Speaking of...

Matt Salley......

Is there something new to report with Matt?

I had a chance to talk to him last weekend at the Braves Club tailgating party. He was as relaxed and talkative as I have seen him. He looked like he was in great shape, and was ready to get the season started.

Thats what I was wondering....if there was any news? Early discussions about MS in some trouble. Hopefully those rumors were wrong.

I would imagine we would have heard something offcial by now.

Looking forward to seeing MS in his Senior year. He's a vital piece to the Braves.

My hope has always been that our jucos are so good and Sam S so improved that MS never sees the floor this year. I'm hoping the order of playing time goes something liike this:

GUARDS (3 of these 5 on the court always):
Ruff--------32
JC---------32
TCS--------20
Warren-----20
Sam M------16

SMALL FORWARD
Wilson-------20
Egolf---------20

PF/CENTER
Collins--------17
Austin--------17
Singh---------6

This is a 10-man rotation. I think most teams rotate no more than 7-9. Salley would be #11 in my rotation- although I've never seen Austin or Collins play before, so who knows. Nothing against Matt, I just hope we're THAT GOOD that he's #11. Maybe my expectations are unrealistic. I'm sure JL & Co. will figure it out.

Dont' take offense, but................... I think your expectations are WAY unrealistic!

What's wrong with Matt Salley?! Heck, the guy was a starter last year and a solid Valley player. I expect him to start and put up 9-10 ppg and 6-7 rpg............not bad numbers in my opinion.

Remember, last year was his first year at D-1; I expect this could even be a breakout year for him. I'll be surprised if he isn't a starter. All of the new guys will have to adjust just like Salley did last year.

I think Matt is a good, steady player. He can hit the 12' shot coming off the pick & roll and he gets rebounds. I can't see him getting less playing time than a freshmen big. I think he will be a productive role player for the Braves this year.

I talked to Matt Friday night and he is extremely excited to play this season. I think He might start off as a starter but The combination on Austin/Collins or the 4-guard lineup might be in effect and Matt might not start every game. However there is no reason to believe that he won't get 20-25 mins a game

Do you think Salley is better then Austin? I think Salley will play ahead of Singh but I was hoping that Austin was better then him. I really dont see Salley averaging 10 points a game, POB only averaged 13 and Zach 11.

I thought Matt was pretty good last year. He had a rough start at the beginning because he was getting used to D-I basketball and the Bradley team playing style. I think he had a hard time getting into the flow of things off the bench.

However, once he started some games, he began to play better.

Among those returning from last season Matt is 8th in the Valley in rebounding.
And surprisingly Matt is also among the top 25 returning scorers, since so many of the top players in the Valley are not returning.
The job is Matt's to keep if he works hard and performs well.
As for issues this summer people have been alluding to-- they were all handled "by the book" and
are closed issues at his time, and should not be rehashed.

I do not think Salley is better than Austin (based on the press clippings I have read). However, I also think that Salley is better than you give him credit for (again, based upon HS and JC press clippings I have read).

I would not be surprised to see Austin starting by mid-season. I also would not be surprised to see Salley put up the numbers that I mentioned (he nearly did this last year). And I would also put Salley on par or better than Zach Andrews as far as basketball talent goes (athletic ability is a different story).

Matt Salley as a junior college sophomore:
13.2ppg, 8.8 rpg, 1.9 apg, 1.5 spg, 1.3 bpg, led his junior college team to 33-5, finished in the NJCAA Elite Eight (7th place), and was 1st Team All region. He was also listed as high as top-100 by some services when he was still in high school in North Carolina.

Rashad Austin as a junior college sophomore:
13.1ppg, 7.9 rpg, 1.4 apg, 1.0 spg, 1.9 bpg, led his junior college team to 35-2, finished in the NJCAA Elite Eight (7th place), and was 1st Team All Region. He was also listed as high as top-100 by some services when he was still in high school in California.

...pretty eerily similar I'd say........I'd hesitate to call either one superior based on stats.but Matt is a senior and Rashad is a junior.

I guess what I really hope is that Austin can score or draw a double team in the post. That was an aspect of the game we sorely missed last year. Either way I like our depth at the 4 with Salley, Austin and a health Singh.

I do too, as long as they don't get any speeding, seat belt, or red light tickets. Otherwise, we need to lock them up and throw away the key!

I'd rather BU cover incidents up, "buy off" the local news, and have posts deleted at this board whenever someone "in the know" mentions it.

LOL! ;)

man, i thought i was the only one nerdy enough to start guessing playing time! i have a few thoughts about it....

i think we will start 2 bigs this year because WE CAN! we have several guys who are expected to contribute down low. here's my minutes distribution....

Ruffin--------33
Crouch-------30
Cole-Scott----8
Wilson--------14
Warren-------25
Maniscalco----15

Salley--------22
Collins--------14
Austin--------14
Singh---------15

salley will get his minutes.
one of the other bigs will start with MS and possibly get a few more than the other two bigs.
maniscalco will be a better option as backup point than cole-scott.

GO AHEAD AND CRITIQUE IT.....
