Time for a verbal?

I still want a four-year player. Look long term here.

Absolutely. I don't think anyone is looking for someone to fill a scholarship at this point and then come in and contribute next year. Get a 4-year guy with the ability to step in as a junior who knows the system and be a solid performer.

That is and always has been the coach's preference, too. But it is not as simple as just choosing to go with a 4-year vs. a 2-year recruit. They looks at all aspects of the kid and how he will help Bradley. I believe their top priorities now are a couple prep kids, but if they don't pan out, I would rather see them go after someone who can play and contribute next year, even if it's a juco, rather than a high school kid that is a project.

I would hope their preference is four-year guys over two. Unfortunately it hasn't been that way the last few years (some of this is to make up for recruiting mistakes with guys like Williams, Fears, Buckys, Brown, Crawford, etc.)

I understand coaches look at all aspects of a kid and how he fits a program. If they weren't I would wonder what they are doing.

We do kinda disagree. I would take a HS project that could redshirt and grow over a JUCO guy. Especially late JUCO guys. They tend to be greatly overrecruited because so many teams have needs and are desperate. I don't want to fall into that trap. A prep school kid would be a nice option. I would even take a DI transfer (after their freshman season) and get three years of that over a JUCO guy.

Ok...now I am starting to get worried. We need to fill this scholarship!

BB, Why do we need to fill this last scholarship? What is the rush or immediate need? We have 13 players, 12 scholarship players, depth in the guard and small forward position, some depth on the interior and decent experience coming back.

I am not sure that it is essential to go and get someone to fill this scholarship. I would not hate to see us hold the scholarship for next season when we lose SS, TW TCS Austin and Collins.

I dont see the immediate need this season, unless we can use the scholarship for a 4 year player who is either to good to pass up or one who is coming with the understanding he redshirts.

I agree completely. PT is always an issue and more so with a scholi being used just to award them all. Have enough players to fill the required roles on the team and have enough practice players. You can always award a one year scholi to a walk-on. Team harmony is important.

Theron Wilson, Sam Singh, Tyrone Cole-Scott, David Collins and Rashad Austin will all leave after next season and open at least 5 more scholarships next year. The will be the largest senior class in a while.

We do not need to bank a scholarship from this year so we can add another recruit (a 6th recruit) next year. It would be better to recruit now to replace the people we lose in 2009.

I see no reason not to fill all the available scholarships this year, unless we hold one for the possibility of a transfer

Exactly. A four year guy right now, even if a project, is needed. There's no reason to bank this one. I'm not demanding that we land an immediate-impact guy. I want a 4 year guy that we can get into the system now and get him ready for 2009, 2010, and beyond.

I agree.

I am not worried just yet.. needless to say, recruiting is very competitive.. guys are weighing their options and people at various schools are transferring which adds to the mix. Just dreaming out loud but I would really like to see a player here like Anderson or Twanny Beckham.

I agree - a 4 year player would be great to get if it is a good player. Don't just rule out JUCO's though. Don't forget that Theron Wilson was a late JUCO signee last year. That worked out very, very well for BU.

We have too many JUCO's already and we don't need an immediate-impact guy like we did last year. This scholarship needs to be of the 4-year variety.

I agree fully but not for the sole purpose of using a scholarship. One reason, I believe, that we have so many JC players could also be the fact that JL & staff are in on so many high end recruits that end up going other places. Because of this the level of kids that we may be able to get are usually taken so we go after the JC players more the some other schools do. Is this a bad thing? Yes and no-The yes is we miss out on some good recruits that other valley schools end up w/ but then the no is if we continue recruiting this way one of these times we are going to get that high level recruit and make all of this hard work pay off.

I think we should stop going for the blue chippers and start going for the Andrew Warren-types. We've done well with JUCO's, but I am tired of getting stuck in the position of having our recruiting class depending heavily on our spring recruits.

I would agree completely-we miss out on a lot of players that the Creighton's end up w/. I friend of mind that use to coach said he met DA one time and they were talking about recruits. DA told him that he never worries about how a player is rated or who is in on him but will he fit into my system or not.
I would say that is the #1 thing for allcoaches to look at.
