Worst team in the state

Northwestern, hands down. Last night, the Wildcats almost lost at home to Division III Wheaton, winning 41-39. Wheaton led 18-16 at the half.

Yet Northwestern has a double-digit win over DePaul. I'd say Chicago St, NIU, EIU, or WIU probably take the cake as far as worst in Illinois.

Then again, EIU has a win at TennTech who beat Bradley who has a double-digit win over Depaul. :-P

Northwestern will surprise some people.

Remember, they play the Princeton style offense, which won't "wow" anybody and will keep both teams in most games.

Second, Wheaton kids just finished up finals on Wednesday and about 1000 Wheaton (NU has been out all week) fans were in attendance and loud making it almost like a home game for them.

I look for them to make some noise in San Juan. If they win against Tn Tech, they'll likely get a crack at Vanderbilt and then either a no more than 1 or 2 loss Virginia or Central Florida squad.

If they do, the Wildcats are a solid NIT team. Go figure.

If I had to pick one, I would say WIU. I think EIU will be middle-to-upper OVC this year. Chi St would have made noise in the Mid-Con. WIU won't. The MAC is so bad, NIU could still manage a divisional title.

You HAVE GOT to be kidding. You even used the word 'solid' describing their potential for an NIT bid. That would suggest they are a bubble NCAA team.

Ok, I think they can get past TennTech. (note: I said CAN) Then, who is to say Vandy is gonna be a quality enough win to put them solidly in the NIT. But if they win that one, you then think just a 'crack at' a 1-2 loss Virginia or C Florida deserves a spot amongst 97 teams playing in March. (you didn't say a win, you said a 'crack at'. But even with a win, I am not convinced it makes them a 'solid' NIT team - they could go 0-fer in the B10, but hey, they won the San Juan so give 'em an NIT bid.)

I'm gonna follow this.

Please tell me how you like your crow.

(and just in case, I prefer mine charred from the grill 8) )

They are 6-2 now (and just 8 points from perfect). I predict at least 2-1 in San Juan. That puts them at 8-3.

They then have Loyola (MD) and Northwestern St at home, to put them at 10-3. They also have a late season non-con against Texas-Pan Am, which I am counting as a win.

I see B10 results like this:

W @ PSU
W vs. Mich
L @ MSU
L vs. Wisky
L @ OSU
W @ Minn
L vs. OSU
W vs. Minn
L @ Wisky
L vs. Illinois
W vs. PSU
W @ Iowa
L @ Illinois
L vs. Purdue
W vs. Indiana
L @ Purdue (7-9 in B10 play)

10-3 + 8-9 = 18-12

First of all, your B10 record for them should be 7-9, not 8-9. So 17-12.

But let me get this straight, wins over:

DePaul
Brown
North Florida
Miami-Florida
Western Michigan
a Non-Div I
W vs Tennessee Tech
W vs Vandy
W vs Loyola (Maryland)
W vs Northwestern St
W @ PSU
W vs. Mich
W @ Minn
W vs. Minn
W vs. PSU
W @ Iowa
W vs. Indiana

That's good enough to be a 'solid NIT' team. Therefore, a bubble NCAA team.

Ok.

We'll see.

Could be a good 1st round match-up in the NIT for Bradley then. Northwestern at Bradley. And Depaul at Illinois.

7-9 Big Ten play, the 8-9 comes from their late non-con against Texas-Pan Am.

I don't think 7-9 in the B10 this years warrants NCAA at-large consideration. But they will still be a solid pick for the NIT.

Northwestern is a terrible basketball team devoid of any real talent. They'll finish in the cellar in the Big Ten, and will not be in the postseason. Book it.

I'm also in the camp that Northwestern is too good. Predictions of NU wins over Iowa, Minn and PSU on the road? Hell no!

NU will be VERY fortunate to finish around .500 this season. Vandy will absolutely take NU to the cleaners.

I guess I just disagree. Won't be the first or last time. While they haven't been flashy, they have been doing exactly what the Princeton system is designed to do: Give inferior teams an opportunity to win every game. Carmody finally has guys who will buy into it. Every roster he's had to this point has had key players who simply can't figure it out or get frustrated by it's lethargy.

It is a bold prediction, but I will stand by it.

I like Northwestern, and like Bill Carmody, but they're a bad team. While their system allows them to hang with undisciplined teams (DePaul and Miami), it allows dreadful teams like North Florida (0-8, RPI 308) and DIII Wheaton College to come within a basket of winning. Northwestern will be lucky to finish out of the cellar in the Big 10.

The worst team in the state with the worst offense, talent, and defense in the state just beat Utah 77-44 to finish 2-1 in San Juan and improve to 8-3 on the year. The Wildcats should head into Big Ten play 10-3.

This team is young, but the confidence is starting to grow.

I am glad for your team Squirrel. 2-1 in San Juan (actually 1-1 for RPI purposes) is just what you predicted.

But you are stuck on 'names' from BCS conferences. Utah is not very good this year. They aren't like the Utah teams from 5 or so years ago.

But like I said - I am happy for your team. I hope they continue to do well. Maybe NW'rn at an MVC school in the NIT would be a good matchup.

Really I thought Depaul was in the Big East? :D

Utah is bad, but they have been competitve against probable postseason teams WaSU, Utah St, and UCF.

Ok, let me clear myself up first.

I need to clarify what I meant by you being stuck on 'big names'. (IMO, Utah is not BCS.) So I was referring to the 'name recognition'. I make mention of you being stuck on 'names' from BCS because you liked the fact SIU got a shot at beating Minnesota in their holiday tourney instead of winning their first game and playing in the winners bracket against Marist.

So now to Utah being competitive against probable postseason teams...

Utah St? OK - They are possible. Though they really haven't beaten anybody, they currently have the lowest RPI in the WAC.

Washington St? I am not entirely impressed with their 10-1 record. A win against Gonzaga and a loss at Utah along with a win over UAB and a bunch of nobodies. I don't call them probable - but possible, yes.

UCF? You have GOT to be joking - Possible only if they win their conference tourney, but not probable.

You are like the 'drive-by media'.

Probable: 1) supported by evidence strong enough to establish presumption but not proof, 2) likely to be or become true or real

Possible: 1) being within the limits of ability, capacity, or realization, 2) being something that may or may not occur

Worst team in the state? Probably a dogfight between Eastern and Western. Chicago State might have had a chance to make some noise in the Mid-Con had they not pulled out of the league. Talk is that they're looking to get into the Horizon League, but I can't see that happening anytime soon.

Virginia and Utah may turn out to be two of the flakiest teams in the nation. Just as puzzling as Northwestern has been. Utah drops 94 on UVa, then can only manage 44 against NU? Virginia wastes a nice season-opening win against highly touted Arizona, then proceeds to lose two games by double digits in San Juan, while struggling to beat the host school in the 7th place game! I thought Davidson might win the Southern Conference in a near walkover, but perhaps Appalachian State has served notice with their title in Puerto Rico. Nice win for the Mountaineers.

DePaul has now won 5 of their last 6 and has a respectable RPI of 76.
They also have played very well over their past 10 games, going 7-3 with three close losses to Kentucky, Purdue, and UAB - all Top 50 RPI's.
They have a better RPI than 8 other Big East teams, and are really only one or two good wins from being one of the best 3-4 RPI's in the Big East.
They may not turn out to be "bad" as so many people said when Bradley played them and beat them.
