Wilkins?

This comment from Wilkins Sr. has me concerned a bit...

Fron the PJStar:

The elder Wilkins said the NCAA clearinghouse was awaiting his son's high school transcript, which he said was being sent from Belgium.

"I've gotta get him going," Jeff Wilkins said. "He's not in basketball shape because he doesn't play enough. But he's been playing once a week, running at the track and lifting weights."

My question is this. A 19 year old kid, who isn't currently in school, that will be playing D1 basketball hopefully in a matter of weeks, is only playing ONCE a week?

If it were me I would be training like I was preparing to storm the beaches at Normandy! Plus playing as much hoops as humanly possible.

I don't mean to overreact, as I am looking forward to having Wilkins in the mix. This just seemed a little strange

I had the same reaction, Double D.

This is an unfortunate result of NCAA rules.
From an earlier Pjstar article, JW's dad lives in Gary, IN and can only make it into "safer" Chicago gym's once a week. I'd rather JW make it to BU alive than risk it all wandering around Gary.

I'm sure Star Transport would love to hire his dad, but then the NCAA's would be all over us...

I'm sure he's shooting or whatever on his own everyday, but he's probably only able to play actual games once a week. I remember in a previous article, it was saying that his dad had to drive him to Chicago for pick-up games.

Otherwise, during the week, who is he supposed to play with? School is in session, and after class, I'm sure the good high school players are practicing with their own teams.

If all goes well, and JW is enrolled next month, he will be ready and contribute more immediately than any of the new players Bradley has.

How would he compare with Taylor Brown? I've been impressed with Brown's ability to go inside-outside, his ability to rebound, and ability to shoot the 3. I see him contributing off the bench all year. Having never seen Wilkins play, is he at or above that level already? Who would stand to lose the most minutes should he be able to play on December 22?

Are you making this statement based on things you have heard or have you actually seen him play in person?

Based on the quote from his father, It sounds like he may have problems getting up and down the floor right now. My guess is it will take him a little while to get in game shape and adjust to D1 level basketball.

Brown is more of a 4 type, and you won't see him putting the ball on the floor more than a one or two dribble move, similar to Theron Wilson. I haven't seen JW either, but from everything I have heard, he has excellent floor skills, and can dribble, pass, and drive well. He might play some 4, but he more suited as a true 3. How he will fit in is anyone's guess. I think he would play minutes that are now going to Eddren, Dodie, or Chris Roberts.

What Da Coach is saying is that even though Wilkins Sr. feels Jr. needs more conditioning right now, if and when he suits up for BU, he'll be ready to contribute right away.

What we can do right now is concentrate on the current roster and get excited for the start of the season! GO BU!!

So discussing the Wilkins situation is nothing we should be concerned with?

I just think we dissect the little that gets printed in the PJ Star about him and it gets some fans concerned. His conditioning has taken a back seat to his preparations for the SAT. Now he will have no distractions, and IMO he will be ready.

You mean we have a "4"? I thought we played 3 guards, a "3" (Wilson) and a "5". I must be watching something different. Gotcha! Just having some fun... Making a joke... Please don't delete me...

On another topic, do you like my new signature?

Although my sample size is small, I think Chris Roberts need a lot of work. His minutes need to be limited at this point IMO.

The most important thing is that they get his transcripts to the NCAA clearinghouse; otherwise it makes no difference if he is in shape.
I was told he could play any of the 3 guard positions as he can handle the ball and was also a very good shooter, I would project him as a 3 also, hopefully he will get cleared to enroll at BU and begin practicing with the team as it is important for him to get caught up if he is going to contribute much this season.
