So another way of looking at it would be:

BCS - 12
Midmajors - 4

Despite the best efforts of the selection commitee, midmajors are still taking 1/4 of the BCS conferences' precious Sweet 16 money.

As much as I agree with this, I just want to mention how I doubt the selection committee feels the Mountain West and CUSA are mid-major (though not viewed as major either, just in-betweener's and therefore acceptable).

Mountain West maybe... but CUSA has been gutted by the Big East right? Only "big" program still in there is Memphis... CUSA hasn't even been close to CAA or MVC or maybe even the A10 for at least a couple of years.

Does anyone have the "total no. of conference teams / no. of sweet 16 teams" over the 2006 and 2007 tournaments?

For example, for the MVC it would be "6/3" - or 50% of the teams invited over the last two years have made the sweet 16.

I'm a glutton for punishment looking this up:

This year:
Pac-10: 3 teams (6 bids - 50%) (Oregon, UCLA, USC)
SEC: 3 teams (5 bids - 60%) (Florida, Vanderbilt, Tennessee)
Big East: 2 teams (6 bids - 33%) (Pittsburgh, Georgetown)
Big 12: 2 teams (4 bids - 50%) (Kansas, Texas A&M)
ACC: 1 team (7 bids - 14%) (North Carolina)
Big 10: 1 team (6 bids - 16%) (Ohio State)
MVC: 1 team (2 bids - 50%) (SIU)
Horizon: 1 team (2 bids - 50%) (Butler)
MWC: 1 team (2 bids - 50%) (UNLV)
C-USA: 1 team (1 bid - 100%) (Memphis)

Last year:
Big East: 4 teams (8 bids - 50%) (West Virginia, UConn, Villanova, Georgetown)
SEC: 2 teams (6 bids - 33%) (Florida, LSU)
ACC: 2 teams (4 bids - 50%) (Duke, Boston College)
Pac 10: 2 teams (4 bids - 50%) (UCLA, Washington)
MVC: 2 team (4 bids - 50%) (Wichita St, Bradley)
Big 12: 1 team (4 bids - 25%) (Texas)
C-USA: 1 team (2 bids - 50%) (Memphis)
WCC: 1 team (1 bid - 100%) (Gonzaga)
CAA: 1 team (2 bids - 50%) (George Mason)

Total:

Given the underwhelming performance of the B10 and the ACC ... the Selection Committee needs to stop pulling in the middle-of-the-road teams from those conferences. When you consider the seeds that many of the B10 and ACC teams started with, the picture probably gets even uglier.

An interesting study would be the mid-major conferences' winning percentages compared to the BCS conferences' winning percentages for a given seed. That could tell us if the seeting is "fair" or not.

The only mid majors still I alive that I see is So Ill and Butler. While I don't have specific numbers, I'm sure Memphis and UNLV's budgets are healthy(if those are the other two you are referring to). Of course the term 'mid major' is very subjective.

The one I was using is the every conference that isn't a BCS conference is "midmajor" definition.
