Steve Alford to New Mexico - Done Deal

What I have heard this afternoon is that the events today are just a formality. Alford needed to get Iowa's permission to "talk" about this job with New Mexico. But I've heard he has already been talking to them under the table since last week and has agreed to take the job if New Mexico covers any buyout costs.

Watch for this to all unfold in the next few days. Most Iowa people are happy to get rid of Alford, and the people at New Mexico are a bit delusional in thinking he is an improvement over Richie McKay.

One way or another......this will effect the Valley.....Dana Altman & Chris Lowery have both been mentioned! :-o

Here is something else to wonder about---

2 of the 3 Iowa recruits for 2007 were strongly recruited by Bradley and Jim Les before committing to Iowa. Might they ask for their release from Iowa after Alford leaves, as seems to be the routine with recruits? Would Bradley have any interest, or any room?

Jake Kelly-
Jake Kelly is a 6'6" big guard from Carmel High School near Indianapolis. He transferred to Carmel for his senior season, and was at small school, Marshall, Illinois prior to that. Bradley recruited him before he moved to Carmel.

Dairese Gary--
Dairese Gary is a 6'1" point guard from Elkhart, Indiana. As can be seen from this link to a Bradleyfans topic from 2005, Bradley has been recruiting him for a long time before he committed to Iowa

Iowa's 3rd recruit is Jarryd Cole, who Bradley doesn't appear to have been involved with--

And the strong talk at Iowa and elsewhere is that it's all but signed and made public, and it's already being reported on TV and radio in Iowa....
that Steve Alford is going to take the New Mexico job.
More pay, less hassle.

Man does New Mexico know how to pick 'em or what? Dave Bliss, Fran Fraschilla, Richie McKay, and now the great Steve Alford? And they wonder why they can't get out of the cr@pper?

HAHAHAHAHA, Altman has three of four dream jobs. Over time, I have never learned who they are but many schools, I have learned without doubt, are not on the list. Surprisingly, Iowa is NOT on the list. I once feared this job opening but no more.

Perhaps you should worry about your own coach since he makes itty-bitty money in Peoria, USA. 8)

BU fans, correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this JL's dream job? :?: :-o

I think most posters want to keep the coach's in tact to keep the Valley at the top ......but he might be right since JL has as many post-season W's in 5 seasons as DA in 12.............3! :-o

ESPN is reporting that Steve Alford is now finalizing a contract to become the new coach at New Mexico....

DANA is not taking a job at IOWA in my humble opinion. Why would he!! He has Creighton playing great ball and has turned down much better offers.

dont worry LJ, i didnt see anything wrong with your comment.

I noticed people have seemed a lil more fiesty around here this last week, the passions seem highly aroused.

But this is in contrast with what I have heard and read.
Altman loves recruiting Iowa, and loads up every year on his Kyle Korver/Nat Funk/Pierce Hibma/Casey Harriman type players.
I have heard it said that if any job could draw DA away from Creighton, it would be Iowa.

I ran across this blurb in the Utah press about the candidates for the spot there:

"Dana Altman: An apparent candidate three years ago, he has had a solid career at Creighton, but a lack of NCAA tournament success (two wins in seven trips) and a bland personality make him unlikely to be considered."

Like Utah is sooooo above Creighton?
Let's see, how many postseason wins did they have this year...

I have seen one of the Iowa recruits, Beas Hamga, the 7-ft stud from Decatur Christian, who is really already about 20 years old,
and the kid is a Greg Oden-like dominating force.
Does JL know the area code for Decatur??

Good point, Tornado..as if Utah was a too-good-to-pass-up dream destination. lol Creighton compares pretty favorably to Iowa too, imo
