Well.....Creighton 73 BU 64

We are what we thought we were

We are what we thought we were

Is it safe to say that this BU team will need to win with intense defense and free throws? We lack a consistent scorer from the low post, and without a guard who can effectively and consistently score from the perimeter (3's), this team will get exposed by teams like Creighton.

On a brighter note, it's nice to see EM's development. He doesn't play scared like frosh. tend to do.

It's too early (and Cub Fan-like) to say wait till next year, because we're still very much in the hunt, but you have to admit it's tempting to let your mind wander to next year when we WILL have both lost post scoring AND perimeter shooting!

A little upset, disappointed, etc... last night to comment. But after sleeping on it...

Good defensive teams are going to be able to expose our weakness of no low post scoring and limited (at best) outside shooting. I agree we are going to have to pull this off with defense and ft shooting.

I felt that our defense was pretty good last night but we could not hit the fts and our offense was horrible. Also what was up with the 3 t.o.s in 45 seconds?!?

Came crashing back down to earth and reality last night! Time to refocus and get back at it.

After reading a few posts I agree with a few things....we DO indeed have a VERY small margin for error. If we are not getting rebounds and we don't hit our free throws...we are in trouble.

The better team with the better players won last nite. They kinda did to us what we did to ISU. Made it tough for us to get tot the hole and when we did...lots of blocks and turnovers.

Forced to shoot to many threes and not hit em.

4-0 is a great start.....next 4 need to be 2-2 minimum with 3-1 the goal. Allready off to 0-1 so LOTS of work to do.

CU is good and had their collective backs against the wall. Thye responded well. Would have beat anyone in the MVC home OR away with that performance.

Lets see how we bounce back. This loss doesn't kill us but NO more at home.

. Also what was up with the 3 t.o.s in 45 seconds?!?

Yes...we had ample opportunities to get back in the game.....a HUGE turning point IMO was when DC had a great block then we failed to get the rebound and they scored. That really took the wind outta MY sails and we quickly went from possibly 2-3 down to 10 just like that WITH those TO's you speak of.

I hope we can come up with a better O' against the zone....or every team we play will just stay in it! Free throws.....free throws...and more free throws! Conrats to CU.....they were the better team last night.

I didn't like our use of timeouts. JL called a TO after we scored a bucket to bring us back to 3 down with 5:45 remaining. It was a McCain layup - nice shot - right hand on the left side of the basket. Great balance and finishing around the rim.

Then JL called the timeout. He didn't sub anyone in - and IMO it allowed CU to regroup and it seemed to calm the crowd when we were about to pop. A blink of the eye later and we were down 10.

I'll admit that complaining about the use of timeouts is usually a reach. Otherwise I think Creighton was just the better team tonight.

Let's win 2 of 3 on this road trip.

I was about to say the same thing. I am not a coach, and I dont know if we had some glaring defensive matchup problem we had to address or what, but talk about a momentum killing timeout. the crowd was starting to get into the game (finally) and the tiemout killed us. Would have been nice to not use 3 in 45 seconds so we had a few incase we needed them...

McCain called the last timeout because he couldn't get the ball in, and that was with over 4:00 remaining. You could tell he tried to stop himself because he knew that was the last one. It was bad enough with one left, but that just killed us.

Chris Roberts with 3 points on 1-8 shooting from the field in 27 minutes. We need more from him then that against teams like Creighton. Ouch. Got 9 rebounds though.

We need to find a way to get the ball to the post against the zone. I thought CU's bigs blocked a few shots early and altered a few shots and we stopped driving to the basket. We did get Walker to foul out but Lawson never got into trouble.
Instead of going 1-9 on threes in the 2nd half I would have loved to see us drive the ball more or at least pass into SS and DC. We kind of got away from what worked in the first 4 conference games.

I would agree with you in most cases and I believe we need to work on our ability to feed the post but DC nor SS did much to warrent plays running through them yesterday. They allowed Lawson to dominate both of them and both seem not to be able to make the adjustments necessary to not be called for moving screens.

On another note the refs were consistant for the most part and called a decent game even though they call to many soft fouls in my opinion. I would wish the MVC would tell the officials to not call touch fouls. Some of TW fouls were just that. They were fouls but were really just soft touches that could have been not called.

I cannot understand why we don't toss the ball down low and back out to an open shooter from the 3....you know...the old inside-out play....instead of the aimless dribbling around the 3 pt line and weaving around wasting precious clock time and firing off a last sec shot to beat the clock? Seems like if the ball goes down low in our post it never comes back out and they are almost always going to shoot it!

Ha Mike, I am not sure I understand this. Last night SS 0-3 and DC 0-1 thats 4 total shots by the to post players for the night. Does that mean they only got the ball 4 times in the post and they shot it every time:?: There was 18 3's shot by BU last night and they made 6. Don't get me wrong, I am NOT trying or looking for a reason to justify the terrible play that was displayed by our post players:!:
SS had just no fire under him and hardly put a body on anyone and DC he was just in one of his daze modes again. We cannot Win the MVC if these two don't wake up and put a body on someone, **** it:!: Its just inexcusable from two seniors.
As for all the passing around the perimeter and taking the last sec shot I can't agree more with you:!:

I just think it would open up more good looks for the guards and make the D' have to adjust more...go ahead and watch the previous games and you'll see...every time it goes down low it almost never comes back out...so any scouting report would say...crowd the paint when the ball comes in because the post players are about to shoot! I say change it up once in a while and not be so predictable.....I said before the game that a zone against the Braves killed them for a while agaisnt isu and cu watched that game tape and employed it....either we start hitting 3's or open looks or drive into the zone passing back out to an open man or hitting someone for an open lay-up....too-much driving with no purpose IMO!

Our guards also do not know how to pass it to the post and our bigs do not work hard enough to get good low post position or they maybe just frustrated that when they are in good position they rarely receive it. Our guys need to look at how Mich. St. played against Kansas on Saturday.

I'll agree with you. And the part about the guards, goes with what BigM said about passing and passing out on the perimeter and shooting a last sec. shot as the clock runs down. Pass the ball into the post.
