Teams invited to the CBI- Wichita State and Oregon State

Wichita State has been given a home game in the CBI, despite their .500 record of 16-16, and their RPI of 156.
By the way, one of their wins was against a non-Division 1 school, so for the purposes of the NCAA, they are 15-16, a losing record.--

And now, Oregon State also has been given a home game in the CBI, despite their pathetic record of 13-17, their 9th place finish in the Pac-10, and their RPI of 154! They were just 6-6 out-of-conference, and just 4-6 against D1 non-conference opponents.
Also, they tanked at the end of the season and lost their last 4 games in a row.
And 2 of their wins were against non-Division 1 teams, so their record, as seen by the NCAA, is actually 11-17!-

I am now very glad Bradley stayed away from this spectacle! The CBI has become a huge joke.
Will the CBI have any teams with a winning record? Or have they lost all respect and credibility by only inviting teams who can sell a few tickets, regardless of record?
Last year, all teams had winning records, except Cincinnati, and they at least had a winning out-of-conference record, and were the "next-in-line" team from one of the top conferences, the Big East.

Here is a blog with guesses who Wichita State might play-
http://blogs.kansas.com/shockwaves/2009/03/14/cbi-opponent-guesses/
Every team on that list has an RPI far better than Wichita State's 156.

The CBI must have lowered it's required guarantee from last year. It was reported that they demanded a hosting team guarantee $60,000 in ticket sales last year. This article says it's $50,000 this year--

see 4th paragraph from bottom.

And here is an interesting article by John Feinstein of the Washington Post that supports the case of more midmajors in the NCAA. Unfortunately, he doesn't see it happening.

Da, do you know something I don't know?

Yes, Bradley was contacted by the CBI again this year. But after evaluating a number of factors, they decided to participate in the CIT (CollegeInsider.com Tournament). The unreasonable demand for such a high guarantee by the CBI means they will get unworthy teams desperate to play in a postseason tournament. The CIT will have better teams.

I'd play in it

I'd play in it

I think your right that it won't be a very good tournament. However it still is a good idea from Wichita's point of view. They need the experience and they should be rewarded for playing better at the end of the season. If that was all that was available to us. I still would think it was a good idea to play in it.

There is still a lot of speculation about Creighton getting into the big dance. Bracketology if you will, thus allowing the NIT an opportunity to invite Bradley as the second MVC team. Is this a possibility or just fan talk, could we expect to be a long shot for the NIT???

Last year, as a new startup tournament, the CBI held some promise. And they had some pretty good teams last year, and the teams that advanced were good teams. Now this year, the first 2 teams that announce they are in the CBI are 2 teams with losing D1 records. That's already more losers than there were with all 16 teams last year. And it's no surprise the teams willing to fork out the big guarantee are big state schools who can always get the money from the taxpayers when they don't sell enough tickets. It would be nice if they at least required the hosting schools to have winning records, so they don't have so many lousy teams advance in the tournament. If they are this desperate to get teams to host that they will guarantee home games to losers, I wouldn't be surprised if they don't get 16 teams (8 host teams) when all is said and done. Maybe they will have some D2 teams or cut the size of the field down when they don't get enough teams.

Of course Bradley would rather play in the NIT. But this is a very long shot. Creighton and ISU will be in the NIT.

The CBI is not a joke. It is what it is. It is a second tier postseason tournament built on the foundation of making money. The joke is the teams that agree to play in it. We all know that Wichita draws well, that is why they got the invite. Maybe I am contradicting myself, but I enjoyed the tournament a ton last year. Now do I think that the CIT is any better? No! I just wanna watch BU play a couple more games. I would not be ripping the CBI if we were playing in that, nor will I rip the CIT. Like I said before, it is what it is. We didn't get the job done when we should have and now we have to play in one of these 2 tournaments. To say that one tournament is a joke and the other is okay because we are playing in it is unjustified. Maybe I am taking some of the posts wrong, but it seems that the consenus is pro-cit and anit-cbi. Just my opinion. GO BU!

When you are taking 13 win teams in your 'postseason' tournament, you're a joke. This not only makes destroys their credibility as a viable postseason option this year, but I think also unfortunately strengthens people's argument from last year wasn't a 'real' postseason. I don't look as either tournament (CIT or CBI) as much more than a head start on next season, however I am somewhat comforted to know that the CIT requires teams to be at least .500 to get in. It makes me mad that the CBI didn't try to legitimize itself this year. It's not going to be around long (and shouldn't be) and certainly won't be able to find any sponsors if it continues to loser itself to near last place teams.

suddenly I like this guy Feinstein!!

I'm pretty sure he's always been a strong supporter of smaller programs. He wrote a book I haven't read yet (I've read a couple of his others) called The Last Amateurs about a season in the Patriot League... So he's spent a year close to "low major" basketball.

I'm kinda with you....its how you VIEW this tourney that makes a difference. If its a "reward" for your regular season play they are falling short. If you look at is as simply a chance to keep playing...go for it and have some fun.

I DO agree with bradleyBrave though that they are blowing the chance to legitimize the tourney to some degree by taking sub .500 teams allthough I don't think the CBI OR the CIT will ever garner much respect as a far as teams "earning" any right to play.

Think of it as a chance to get an early start on next season and go from there.

Actually the BIGGEST factor or plus in these tourney's is hoping BU gets a game against some warm weather team then Me and OB74 can take a roadie like last year with Tulsa and get some early golf in......Is Arizona or Florida going to be playing. :)

A couple days ago, I would have agreed. It seems they've dropped off a lot of projections in the last 24 hours. I hope not, because the Valley is much better than a one-bid league!

It looks like Creighton is very slightly IN right now.

Miss St could steal a bid today, but I don't think Creighton would be the one to suffer from it.

I say Creighton is IN.

Good point Patrick. Why is the tourney a joke? If the group putting it on gets teams to play in it, and they pay the money, then its legit.

What is a joke is teams trying to convince fans that playing in the CBI or CIT is a "reward" for a good season. It isn't. Like you I love watching more Bradley games but the CIT event isn't anymore "legit" than the CBI.

After the NCAA and NIT the rest all fall in the same category. They are extra games for teams willing to either A) pay for the home game or B) get the money to go on the road to extend their seasons. Nothing more, nothing less.

I disagree. If one of those tournaments requires teams to have winning records (the CIT has implied that it does), it is clearly different than the other that doesn't care how few wins you have, or the quality of the wins, as long as you shell our $50,000 to host a game. One seeks out and "rewards" only above average quality teams, the other doesn't.
I'll wait until all the teams are known before I critique the CIT, but the CBI, already with teams like Oregon State, with only 11 wins against D1 competetion, getting rewarded with a home game is a joke, IMO.

But if you aren't willing to shell out 25-30K you can't host a game in the CIT either. So because the guarantee is higher it makes it less legit?

It isn't like the CIT is letting people in for free, expenses paid like the NCAA and NIT.
