Valley RPI

The MVC is still ranked 10th in conference RPI, but the gap between the MVC and the 9th ranked conference has widened. We'll probably see a jump when MVC teams start playing some better opponents this weekend.

Evansville, Drake, Northern Iowa, and Missouri State are the teams dragging the conference RPI down so far. However, Bradley's Strength of Schedule is 279- the worst in the league. It will also get a nice boost Saturday.

Wow, I was kind of heartened by our start to the season, but having a bottom 20% ranked schedule thus far reminds me just how easy our schedule has been to this point...

The numbers are still in their formative stages. Not worried yet, except it feels like we're losing ground to the WCC and MWC. It's safe to cede being behind the typical power 6 plus A-10 for the year.

I'm going to focus on how we've looked as a team - I don't remember too many games last season in which we looked good for most of the game - whether it was vs. SE Missouri St. or Missouri St.

I would rate our performance thus far as:

Very good (IUPUI, CMU)
Good (Eastern IL)
Mediocre (UTPA, UT-Martin)
Poor (USF)

even USF?? I wouldn't call them a cupcake but they do have a mediocre RPI of 130 - and their only other wins are over 180+ RPI opponents
IUPUI on the other hand STILL hasn't beaten anyone whose RPI is better than 315!!!

That worries me a bit, because IUPUI looked decent when we played them, but they seem to have played poorly vs. everyone else.

If IUPUI were to face CMU, I would think IUIPUI beats them by 10+ (based on how both teams looked vs. BU), but maybe the way WE played had to do with how they looked.

BTW I think this weekend might be hard on the MVC's RPI and I hope I am wrong but I think it won't be pretty --

-I think the Valley will go 0-1 tonight as Drake will likely lose at Nevada

-and will unfortunately go only 1-6 tomorrow (I think ISU will lose at Louisville, Indiana State will lose to visiting New Mexico, St. Joe's will stun Creighton, Aces will lose at Colorado State, Missouri State's struggles will continue against Oral Roberts, but UNI ought to be able to beat UW-Milwaukee in Cedar Falls, and BU will take Michigan to OT but the refs - ahhh... I mean the Wolverines will sadly prevail)

-Sunday Wichita will clobber Air Force but it won't be that helpful to the Valley's resume

so the weekend will give us just 2 (maybe 3) wins against 6 or 7 losses

RPI is odd. Sometimes you can lose to a team and your RPI can get better. Not saying that happens with us if we lose to Michigan, but I bet we don't take a big hit with RPI on a loss.

Drake has played well so far this season, just can't clise games late. They need a win at Nevada tonight - that would give Valley a lift.
I expect 2 wins on Sat. and 3 would be huge for the Valley. Hoping Indy St. can pull off the upset.

Drake does win at Nevada -- 76-66

one other interesting game last nite - televised on ESPN...
Tennessee lost at Georgetown 37-36 in a very ugly game...
shooting percentages were very low, they two teams combined to shoot 4-23 from the three-point line and only 7-20 combined from the FT line

Both teams have a roster full of star recruits...

The MVC conference RPI jumped after this weekend's games, and they are now ranked 9th in conference RPI.-

What is surprising is how far down the CAA, CUSA, Horizon, MAC, and other conferences are this year.

Bradley is currently 5th in the MVC in RPI rank-
http://warrennolan.com/basketball/2013/conference/Missouri Valley

Bradley's SOS jumped all the way up to 159th-
http://warrennolan.com/basketball/2013/sos

Here are the SOS numbers for the 10 MVC teams- not so good this year, none in the top 80.
Wichita State 84
Illinois State 85
Creighton 87
Missouri St. 125
Bradley 159
Drake 172
Indiana St. 183
Southern Ill. 227
Northern Iowa 243
Evansville 244

#12 rpi with an undefeated record wouldn't get in?

I think tornado was looking at the SOS and mistaking it for the RPI numbers.

Here are the MVC RPIs-

Wichita State 12
Creighton 49
Illinois State 59
Southern Ill. 82
Bradley 103
Indiana St. 149
Drake 179
Evansville 191
Northern Iowa 243
Missouri St. 307
