Two SIU basketball players arrested

2 players arrested for theft

One of them is Diamond Taylor but this is his third serious legal issue...
He was kicked off the team at Wisconsin when he was arrested for a dorm burglary.
Taylor then transferred to SIU but before he ever even played a game - he had a drug arrest..
now - this is the third serious legal issue....so how long of a leash is this kid on??
(but rumor is that they can't possibly be dismissed without it destroying SIU's APR, and causing scholarship loss)
Barry says, as usual, that they will be disciplined "internally"...

..and the issue with Desmar Jackson that is referred to as a minor traffic issue is actually multiple violations, failure to appear, and arrest warrant for defying bond terms..far more serious than Barry is letting on...
This sounds to me like the problems that were there at SIU ever since Chris Lowery took over, are still there

Student Athletes, Right? Well, something like that...What a disgrace.

I still feel that SIUC is spiraling downward significantly....to be replaced by SIUE in stature /recognition. New buildings/dorms/Metro St. Louis employment base and a very nice campus in a neat Edwardsville community says it so. Athletic teams are on the rise with this continuing as students continue to catch on (move from commuter to resident). Hello MVC, but several years out. Would be a better MVC choice than the states of North Dakota and South Dakota.

9/28 court dates...for both transfer players...
this is Desmar Jackson's 5th case already in the Jackson Co. court system and he hasn't even been there a year yet..
it's Taylor's 2nd plus he had the big issues at Wisconsin - but Barry is gonna need players so don't look for any severe punishment...
he's already telling the media... "that disciplinary measures would be handled internally."

This is why SIU continues to have player personnel problems, both players should be gone if Barry wishes to clean up this mess, will continue to happen unless someone has to pay the price for their bad decisions.

now both Desmar Jackson and Diamond Taylor have dropped their public defenders that Jackson had when he was missing all his court dates and ignoring the "failure to appear" and "failure to pay" notices, and Taylor had when he had his drug arrest,
and they are both now being represented by big time criminal lawyer H. Wesley Wilkins who also just happens to be one of the members of the Board of Trustees at SIU...and Foundation Board
Hmmm............someone's calling in the big dogs, huh??
I am sure there's nothing improper here....any kid on campus would be able to get this big time lawyer, right?

http://www.siuf.org/siuf_BoardDirect.asp
..this is the same lawyer that got Justin Bocot off... - http://thesouthern.com/news/local/758a8dae-2d27-11e1-bc2c-0019bb2963f4.html

H. Wesley Wilkins is on the Board of Trustees at SIU?

you are right - just the Foundation Board of Directors not the Trustees..either way - big wig at SIU
http://www.siuf.org/Accounts/Annual/07annual_report.pdf

...also a big wig in their Alumni Assoc. and big time donor...
at the $100K - $250K level in each of the past several years.....only about a dozen individuals listed any higher...

Diamond Taylor got a DUI over the weekend. I assume he is done at SIU.

From the article:
With the suspension of Taylor and plans to redshirt as many as three players, Hinson said his team will not have the depth he desires.

"The suspension puts enormous stress on our team by dwindling our numbers, but it was the best course of action for the long-term success of our program," he said.

Wasn't Diamond Taylor arrested for burglary, suspended from the team, pled to a guilty plea, had his scholarship revoked, and eventually dismissed from Wisconsin, leading to his transfer to SIU?

Wasn't he suspended last September for marijuana possession at SIU, and then allowed to play the whole season after a 1 game suspension?
http://thesouthern.com/news/local/article_ae9b6bc6-d5e4-11e0-8aec-001cc4c002e0.html

Then just a little more than a month ago, he was arrested again for burglary along with Desmar Jackson-

And now Diamond Taylor gets a DUI on top of all his other criminal and legal issues-

How many 2nd, 3rd, 4th, etc. chances does this kid get? At what point do clueless writers write about SIU running a renegade program? This isn't an isolated incident- recall the sexual assault charges leveled against Justin Bocot, the multiple run-ins with the law Desmar Jackson has had, and he hasn't even played a game there yet, and a long history of legal issues going back many years and involving many of SIU's top players, who's punishment rarely caused them to miss any games.
Just a small sampling-

Maybe Taylor might face another 1 game suspension? Or will new SIU coach Hinson get tough with the latest in a long line of thugs at SIU?

"Barry Hinson announced today that guard Diamond Taylor has been suspended indefinitely after he was charged with driving under the influence early Saturday morning."

This is sad - the kid needs to get his life in order and not be coddled and enabled by a system at SIUI that produces so many arrests and issues.....
The entire discussion by all the SIU fans on their board is about how easy he got off with his last couple violations thus was never disciplined so why should he change?/

but......you mean Taylor was NOT already on suspension??
What the hey - he came to SIU after an arrest at Wisc., then was suspended last fall after a drug arrest then got arrested again just a little over a month ago for theft.

What does a kid have to do to get suspended at SIU, get arrested a 4th time, 5th time..??

but Barry can't get tough and everyone knows it -- he is under the gun (no pun intended) to keep Taylor & the others in school and academically above failing level since SIU's APR is so precariously low that booting even one player would cost SIU a post-season ban due to APR Failure.

BTW - one interesting thing about Diamond Taylor's drug arrest -- it was a piece of info that was talked about on our message board and elsewhere for several months after it occurred in
APRIL of 2011 - and yet it later became OBVIOUS that NOBODY at SIU knew about the arrest and certainly Chris Lowery was totally unaware of it until the discussion about it
was re-started on Sept. 1st on the Saluki board --- then the media picked up on it and Lowery suddenly found out, and subsequently suspended Taylor as a direct result of
his arrest being "outted" on the message board in this post five months after we had talked about it on BradleyFans - LINK

ps- SIU men's basketball's APR was 908 last year - precariously low and if it fails to improve they would face a post-season ban...even one player booted who doesn't finish their courses would drop to the danger zone.
http://www.insidehighered.com/news/2012/06/21/ncaa-bans-teams-postseason-low-apr-scores

Post season ban? Do you think they have a chance at post season play besides the MVC Tournament? I'd dump Taylor in a heart beat and sen a message to the rest of the team. Hinson needs to talk to the powers that be and let them know that keeping this guy around will not really help the program in the long run and the short term prospect look dim regardless.

What's wrong with this country? I'll have zero respect for SIU if Taylor comes back to their team.

interesting ESPN column that repeatedly uses the terms...
"mistakes"
"poor decisions"
"poor behavior"
"setback" (in how he conducts himself)
"violation of team rules"
http://espn.go.com/blog/collegebasketballnation/post/_/id/64461/sius-diamond-taylor-in-trouble-again
...and yet they do kinda argue for dismissal at this point...

..at what point do we stop calling this behavior a mistake and start labeling it willful and repeated criminal behavior and dismiss the repeat perpetrators...
There's a certain dignity to the position of D-I scholarship-athlete that demands such - and it hurts the entire sport when so many repeat perpetrators are coddled and allowed to stay WITHOUT signs of repentance or correction and allowed to become repeat violators.
I have always been on record as supporting kids who have one or two (non-violent) violations and giving them a chance to redeem themselves and show they have changed their behavior....such is life and there but for the grace of God.....etc...

But this is at least he 4th substantial violation involving arrest and court action - two of which involve substance use/abuse that his scholarship contract prohibit him from doing.

I agree T! I'm all about 2nd chances but there has to be a line drawn somewhere. What are we saying to all the kids that play it straight? Again, if SIU does not give him the boot I'll most definitely will not pull for them against anyone in the conference. It would be disgraceful for the University, MVC, The State of IL and college basketball in a whole if he's given a 5th try. As much as I have criticized BU's disciplinary approach (too harsh at times), the message they send is the correct one. The morals of our society is getting a bit warped IMO and I'm fairly liberal compared to most in Peoria.

New SIU basketball coach Barry Hinson finds himself juggling razors. The basketball team??™s academic record under Lowery was so poor that SIU faces serious NCAA sanctions if any more basketball players leave the team without graduating.

I am sorry, but if Barry Hinson keeps Taylor on the team after all his issues, and thumbing his nose at those in authority who have granted him more chances than he deserves, and uses this lame excuse, I will really lose a lot of the respect I had for him.
