Very pleased to see Indiana State beat Minnesota to keep advancing in the NIT. I only wish ISU Blue had not been unfairly denied an NCAA berth. I would rather they had gotten the bid instead of Drake. Given that we have become a one bid league in the eyes of the selection committee, I would like to see the MVC eliminate the post season tournament, with the automatic bid going to the winner of the regular season. That way the team who earns the bid all season gets it, and not the team who happens to string together 3 good games in the tournament.

Definitely an interesting thought, but probably not financially a good idea.
 
That wouldn't happen since it would make the Arch Madness somewhat meaningless. A better idea, imo, would be to expand the NCAA Tournament to 96 or 100 teams, and allow both the regular season champion and the tournament champion into the NCAAT. Then give byes to the top 32 seeded teams in the first round.
I don't see the NCAA doing this since it would put more midmajors in, which they are opposed to, and the Power Conference teams would dislike it because there would be more mid-major teams upsetting their 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th place teams.
 
Indiana St. is better then at least 10 to 12 teams in the NCAA Tour.The Virginia selection has to be by far the worst one in a long time.
 
I know that the tournament is the holy grail. But there is something to be said to be able to host 3 games, two in front of P5 schools, filling your arena on all 3 occasions in the NIT.

Anyone have a general idea out there of what the revenue difference for the school would be?

Assuming a first round bounce such as Drake, vs 6500 in the stands vs SMU and sell outs vs Minnesota and presumably Cincy.

Then it gets kind of interesting, getting to Hinkle, and lets say winning it all, with certainly thousands of their fans in attendance.

Is winning the NIT with this path better for the institution/growing the fan base as opposed to even, let's say a Round of 32 exit?
 
I don't know the exact numbers, but since the NCAA took over the NIT, the attendance for NIT games does not make a difference to the revenue paid to the teams playing. The NCAA gets all ticket and TV revenue and pays a fixed amount to the participating teams for each game played. So even if a team hosts games in the first 3 rounds in the NIT or is a road team, the amount they earn is the same. And it does not come close to the revenue paid to each team in the NCAA Tournament, which is around $2 million for each game played (paid to the conference and divided among the teams).
 
So let's say 165k vs hosting 25,000 fans over 3 games. They don't get concession and merch revenue? $10 bucks a person is a quarter mil + whatever the fixed revenue is. Plus the local economy fairs far better, I'd have to imagine.

​​​​​​Maybe it's far better for the city of Terre Haute, but maybe not for the University, but the more I think about it, I think the Trees struck gold with this exact arrangement.

I think 98% of the time the NIT is a losing proposition vs a first round bounce, even if you are a 1 seed. But I think in this situation, the Trees may actually be better off with this result, both financially and for building the fan base. More home games and more quality opponents. They must be racking up the money for extending their season, etc.

Furthermore, I see any team making it that far as one of the Top 50 teams in the nation - no questions asked
 
Drake’s last 2 games in the NCAA tourney have not been a good look for the Valley in having the committee consider the MVC for getting 2 bids.

Devries basically choked in both games.

yes, I think your take on this is realistic. Most of the final four NIT teams are very strong mid-majors or middle of the pack power 6 teams. They are typically pretty darn good teams that for whatever reason had a few more losses than allowable for the NCAA tournament. Could have been roster injuries, or other issues that came into play that season. But without a doubt, those final four NIT teams are definitely better than almost all of the 15-20 low major auto bid teams that make the NCAA tournament.
 
Indiana State looking great against Utah, leading 86-73 with four minutes to go. I hope they hang on. And I really wish the crowd would do an "MVC" chant like I know Braves fans would . . . and have. I remember when BU won the NIT in 1982 and Coach Versace said post-game that the MVC champ should ALWAYS be in the NCAA tournament. I would hope Coach Schertz would say something similar if they win the title.....even if he's about to bolt.
 
Well at least by getting this far, it doesn’t hurt future consideration of MVC in next season’s NCAA tourney, tho Drake’s poor results the last 2 seasons hurt a bit. Unfortunately both teams results likely doesn’t help.

I can’t think of a bigger shaft in recent history than UVA making it over Indy St. This was all about the Big Boys getting more exposure.
