's part of the reason they're where they are at..

If it's not Watson --and note CLo is still head coach so this is all speculation -- I think in their current financial mess they are DEFINITELY NOT going to be able to offer Chris-Lowery-type money to anyone even if they had a shot at Bobby Knight or Billy Gillispie.
So....that means starting over by hiring someone in the $200K range like a Creighton assistant or DePaul assistant.....
Some Saluki fans are hoping Jerrance Howard would be interested.........we'll see.....

I haven't read this whole thread but here is my outsiders perspective.

Dave Reynolds job is to write articles to inform the public on what they want to hear with facts (or what he thinks the public wants to hear). With this piece, he is showing the viewing public that he asked the questions that they want answers to.

His secondary job is the get readers to the PJ Star. Some may view it as slimy or unethical, but facts are facts- contraversy attracks readers. Looks at this thread alone. Over 2,500 views. Those views of this thread lead to hits on the PJ Star's website. Hits=ad $$ to the paper.

Dave is making his bosses happy...

Just my opinion...

Some brought him up on ESPN radio the other day for a different job. The consensus was that he was a great recruiter, for Illinois. However, he isn't close to being IL's top assistant.

Even bigger, if he goes somewhere smaller, the recruiting will get much harder.

Good thoughts, Nacho. I am in the same camp for the most part.

so, in your own words.... you concede that accuracy, honesty and fairness may take a 2nd place to .....
-giving people what they want to hear
-getting readers for the PJ Star
-creating controversy to attract readers
-making his bosses happy...

....stirring the pot as some say....

I would say that this is how it works. Think about how we got in this financial mess. Same mentality, different business. That's the world we live in unfortunately.

I would say that is true, although is anyone claiming the article is not accurate?

Great post but there are a few that would rather have wins then great young men that graduate.

Ohhhh, really?! Are you telling me you would rather have drug addicts, rapists and/or wife beaters on our team as long as they can win?

Maybe that's not quite what you meant literally, but isn't that what college is all about, graduating students in no matter what field they choose? Remember, most mid-major basketball players play for the love of the game. Only a few are legitimate pro prospects. The players who have no desire for a degree should go and play for one of the elite programs or just go pro immediately out of high school. What good do these players do for us? Maybe they can get us to the tourmament once in a while as POB did, but you can't build a team around a player like that if they are only going to stay for a year or so? Besides, those type of players are a dime a dozen in mid-major basketball.

But back to the original point. I will not sell out my university in order to pursuade the athletic department to recruit athletes who have no desire to earn a degree. And I would rather the team go winless than to have a John Calipari or Kelvin Sampson type come in here and recruit thugs who may be talented but can damage the reputation of a university faster than a bad record on the court can!

Thanks to the current CBA, the top players have to bite time either in college (one or two years) or play overseas (ala Brandon Jennings) in order to declare for the NBA draft. I know that it was instituted so the league would not water down, but it's up to the person themselves (or a trainer) if they need to develop a little more before declaring or just jump right in.

At Bradley, it's a lot like a family. I don't expect to watch players become lottery picks in the NBA. All I really expect from them is to play to their potential, and if all the chips fall in the right place they can celebrate a win.

And maybe, just maybe, win the play-in game against Drake. ;)

Yes, definitely agreed on all points, especially the last one! :D

Go Braves! :D

this comment makes me pitcure that TV commercial with Abe Lincoln being asked by his wife if her butt looks big...
Poor old Honest Abe is forced to tell the truth....
It's funny but it shows that just sometimes you DON't have to constantly hammer what you think is the truth....
