Wish List - Our Next Coach

I agree , do any of these posters do any research before giving us names like Judson, Giacoletti and some of these other coaches that have not done well in the past, also we need to stick with a asst. that has been in the midwest for awhile so he can recruit this area.

Judson has been nowhere but the Midwest, was 74-101 at NIU, but did manage a 1st and 4th place finish, and if you add his assistant coaching experiences, at Illinois, Bradley, NIU and Illinois State, he is either head coach or top assistant with a record of 383-188...

Also add in that he himself was an academic All-American, is from the state and well-versed in the Valley and Illinois, the respect of his colleagues, His recruiting acumen, and his integrity, and yes, I would say he would be a good choice...

Monday March 7 Update:

I have combed the various threads discussing future coaches at BU. Here is an unscientific list that totals the number of posts recommending various candidates. There is probably some dupliction since some posters mention the same guy in different posts (I am too lazy to cross reference the poster with the recommendation, sue me!)...

Note: I didn't enter -1's for any candidate someone thought absolutely shouldn't be considered/selected.

Would be interesting to see which mid major/Div II coaches had the most non con/post season/tourney success vs Valley Teams in the past 5 years. Anyone want to take that research project on?

Another angle, look at teams in Mid Major Conferences which ended up with higher RPI's than the MVC did and look for coaches with best combined conference records at these schools over the past three seasons.

Some very good candidates on this list AZ. I don't know how Wayne McClain keeps getting votes, but otherwise anyone of the top 4 and even Hinson would be good choices. I know Hinson got run out of town at MSU because he "couldn't win the big games", supposedly, which we all know is a bunch of bunk since he got shafted out of the Big Dance twice. But he kept his teams in the running for championships most years and couldn't do any worse than many think he could.

Still way too early to pin down who Bradley will be leaning towards, if the future coach is even on this list. But it should be fun trying to keep the hope up that this will be a good hire.

Thanks for compiling people's nominations. I will not repeat the recommendation I already submitted, but I would like to vote for two more:

Pat Knight (just let go by Texas Tech) and
Pat Kelsey (Associate Head Coach at Xavier)

Honestly, I would like to see Bradley consider more of a national name than some of the local yocals people are talking about that I never heard of. The people I have nominated are known for and respected in the recruiting circles nationally. Plus, decent prospects are trying to get into the best program they can even if that means leading the state. Decent prospects do not care how much success a potential college coach had at Peoria High or wherever. I think the national connections of my nominees would be great for putting Bradley in a position of greater prominance in the basketball world.

You may think my nominees are out of our league (and maybe they are). But I am trying to think of 1) coaches with potential who jumped to the major level before they were ready and need to prove themselves at a mid major, or 2) an excellent assistant ready to make the jump to head coach, but maybe not for a major program just yet.

Robert Burke, Georgetown: John Thompson III already has had a couple of assistants land jobs, and Burke will be next.
Gary Close, Wisconsin: Close spent 13 years as an assistant at Iowa under Tom Davis and has been with Bo Ryan since 2003. That is a serious hoops education.
Phil Cunningham, Mississippi State: He has been the chief recruiter for the Bulldogs and has landed several top players.
Steve DeMeo, Providence: Tim Welsh's associate head coach is an excellent recruiter and floor coach.
Jerry Dunn, Michigan: Former Penn State coach probably will get another head coaching shot after hanging around the brilliant coaching mind of John Beilein.
Greg Gard, Wisconsin: Gard is the Badgers' recruiting coordinator and has been alongside Ryan for 14 seasons.
Brett Gunning, Villanova: As long as Jay Wright has been a head coach he has had Gunning with him, and that speaks volumes.
Steve Henson, UNLV: The scrappy former point guard for Lon Kruger now coaches alongside him and will lead his own program soon.
Joe Holladay, North Carolina: He's a great recruiter and floor coach who has been with Roy Williams for 14 seasons.
Chris Mack, Xavier: The Musketeers have it rolling under Sean Miller and Mack, a solid recruiter and excellent teacher.
Kevin O'Neill, Arizona: O'Neill has head coaching experience across the board and is a top defensive guru.
Philip Pearson, Alabama: Hired by Mark Gottfried upon his arrival in 1998, Pearson is one of the top recruiters in the Southeast.
Steve Robinson, North Carolina: The former FSU head coach handles the scouting for the Tar Heels and also recruits very well.
Scott Spinelli, Texas A&M: Mark Turgeon brought associate head coach Spinelli with him to Aggieland where they'll face All-Big 12 center Aleks Maric, a player recruited to Nebraska by Spinelli.
Russ Springmann, Texas: Springmann has helped the Longhorns land seven McDonald's All-Americans over the past six seasons.
Melvin Watkins, Missouri: Watkins, associate head coach to Mike Anderson, has plenty of head coaching experience and can recruit with anybody.

I know for sure Mack is now HC at Xavier and O'Neil is no longer at Arizona as Miller took over there...

Although I kind of liked Barry Hinson when he was at SMS you do not fire Jim Les, pay Jim Les a buyout to get Barry Hinson. That would be insane.

I think Lickliter or Hinson would be good hires for BU based on everything I've read here the last day or so. I'm not as "in the loop" as most others seem to be though.

If we're talking attendance numbers, the rivs drew over 9000 for the game featuring the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders. Jus sayin.....

Add Bob Ortegal for me please. Mark Cuban just fired him as the Mavs color man. Not only did Bob play for Bradley, he has D1 coaching experience at Drake. Just joking about Bob being a candidate since he is pushing 70. He is a class act though. Cuban fired him and most of the local sports media were outraged. Bob had nothing but gracious comments for the Mavericks and said he had no hard feelings. He is really a stand up guy and a true gentleman.

Hinson was a great person, Lickliter lost at Iowa to UNI and Drake, you do not fire Les for either one of these guys because they would not be an improvement.
Wayne McClain has lost any appeal he would of had 9 years ago after winning several state championships, too much time has now gone by and he has lost any recognition that could have helped him in recruiting.
Come on posters, we need to do better research then what I see as far as votes.

Nobody knows who will apply, be asked to consider the position, etc...

I was definitely ready for Lick to get out at Iowa... No doubt. But I think that job has proven difficult and Lick may have been in over his head at the b10 level. He may not fare so poorly back here...

I agree, Lickliter would be an awesome choice. Does he want to "step back down the ladder" to a mid-major at this point? I've said this before, but Butler would be a good aspirant program for Bradley to model themselves on going forward. Lickliter or Graves make intriguing candidates because they've done it on this level and sustained success.

74-101 , you must be joking if you want someone with that record as a head coach in a lesser conference, had his chance and failed.
