  • How Good Is Wofford?

Noticed in today's paper Wofford is only a 4 point underdog to Georgia, at Georgia tonight...

How good is Wofford? Or, how bad is Georgia?

Wofford is good enough to be afraid of. Consider this from CBS Sports website:

--"The Terriers return their big three from a year ago. That includes Noah Dahlman, arguably the preseason player of the year, who averaged 17.8 points and 6.4 rebounds a game last year. His game turned into something else during conference play, when he averaged 19 points a game.

There's also Salters, who overcame a gluteus muscle injury to average 15 points and 3.7 points per game. Opponents found the slashing Salters one of the toughest in the league to guard.

And then there's forward Tim Johnson, the often overlooked part of the trio. The 6-foot-6 forward came out of nowhere to average a league-best 8.7 rebounds per game while scoring 10 points per game.

The combination has the Terriers (and those opposing coaches) again thinking Wofford could be the team to beat in the South Division."

It's a combination of both. Georgia is expected to finish last in the SEC, and they're under a new coach in what is considered to be the beginning of a few rebuilding years.

-Wofford brings back it's top 6 scorers from a team that finished 16-14, and 12-8 in conference last year.

-Noah Dahlman (6'6" forward) was the leading scorer in the Southern Conference with 17.8 points (and 6.4 rebounds) This is pretty prolific considering he started only 10 of 29 games last year.

-Junior Salters is a quick 6'1" senior guard who is described as the toughest player to defend in the conference. He averaged 15 points last year while getting 3.7 rebounds and dishing out 2 assists.

-Tim Johnson is a 6'5" junior forward, who averaged 10 points and almost 9 rebounds last year.

-Wofford's other 3 starters / impact players are guards. Brad Loesing, a 6'0" sophomore, Cameron Rundles, a 6'1" junior, and Corey Godzinski, a 6'8" senior (matchup problems?)

-Cameron Rundles and Jamar Diggs are both transfers in their first year of eligibility at Wofford (Rundles from Montana, Diggs from Wayne State.) They were both named the Newcomers of the Year in their former conferences. Both players also played AAU ball with leading scorer Noah Dahlman, which helps the team chemistry immediately.

-Last game, Wofford started 4 guards and a 6'6" forward and had some success against Pitt. I would say the key to the game would be to shut down Dahlman. He seems to be very good on the offensive glass and gets a lot of putbacks. Hopefully with Taylor Brown back we can have a better rebounding game, and there should be no reason why we can't dominate the boards and get some inside scoring against a team starting 4 guards and a 6'6" big man.
This is just the tip of the iceberg...

Here is a review of Wofford for those that didn't see it-

Dahlman, Salters, and Loesing are their better shooters, and account for most of their offense.

Wofford will beat Georgia. They should have beaten Pitt.

I really think this is going to be a hard fought game. I am REALLY hoping we can get the crowd going, because from what I can tell, most of the general population thinks this is another cupcake. And we will need a lively crowd for the players to feed off of in a difficult game.

A quiet 6500 bunch of people, and we lose this game.

The crowds will keep dwindling until we give them something to go out and see. It's a tough economy right now, and an awful home non-conference slate and a middle-of-the-pack team isn't going to inspire the casual fan to go out. Us hardcore folks will be there come h-ll or high water, but the casual fan with the family is what sells the place out. Sunday evening games only make that worse, as those are usually reserved for unwinding before starting the work week.

Ok, there's my rant on the schedule with an added jab about finishing in the middle since 2001. I'll stop now. Basically I am still peeved about Dodie's injury and our inexplicable injury luck going back to '97, so I am having a hard time looking at anything positively right now regarding this season. Please do not use me as a barometer! Stay positive!

I'll be there. Missed the last one, but not this one. I promise to be loud, provided the post-wedding reception hangover isn't too fierce.

Wofford is the ideal 5th wheel on a non-conference tournament format.

                            Be careful.
