Timberwolves trade away a bundle for 5th pick Rubio, who now wants to stay in Spain

Rubio is only 19 I think, so it's not as terrible as it would seem on the surface. T-wolves probably treated this as a luxury pick, not a need pick.

Actually, he is just 18 years old, he'll turn 19 in October (BD 10/21/90). And all is not lost. The Timberwolves also drafted another pretty good point guard, Syracuse's Jonny Flynn, with the next draft pick (6th), which they also owned.

If Rubio stays and plays in Europe, because he is playing professionally, the Timberwolves will retain his rights indefinitely and he can never re-enter the NBA draft. Those rights can even be traded by the Timberwolves if they choose to do so. If Rubio did decide to play for Minnesota, they would have to buyout his current pro contract in Europe.

As a matter of fact the Timberwolves save around $8 million if Rubio plays out his Euro contract. The GM new this and I bet he is figured all this in the equation. I believe Rubio's value will only go up the next few years. I also believe he is a very talented young player that could be a starter in the NBA right now. How many 18-19 year olds can say that? I'm only pissed that the Wizards traded that pick!

As a matter of fact the Timberwolves save around $8 million ...

but then, according to your argument, wouldn't the 30 NBA teams save a combined $120-$150 million and MORE if every one of the first round draft picks up and goes to play in Europe.
The Bulls would have saved a bundle if they didn't sign Derrick Rose, and for that matter the Cavs would have really saved a TON had they declined to pay LeBron... ;)

I think the $8 million they are talking about is the buyout clause from the European club for Rubio.

It looks like the Timberwolves were thinking long term when they made this selection. Who knows if it will pan out.

I thought I heard somewhere that NBA teams can only pay up to a certain amount to European team (thought I heard $500K) to buyout a player... Which would mean Rubio would have to pay the rest of the money to the team. This is why he was considering playing in Turkey or somewhere else, where his new team could actually pay the entire buyout.

Can anyone verify that?

I never heard that about basketball but it is true about hockey that they can only buyout a certain amount.

I just don't like how these foreign players can hold a NBA team hostage. That one Chinese player a draft or two ago almost refused to play for the Timberwolves too, right? Or was it the Bucks?

He and his agents wanted him to go to a market with a larger Chinese community. Okay, I understand that. But Stephen Curry doesn't really have much of a choice when he's picked by the Warriors instead of the Knicks.

Suck it up for a few years until free agency then go to the market of your choice.

That is changing- every player now has the option of playing overseas, and they can make pretty good money.
Josh Childress signed to play with a Greek Euroleague team a year ago, and reportedly the deal was for much more than he was getting offered by NBA teams. So far, mainly NBA free agents have tried this, but I think we will eventually see more drafted players try it. It won't likely be as much money as they could earn with an NBA contract, but I think we will see more players use Euro offers as leverage to negotiate better NBA deals.

Well....yes. They could save the money. They'd pass up a really good player in order to do so, though. It's not like it's a free pass to save money - the team is worse off in the short-term (and maybe long-term) for it.

This would only work in the case of a free agent as drafted players have caps on the deals they can get for the first 2-3 years. After that the NBA still has perameters in place for the other players. It is possible that someone like AP could possibly go back overseas and make more a year but then you are playing overseas and not on TV all of the time (especially depending on who he would sign w/) and how much more is it worth to do that. In AP case he could probably go back to his old team for a lot of money since he was the MVP but then if it was all about the money why wouldn't he just stayed there to begin w/.
For many of these guys it is a case where you go from being a role player to being a star by playing in those leagues.

I think the pick of Rubio and Flynn (who I like) gives Flynn a few years to either establish himself as a dependable PG and create good trade value.......... or he'll become an untouchable superstar and create trade value for Rubio (who will at the very least put up consistently similar numbers overseas) ........or he'll flop and open the door for Rubio. Either way the Wolves will have their PG position tied up for the next several years.

The Wolves weren't going anywhere for the next few years anyway so this double PG pick fits nicely into a 3-5 year re-building plan. Who knows. A trade of either Rubio or Flynn could result in the Wolves getting the next Beasley, Griffin, or even LeBron.
