'What should "O" do?'

IlliBraves said:
I searched for him on Facebook. The results came up with his page, as well as groups titled Osiris Eldridge is the TRUTH, MVC Dominaton, and O, DON'T GO.

I know MVC Domination is a group supporting the whole conference, not dedicated to him.

Nope, if you score more because your shooting pct. goes up, or you help your team win more games, or advance in the conference or tournament, those are all proofs of getting better or being better.
Anyone wonder why all these guys scored way more than Kevin Durant and were NOT named All Americans?
Two of these guys took 20 shots per game!

Reggie Williams, VMI 28.8 points per game
Trey Johnson, Jackson St. 27.1 points per game
Morris Almond, Rice 26.6 points per game
Gary Neal, Towson 25.6 points per game

There is more to the game than scoring points Old Guy.

Usually All-Americans have a well-rounded game.

As far as Eldridge goes, his numbers are best in conference games. In Conference games only he averaged nearly 6 boards per game. (5.7) That was good enough for 12th in the Valley overall. He was the only freshman listed in the top 15 for rebounding. Pretty impressive at 6'3.

And scoring wise he averaged 9.8 non-conference and 11.2 for conference games.

Doesn't this kid call himself "King O" :?:  That's partly why I found this to be so believable.

I logged on, found the group and read the messages this morning and on the surface it looked real. If this was a hoax, it had to have been a person pretty close to him who had his password and pic of him with a puzzled look on his face in his dormroom. Doubtful, but I guess it's possible.

Oh, and for the record, I'll take Andrew Warren over Osiris. This isn't to say Eldridge isn't good (he certainly is); just that I love Andrew's well-rounded game, his shooting range and composure and unselfishness. I think he can be something special with the increased minutes he'll see in years to come, and would have challenged for FOY honors on a more depleted team.....

Jeremy Crouch averaged 8.3ppg as a freshman, not too far from OE's 9.5ppg.
That did not guarantee anything, as he dropped to about half that his sophomore year.
Only time will tell.

It reminds me of the Cellus vs. Najeeb arguments, the Jim Les vs. Porter Moser arguments, the 2003-2005 BU recruiting classes vs. the 2003-2005 ISU recuriting classes arguments, and the DRuff vs. Al Stewart vs. Boo Richardson arguments that we heard all the time on this and other boards. And I can think of more...

Time has solved those arguments once and for all.

Cellus v Najeeb...Tornado stop! I thought we already had the 'good laugh' thread....

What would 'O' do?

What would Brian Boitano do?

I am tired after a long workday, but when exactly was Osiris compared to Crouch or did I misinterpret your post?

Oh, I'm not saying that just because Warren plays for us. I'm basing it on what I've seen from both players (and to be fair, I haven't seen as much of Eldridge as I would have liked to because ISU was only on TV, what, 2 times?).

But looking at the stats, they confirm my impressions....

Warren had 8 more assists than turnovers; Osiris was -3.

Warren was .833 from the charity stripe, .457 from beyond the arc, and .463 overall from the field.
Osiris, .788, .377 and .383

Warren: 9 blocks (obviously, due to the natural height advantage) and 14 steals; Osiris, 2 and 32.... But of course OE had almost twice as many minutes.

This isn't to say I wouldn't want Osiris on our team. I definitely would. But not if it meant giving up AW.

I know that Redbird Nation hasn't had much to gloat about lately, but you don't need to disparage all the other freshmen in the league to make yourself feel better about Osiris. He's a good player with lots of potential, but he's not the only one, so why not just leave it at that?

I don't remember ever disparaging AW. Mostly because I never have. To be fair I can't really comment on Warren either because the games I saw BU play on TV, he never left the bench. I know he played well at RA this year, but I wasn't at the game. I can't comment on his play because I haven't seen him. Osiris was voted FOY by the media and coaches and I suspect they know more than we do (at least the coaches). I'll let that speak for itself.

I guess we each have the same disadvantage in not seeing the other kid play? Very true ISU is never on TV. I'd say we leave it at that. good plan

:D

no, I was only using example to predict a sophomore slump.
Teams will study game films and have more to go on, and he will be defended better.

I think that this has gotten way off topic. Now we are comparing AW and King O. What King O should do.......which was the topic of this mess, is shut up, get in the gym and start working. End of Story!

So you didn't write:

DannyCooksey said:
every coach in the league except maybe Les would take Eldridge over warren every day and twice on Sunday so what's your point?

:?: I find that questionable at best. And you even admit later on that you haven't seen Warren.

Honestly, I don't think one player is that much better than the other. Eldridge went to a place where he could get more minutes, helping to put up bigger total numbers, and this undoubtedly helped with FOY voting. Of course, the downside to taking the immediate playing time is the losing he had to endure (Typically, teams have a lot of playing time available for a reason)....

Yep I wrote it. I stand by it. I don't think it's dipsparaging in any way, shape, or form. It's not a knock at all against Warren rather a compliment to Eldridge. The Valley FOY, who was recruited by at least 4 Valley schools would probably be chosen by the vast majority of the league's coaches over a fellow freshman that saw limited time on a better team. I don't see where I said anything out of the ordinary here. I think most Valley fans would agree with this also.

If you feel that's offensive to AW, then I guess I apologize. But then it would also be offensive to Bone, Miles, Stinson, Young, Holmstrom as well.

I saw a tape of the game at RA and he (AW) played well. that's all I saw. 1 game. I can't say that I am an authority on him. You guys are all high on him, so he's probably a good player. Les doesn't sign garbage players.

and yes...........this did get off topic. I helped get it off topic so i apologize for my part.

OE is a good ballplayer and did fine for being a freshman.
Here are some comparable stats:

Player.........scoring avg.........points per shot...........points per minutes played
O. Eldridge (ISU)......9.5...................1.16.........................0.4
J. Young (Drake)......9.3...................1.18.........................0.4
M. Stinson (InSU).....9.4...................1.17.........................0.4
I. Miles (CU)............6.1...................1.20.........................0.3
A. Warren (BU)........4.1...................1.5...........................0.3

Here are the figures for the top shooting guards Nate Funk and Jeremy Crouch:
N. Funk (CU)...........17.7.................1.38..........................0.5
J. Crouch................13.8.................1.40..........................0.5

I am not so sure that any one of the freshman players couldn't have boosted their scoring average a bit, had they played more minutes, and taken more shots, and especially if they played on teams where they were a main offensive option.

Hey Stat Freak, can you calculate a standard deviation based upon total points per game?

DC-- I think most of the Valley coaches would love to have a player with Eldridge's talents.
But a player is MORE than just the sum total opf his talents, as I am sure you'd agree.
I need to point no further than players like Allen Iverson or Terrell Owens to convince you.
The player's attitude is pretty important. Doesn't it bother you that for a freshman who really hasn't proven all that much, he does seem to have a larger than life view of self.
In fact, I fully expect him to make some demands before he agrees to play for the new coach,
so look for Eldridge to get either a family member or his ex-high school coach hired as an assistant at ISU
