Secret scrimmages

I'm not sure why teams are still playing secret scrimmages, since the NCAA now allows D1 teams to play other D1 teams in preseason exhibitions and sell tickets.
But there apparently are still some teams doing the secret scrimmages. In the first secret scrimmage of the 2025-26 season-
Oklahoma 89 Texas Tech 87

Maybe the logic is so coaches can try different offensive and defensive schemes without anyone else in their
conference being able to see and scout them?
btw- many pick Texas Tech in the Top 10 - these guys pick them #6, CBSSports has them #7, AP at #8.

INSU had a secret scrimmage against Miami OH (2nd in MAC preseason) last weekend. Won 4 out 5 twelve minute periods. Walk on's and Freshman lost the last period.

Interesting. I am surprised Indiana State did so well. They have been picked in the lower half of the MVC in just about every preseason preview, and the Blue Ribbon Yearbook picked them dead last (11th).
On the other hand, Miami was a pretty good team last year (25-9, 14-4 and 2nd in the MAC). They made it to the title game in the MAC Tournament, losing a close game, 76-74, to #1 seed Akron. They have had a lot of turnover, but they still appear to have some decent talent, and they added a couple guys with Bradley connections, Almar Atlason. Leshawn Stowers, and Brant Byers, a redshirt soph that Bradley offered..

I put zero stock in these "secret scrimmage" results. I think in most cases the coaches primary objective is evaluation and lineup experimentation over the end result.

I don't think that it's surprising. I also don't think people have really looked into the roster. INSU is an older team who brought back like 6 or 7 guys so there's retention as well. They can score I mean they led the league in scoring overall last season even after losing what they lost 2 seasons ago. They are going to be good offensively again. What they needed last season was defense. So if their defense has any type of improvement they will be better than what projections have shown.

Omaha played a closed scrimmage today at Drake and won 72-68- no details or stats....
Looking like the MVC may not be as strong this year as we had hoped.

Illinois lost a secret scrimmage today to Florida- Florida 96 Illinois 86

there are definitely conflicting reports on the Illini secret scrimmage
This guy quotes someone from the Illinois staff who says Illinois WON the scrimmage 87-66
He even posts a full box score and notes that theORIGINAL reports claiming Florida won have a date/time stamp from BEFORE
the scrimmage was played-
so I guess people can choose to believe what they want, but it's pretty hard to fabricate an entire box score.

Just go to the Illini message board (IllinoisLoyalty) and see their thread regarding win over Florida.
Yes, I don't know where it came from, but the box score posted by yoda, that shows Illinois beating Florida, is FAKE.
Illinois lost the closed scrimmage to Florida by the score I posted 3 posts above,
Final score was Florida 96 Illinois 86

The Illinois Loyalty board is melting down over a preseason exhibition loss to the preseason #3 ranked team.
Well, at least they clobbered Illinois State.
