UNC's Ty Lawson/Gambling

tornado

New member
sounds like he's the next Michael Jordan.....ex-UNC guy with gambling habits!

He talks about his gambling winnings at the Final Four.

(Curry was the only mid-major player even on the ballot)

there is a little publicity and negative press coming from all of this...

"Team spokesman Steve Kirschner said the 21-year-old is legally of age to visit a casino.
"I'm just amazed that people are going to make a big deal about it," Kirschner said.
While neither illegal nor a violation of NCAA rules, gambling is a touchy issue
NCAA president Myles Brand said the organization only prohibits gambling on college and professional sports.
But Brand said he would prefer athletes don't gamble at the casinos.
"Well, I warn against that slippery slope. ...it's highly discouraged."

but note one of Lawson's own remarks...
"Lawson said he played only craps and earned his winnings in about an hour.
"The only time I lost was in Reno; that's when everybody on the team lost,"
he said. "It's the only place I lost. The other five or six times I did gamble, I
won at least $500."

when were the "other 5-6 times the kid has gambled", as he only recently turned 21!!

also the team was in Reno to play on Dec. 31, 2008, and at that time only a handful of Lawson's teammates were of legal age to gamble...so what does he mean by...
"everybody on the team lost"?

anyway.....what's legal isn't always expediant and sensible....I think I agree with the Myles Brand comments...the college kids should keep out of casinos.

Good grief. The kid had a good time. Won some money. It was all legal. Good for Ty Lawson.

How many of us have never been to a casino?

I agree. Big deal. The guy is legal to go play so what he wants to do with his money should be up to him. As long as he isn't breaking any rules, then it really isn't hurting UNC. Seems like somebody trying to make a big deal out of something that isn't.

I never go to casinos....who was it that said gambling was a tax on the stupid...?

Sorry T, can't knock something til you've tried it. Not everyone that goes there becomes an addict and loses all their money and is stupid. Some people can go, gamble a small amount of money, and hang out with their friends while having a good time.

If UNC players that are old enough to go want to then who are we to say no. Maybe it helps build chemistry because they are doing some kind of activity together. They aren't breaking any rules and as long as they use their own money, it doesn't matter.

I understand Miles' comments...but agree with most on here....

He is of legal age and I dont see a problem with him gambling.

I plan on going to Vegas twice this year....once for a bachelor party/golf outing...and the other for the tourney with BU....I will be partaking of some gambling and hopefully coming back a winner!

The lotto is the tax on those who are bad at math.. Gambling is too, but on a much larger scale...

But apparently I'm not supposed to judge, so.... who cares if someone goes and limits themselves to a small amount and has a night out with their friends... It's probably not much worse than a bar crawl.

Sorry T, can't knock something til you've tried it. ....
long ago when in college I went out west and had a few days in Vegas....it was fun, the nickel slots and glitz....so I understand where you're coming from...

but lots of people do gamble away their savings, their kids' college fund, and the money they have to live on. Is it any wonder that any town that gets gambling is shortly thereafter loaded to the gills with "Fast Loan" and "Payday Loan" enterprises that pop up in old Pizza Huts and burger joints.
It is no secret that lots of people gamble away money that they don't even own.....one of my own employees who made pretty danged good money (courtesy of me) gambled herself and husband into terrible debt and had to file bankruptcy, lost their home, and had their cars repossessed... and it ruined their lives.
Also...unlike virtually every other business, service profession, or manufacturing industry, gambling creates essentially NO NEW WEALTH..it just re-distributes the wealth from those who lose their money.

You could say the same thing about religion and the 10 percenters, bottom line as with anything it's all about moderation, whether it's gambling, alcohol, religion or even message boards......;)

Just imagine if we had the paradice on the good side of the river. We wouldn't have to worry about some asinine museum, and maybe then we don't have to stare across the river to the assend of a WalMart.

Hey, watch your mouth... You don't want to mess with this EP alum ;)
