Scholly offer to Donivine Stewart .....

Jeremy's shooting struggles early in the 2005-2006 season, along with the emergence of Will Franklin kept JC mostly on the bench his sophomore season. But rather than sulk, he worked hard and came back his junior season.

The PJ Star now reports the BU scholarship offer to Donivine Stewart-
http://www.bradleyhoops.com/homepage/x1669485797/Limestone-guard-gets-offer-from-Bradley

Donivine Stewart says he has offers from Bradley, Illinois, and West Virginia.

However, the article is mistaken about the NLI signing period and rules.
The article says-
"When asked if he wanted to sign with a school this spring, Stewart was noncommittal."

But Stewart is only a junior, and he will not be eligible to sign this spring. The earliest he could sign a NLI would be next November.

There are rules, but the coaches are aware of them and closely follow them. The recruits can attend games as often as they want, and during contact periods like now, they may talk to coaches all they want.

WOW, thats pretty bad, even casual fans generally understand the NLI process - A sportswriter should really know that, even if they remained unnamed... Great quality writing...

I don't know who was meant-
But back in those early 1980's there weren't recruiting experts who graded recruits like there are today. So it was much more subjective to evaluate recruits then.
However, some of Versace's recruits were thought to be extremely high profile- Mitchell Anderson, Pierre Cooper, and Voise Winters to name a few who were recruited by some very high level programs like Big Ten schools, Marquette, and others.

You are correct about the lack of recruiting experts Da Coach, and those three names were the top three that came to my mind. I know Anthony Webster and Eddie(?) Harris were also considered top level by many. Maybe Barney "Gold" Mines as well.

I'll tell you what. When I think back to some of the guys Versace brought in I am really in awe. Those guys were just SO good. I really think the only reason Versace WAS able to get these guys was because there were no ratings services; I doubt if he could replicate that recruiting success under today's BCS-biased system.

I'd love to have Donivine Stewart. I think expectations of him may be unusually and unfairly high if he did choose to come to BU, but he would be the best pure PG we've had here in a long, long time.

Donivine has a very high basketball IQ and skills to back it up....biggest problem for Donivine in high school is that he might be the only really good player on his team and is forced to try and do-it-all himself to score! Put him around some other talent and he will flourish IMO....he would fit well with the Braves! :D

Agreed...he has a mental understanding of the game that cannot be taught. He's had that since his freshman year when he was dominating juniors and seniors in every facet of the game. Whatever he lacks in size and athleticism he more than makes up for with basketball intelligence.

I think Illinois has their point guard in the class of 2011 in Tracy Abrams. It is unlikely they would take 2 in 1 class.

I'll take size and athleticism anytime. You can help improve basketball intelligence with experience and coaching, but can not teach size or athleticism.

I guess you haven't seen Donivine Stewart play before. You can't teach the kind of natural basketball instincts he has.

Saw a little of DS as a sophmore, but him trying to be the whole team perhaps distorted my view of his abilities.

DC = Size w/o athleticism...shortest (playing) tall center in BU history, edging out Rabey and Heemskirk

ZA = Size with athleticsm, impact player

DS sounds like another SM...nothing wrong with that, but would hope to get better shooting and/or defense from that position

JMHO

However, like the old saying, 1 billion Chinese can't all be wrong, if I am the lone voice of doubt on DS, I yield to popular Forum opinion....

Great response! :)
