Some recruiting news 3-6....

Disclaimer-- I have no inside knowledge of what Matt Roth is thinking or what he will do.

That being said, I would like to offer my opinion anyway.
I would be shocked if he decided to go to a school who has just fired their coach and is hiring a new one. The most important factors in a kid choosing a school is their comfort level with the coach, how the kids game fits with the style of play of that coach, and how long the coach is likely to remain at that school.
When a kid like Roth has other options, it usually means he won't select a school like ILSU or INSU because it would be nearly impossible for whatever new coach takes over to make up ground and reassure the kid he is really wanted there.
SIU does not have any scholarships available for 2008, and just got committments from several 2-guards in the classes of 2007 and 2008. So I would be surprised if SIU is as attractive to him as Bradley. Beside that, There seems a greater liklihood Chris Lowery won't be there compared to any chances of Jim Les leaving.
And his game fits with Bradley's style far better than any of the other programs he is considering.
So, unless another school enters the picture, my guess is that Bradley has the best chance at signing MR.
Let's hope so.

DC..............that's what I was thinking.....The Braves seem to be in the drivers seat right now and MR might want to get in while a ride is atill there!

F86............pjs says 1 Washington vs 10 Rock Island @ 6 pm and game 2 Richwoods vs 9Pekin @ 8 pm:wink:

Hear he wants to be close to home...but that is not from a terribly good source.....makes sense though......
Saw the game tonight at the field house.....MR has incredible range......he nevers looks for the line like most kids do......he just fires it up.......saw some nice on the move shots as well.......

Come to BU Matt!

Washington beat Rock Island 74-54

Richwoods beat Pekin 46-41

Richwood plays Washington in the regional final Friday at the Fieldhouse.

Farmington and Putnam County won their super-sectionals and will play in the Class A Elite 8 at Carver this weekend.

yeah i was at the games, and Roth really shot well in the second half, and had a bomb that may have been from the distance of Franklin's heave against Kansas in the NCAA last year

Matt Roth had a long range shot that had to have been at least 27-28 feet.

He fired another one from the same spot a little later and missed. He glanced at a teammate after the shot and looked as if he was shrugging it off in a manner like 'yea... no big deal, I coulda made that'.

Les was there.

An Asst for SIU was there.

And Bruce Weber was there.

Was Bruce practicing for his next job as the Carver timeout court sweeper??

Oh, and by the way... it was the 2nd time I have seen Cole play this year (and I doubt I am a good measure of talent)... but I wasn't overly impressed.

Cole was much larger than anyone on the floor. Yea - he blocked some shots, scored some at times... but I guess I get the impression that an Illini recruit with his size would just DOMINATE in a game like that.

Pekin really had a nice game plan. They scored a lot off of back cuts. They tried to keep Cole out of the paint defensively. They boxed out on him on his offensive end really hard most of the 1st half.

I guess Cole just needs to beef up a little for B10 play and get some of that Illini-conditioning under his belt and he will be fine.

And he almost made the second bomb.....hitting the front of the rim and the back of the rim before rolling off.

MR is about more than just hitting long range bombs. He took two charging fouls on successive RI possessions in the third quarter, that helped Washington pull away.

I spoke to two Washington fans who said they would have to get BU season tickets if MR ends up with the Braves! :)

I'm sure Illinois State's chances to get Roth took a hit with the Moser firing, but if he doesn't go to Illinois State, I really hope he stays in the Valley.

St. Bruce of Chambana is only looking at Roth as a fallback option in case he loses a guy like Iman Shumpert. I honestly don't think Brucey is really wanting Roth. I think he's showing interest out of convenience rather than genuine interest. Just my opinion.

St. Bruce thinks Roth is below the Big 10 in my opinion.

I think BW was there more to see Cole play than Roth, but I agree that his interest in MR is more of the fallback variety than a genuine "I want you to come play at U of I".

JL has already offered MR a scholarship.....BU's interest in MR is definitely genuine! :)

I agree. As was Moser's. I am interested to see if the new coach can make up the lost ground on Roth whenever he is hired. At least Roth will know that whoever ISU hires will be there for the duration of his stay, should he decide to be a Redbird.

Not only is it genuine, but I really believe Roth can play a BIG role next year and even compete for a starting role given BU's system of playing up to 4 guards at a time.

Starting in '08? I think that's a bit over the top. We will have a very experience set of guards with Maniscalco, Fears, Williams, Warren, Brown, and Buycks all with some amount of DI experience.

This year we lose Franklin, Adams, and Tauai, then next year we lose Crouch and Ruffin.
When Roth gets here (you like my confidence?) the guards we'll have will be Maniscalco and freshman West - both point guards, and Fears, DeAaron, Warren, and Buycks.

If we remain a 3-point shooting team, who among that group will be our outside threat?
Maybe only Warren and Sam, so there will be competition for those guard spots.
I'm not saying I expect any freshman to start, but OE competed and won a starting spot when he showed he can shoot and score, so Matt will have that chance.
Don't count him out, yet, the kid's got talent.
