One of Wichita State's top incoming recruits, junior college transfer Earl Watson, has been ruled ineligible-

Watson is a strong 6'7" power forward from juco powerhouse Chipola College who was projected to help fill the position vacated by the loss of All-MVC player Carl Hall, and Ehimen Orukpe. Watson has been rated as high as top 10 juco players in the class of 2013. Wichita State should still be strong and will likely still be the pick to finish 1st, but this loss could hurt their chances for another post season run.

Yes, I think he was prepared for this, even though I think he would have preferred to have Watson. Now they will have to rely much more on Chadrack Lufile, who is not nearly the same type of player. But if Watson had qualified, I am sure somehow Marshall would have resolved the scholarship situation. :)
 
A few points of clarification.

Everyone knew that Watson was going to struggle to become eligible in the spring semester. Carter was recruited for that reason. Both players are 6-7, 230 with Watson having the better athleticism and Carter being the more skilled PF. Last year Hall was the starting PF and Early came off the bench until the NCAA tourney where Hall moved to center and Orukpe came off the bench. This year Early will start along side D-I transfer Kadeem Coleby and Carter will come off the bench. Lufile will maintain the same role he had last year. Morris will fill in for the departed Jake White.

The only rankings I saw for JUCO players in 2013 has Carter at 8 and Watson in the mid 30s. Watson did graduate from JUCO but needs to pass a math class prior to extending his career. He has signed an LOI for the past 3 years, so he may be at WSU in 2014, but I'm really not sure what the plans are.
 
Nobody in Wichita was expecting Watson to be on the team. If Early starts and plays mostly PF, which some think will happen, depth definitely isn't an issue. Coleby should be fine at the 5 with Carter playing PF when Early is out or has moved to SF.

Personally, I don't expect Lufile to play much more than he did last year. Shaq may be a FR, but reports are that he holds his own in summer pickup games and already has some decent post moves that should get him a fair amount of minutes.

Carter is most definitely better than Watson. Had JucoJunction released a post season rankings, I don't think Watson would have been ranked even in the mid 30s. He was getting less and less PT as the season went on. If he ever plays DI ball, I don't expect it to be in Wichita. The only way I think the staff could consider bringing him in next year is if we miss our on big man Stephen Hurt from NWF. No way they bring in two JC bigs next year.

Not that anyone here cares, but I think WSU WILL sign two JUCO bigs (and a freshman). Also, if Watson ever plays for a D-I, my money is on WSU.

It had to do with the NCAA cracking down on credits earned at certain Prep Schools. He supposedly had a full year of credits from Christian Faith Academy (in North Carolina) denied by the NCAA. Kansas' top recruit, and consensus #1 recruit in the country Andrew Wiggins also attended Christian Faith Academy. But I predict the NCAA will not rule the same on Wiggins. Previous grads include John Wall, C.J Leslie, and several others who have played for BCS schools.
 
so you think NCAA treats top BCS schools like Kentucky & Kansas differently than they treat and rule on Florida State??

Earl Watson, who was a 2013 juco recruit for Wichita State and did not qualify, returned to junior college to finish up academically and is now reclassified as a 2014 recruit. He has apparently used up his junior college eligibility and does not appear to be playing this year, but he just committed to Rhode Island for 2014.
