What do you want in a coach?

I think we all want what those three have produced....you made a point regarding coaches moving up for me.

We can't have it both ways where we want a coach to not use BU as a stepping stone and get us to the next level...or couple of levels right now...

These schools developed great programs and there is a level of expectation when they moved people up.

If a coach does great here, they will eventually move up...the cupboard isn't bare and the program continues......I think we would love it if we had a winning program......not just one coach who wins

Barry Collier, Thad Matta, Todd Lickliter, Brad Stevens...
Dan Monson, Mark Few...
Skip Prosser, Thad Matta, Sean Miller...

We are always worried about how long a coach is going to stay, if they build the program right, it doesn't matter.

Easy someone who represents the University with class, takes the student athlete part very serious and creates a winning foundation which will help the University with its primary mission. All 3 are very important and need to be balanced. Winning consistently helps a coach achieve the above more easily.

You kiddin...I'd love it if we had a new coach every 4 years...

That would mean we'd be winning!

And good coaches who get promoted to BCS schools often develop good assistants who can take over for them and keep the program running smoothly. Look at Butler and Gonzaga as perfect examples.

As I read the various threads about winning, injuries, state of the program, etc....I thought about what you want in a coach.

These are just some things that came to mind (in no particular order):

1. teaches fundamentals...players shoot, pass, defend well

2. sound defensively....in position, flexible, know the X's and O's

3. gets the most out of or develops players ....growth in skill is obvious

4. good recruiter....team is deep and talent is varied by position.

5. contends for titles (league, tournament, etc)

6. instructs players outside of basketball...ie, being a good student, being a better man, working hard

7. coaches motivate players.........to achieve, play hard, buy in to program

I am sure there are more things you look for, and feel free to add to the list.

In the end, I started wondering.....

How many of these things does Jim do at Bradley?

I just thought this was a good thread to check back on...

It seems Coach Ford had most all of those qualities while at KSU. This was the main reason he was hired to replace a guy who was fired because, over 9 years, he did very few of those things. I imagine if Coach Ford fails to execute those listed objectives he will be fired long before 9 years have elapsed. 8)

If you want to apply the list to Geno, I think he hits most of those over the course of his career. At Bradley, it's hard to judge some of those, as he has only 1 year here. Contending for titles is certainly not fair in year 1. I do think the team improved over the course of the year. Much will be decided in years 2 and 3.

Can't wait to find out....Go Bradley!
