What Makes A Fan?

Oh Sheesh OOB. I don't take this that seriously. I do enjoy good back and forth and discussion. I know some may see it as adversarial--I do not. To me you don't grow, get better, and achieve if you aren't willing to talk about and listen to other points of view. I am also of the belief that we should all question things and not just believe everything we are told.

Those are just my feelings. I love BU hoops and the University. Nothing anyone says on this board will change that. If you only saw the emails/text messages/money I spent on Bradley hoops you would understand. I have a close group of about five BU fans/alums who absolutely obsess about everything BU does during the season. I plan all events around BU games. Those fans laugh when they see others think I don't care. I don't worry if some guy I don't know thinks I'm a fan or not. No time for that. Of course much of that shows I don't have much of a life :)

But I do admit to enjoying conversations that challenge people to think. To me, that's life.

When I go home I go home. I don't drag this stuff along. But, I could help you with that Cub problem if you want :)

I find NOTHING wrong with what you have said and agree:!: As for the CUB help, I really do not need it as I was just having fun with you, as you see I am a SOX FAN:!: Go get them Big Jim, ($1,000 for every HR he hits to our kids in the Children's Hospital):biggrin::biggrin: You have a good one:!:

Do you really believe this to be true? Who comes on this board, spends time talking about BU basketball, voices their opinions about the state of the program, proclaims themselves a fan of Bradley basketball, but yet actually deep down wants them to fail?

That makes no sense to me...and I would seriously doubt it to be the reality here.

I find that hard to believe as well. Maybe he's referring to people who won't donate with the current regime in place? I don't know. If people really post on here who claim to be Bradley fans but want Bradley to fail, they have serious issues with how they spend their time.

(quite possibly because of my very open and staunch pro-BU position...)
I get and HAVE GOTTEN PM's frequently from those very posters who public appear to support BU, then privately attack and express glee every time they lose....and even giggle with joy just to rub it in when there are failures. (and those pesky off-court issues.)
I even have a couple saved messages from a certain poster who downgrades anyone else who thinks he's not the ultimate BU fan, but privately he expresses the most objectionable hatred for (by name) the head coach and several people in the athletic department.
I have the proof I need those people DO exist, but you will need to solve the riddle for yourself.

DaCoach and Tornado are probably referring to anti-Les fans as opposed to anti-BU fans, but the anti-Les fans have unknowingly become anti-BU fans by hoping Les fails.

But if Coach Les fails, then that means BU fails. So, there's the paradox for anti-Les fans. How do you enjoy seeing Coach Les lose but also lament that BU lost?

This is fairly common though in sports, right? You're a fan of a team but might dislike the current coaching or personnel.

To get back to the topic:

One who thinks about it in the morning when they wake up.

One who thinks about what they are going to eat during the game.

One who hopes the video stream will be good and hold.

One that doesn't want to hear "we're stuck on a number".

One that can still can go to sleep at night even if we lose;-)

Ser_solace...in any of the posts has there been talk of people wanting to see Jim Les fail or lose? I have yet to see it in any of the comments.

I can only speak for myself. I want to see Jim Les win every game he coaches. I want to see BU win the MVC title. I want to see BU go back to the NCAA Tournament. I prefer it all happen with Jim Les as the coach.

I don't know if fans can be a fan of a team/program and want the coach to fail. I know I can't.

If others feel differently, I'm sure they will say so.

That says it all. Can't be any clearer than that:)

Cubs fans are "fans".

Bears fans are "fans".

Being a "fan" means you don't give a rat's @ss about any other team that your team may play. You simply cheer for YOUR team, come he11 or high water.

When your a "fan" your team is like family. You NEVER kick them to the curb! YOU can boo them and criticize them .... BUT NOBODY ELSE BETTER! ;)

I think that those who are offended by ANY criticism they read about Bradley and Bradley basketball are "fans".... like me. :) I can say what's wrong with my Braves BUT YOU CAN'T! ;) Get it?

don't know if i can let this one go.

yes, some (maybe most) cub fans are dumb north-siders who like the idea of getting drunk in teh bleachers and hanging out with friends.
But i feel bears fans are for real. The ones i have met, and dealt with are die hard. It is harder to be a iffy football fan because it is such an epic event (football season that is). 15ish games vs over 100....

to understand a fan, I will cite a commercial I saw. it shows a cub fan cheering as a rollercoaster sound goes and people scream. then again with a sad looking cub fan. Again happy cub fan, roller coaster. Then finally another sad.
"To keep going on a ride like this...it's not just like...it's love"

A fan stands by the team NO MATTER WHAT! through thick or thin. Yea you can get mad (see Dusty Baker). yea you can get confused (see Thomas Jones trade). but you can also cheer a team no matter what (see Bears 4th quarter superbowl XLI).

I'm not a fan of the Arizona Cardinals. But when they made the superbowl...they were who i rooted for. I am a fan of teh bears...when they didn't make the playoffs i was very upset.

I think about the day I will move away from Illinois (not very soon :))...and need to watch a different baseball, football, basketball, hockey team...and i dont know if i can do it. I feel once you are declaring yourself a fan...you can't get out of it. You're a fan from then on out.

I am curious to know if people think you can "stop" being a fan (true fan) of a team...

A fan is one who loves their team regardless of place or finish but when they are losing there can some real meanness to the person you blame for their ineptitude. I'm an Orioles fan, alway have been and always will and I wish Angelos would sell the team. I would though never hope the O's lose so Angelos would sell the team. So anyone who wants BU to lose in order for JL to leave is not a true BU fan in my book.

That's a great example of being a fan Buconner :) . I'll tell you another story. I had a friend in college that grew up on the South Side and was a lifelong Bears fan. After college he got a job and moved to Dallas. One day, while visiting him in Dallas, I found out that he was suddenly a Dallas Cowboy fan:( . Even told me he worked out at the same gym. I was shocked! :( P!ssed! :( :( :(

I lost ALL respect for my friend that day!................. I'm serious:(

Oh Lord, B4L, now you have done it:!: Next Thread: WHATS A FRIEND:doubt::lol:

what makes a person a "fan" of a team.?

Experts have defined how to tell where a person's loyalties lie and whether his character matches his words.
Check where he spends his time, his money, and his passion, and passion cannot be criticism.
This test works equally well to prove if someone is a fan as it does to show if someone is a devoted Christian, Muslim, parent, caregiver, etc.

Indeed if I were going to DRAFT a team of Bradley "fans" to compete head to head against any other team of Bradley fans in any endeavor or competition...

I would examine the prospective draft candidates on just such a basis. Where do they spend their time....do they show up at Bradley functions, to they keep in touch with the university, do they support, give their financial support or only talk of their support.
Do their treat their program with love, admiration, respect, and unconditionally continue their support, or is their support conditional upon something in return or some performance threshold?
It's the same when examining fans of BU or the Cubs or the Dallas Cowboys.
I doubt I'd draft someone no matter what they say or how loudly they claim to be a fan if they didn't attend, watch, and listen to games, didn't give obvious tangible support, and lastly....in the process of "vetting" the candidates to see who I'd draft, you look at the words they've put into the record, so you don't end up regretting drafting someone who backs off their pledge or support because Bradley hasn't done enough for them or because they have turned against BU.
In the end, the ones I'd draft stand alone in words and deeds.

Amen Brother. There are times I have and will disagree with things going on (much like parents do their children) yet I will always support BU basketball.

Anyone who knows me wouldn't argue any of the points you stated. See you in the draft room tornado.

Excellent comparison! You don't have to like them all the time, but you sure do have to love them!
