Ron Jirsa from Marshall was fired today after the Thundering Herd went 13-19 this season. He had an overall record of 43-74 at Marshall.

Jirsa's firing might have an influence on the verbal and signing of Yuba's Demetrius Young...I would love for COACH CORN to give us some insight on this, and whether Bradley can get back in on Young.

In the strongest language yet, the Minnesota AD Joel Maturi said:
"I am working hard to find the person who can help restore pride and energy into the program. Jim Molinari did a remarkable job these past three months, and I am thankful,"

And.......A press conference has been called for this afternoon at Michigan.
The topic is a closely guarded secret, but many are speculating that Michigan will fire head coach Tommy Amaker.

Wow, that's the 4th Mountian West coach fired (Colorado State, New Mexico, Utah, Wyoming) of their 9 members.
And this was predicted last fall that it was going to be one of their finest years ever.

Yea... but sadly, the MVC had a very successful season as a conference and we lose 4 coaches as well (edit: ooops, 3, but maybe 4 if Dr Tom retires).

Michael Cooper is a former New Mexico player who played in 1976-78 and then had a good NBA career with the Lakers. He has had some success in coaching first as an assistant for the Lakers, then as a coach for the LA Sparks of the WNBA. He then was an assistant coach under Jeff Bzdelik with the NBA's Denver Nuggets for 24 games in 2004 and took over as head coach for a month when Bzdelik was fired until George Karl was hired. Now he is a coach for the Albuquerque Thunderbirds of the NBDL.

There seems to be a great deal of support to bring Cooper in as head coach at New Mexico, but there is a problem. He never graduated from college and is still short of his degree. And after nearly 30 years, he has still failed to complete his college coursework, despite the urging of many New Mexico supporters. He therefore is not qualified to be a candidate for the job.

Hey, isn't there a junior college in Kansas (Barton County) that offers up to 24 credit hours in a six week span?
AND...they even provide you with the test answers just incase you don't already know them yourself.
The famous Ricky Clemons, one of Quin Snyder's infamous, lawbreaking recruits was able to get qualified without even attending class by getting 47 credits over one summer at Barton Co., and some of the officials there went to jail for the fraud. But who cares, Ricky still got qualified until he came to Mizzou and broke even more laws.

I think it would be note worthy to point out which are NIT and which are NCAA, because Les' is going to get 5 this year and thats hardly fair to creighton on SIU

For anyone who hasn't followed this interesting bit of rumor-- Andy Katz of ESPN is reporting that New Mexico is close to filling the vacancy left by the firing of Ritchie McKay. The top 2 candidates are Gregg Marshall (Winthrop coach), and Steve Alford, who is still the Iowa coach. But the Hawkeye nation wants to dump Alford and replace him with Dana Altman. Alford has supposedly indicated to New Mexico that he might be interested if they would help buy out his final year at Iowa and match his $1 million + salary.

This is a link to an ESPN Insiders article, so you can only see the first part--

Here are a couple of funny articles about how Steve Alford was ticked off at the NCAA/NIT for omitting Iowa completely--

Andy Katz also claims that Minnesota is prepared to offer Chris Lowery up to $1.5 million.
I guess that's the going rate at the BCS schools nowadays.

Here is some other miscellaneous coaching news:

UNLV coach Lon Kruger says he's not interested in leaving UNLV (but don't they all say that in order to get a better offer?)

Jeff Bzdelik (Illinois native) present coach at Air Force (and past head coach of the Denver Nuggets) is one of the top candidates for the head coaching vacancy at Colorado.

Missouri State and Barry Hinson assistant Ben Miller wants the head coaching job at UM-KC.

Just to be sure the uinversity won't spend beyond its mean when it hires a new head basketball coach, the University of Hawaii has placed a cap on how much they can pay, $400,000.
http://www.honoluluadvertiser.com/a...ID=/20070316/SPORTS0204/703160357/1032/SPORTS
(I think they'll still get a candidate or two who'd want to go to Hawaii for $400K)
