Wichita State's head coach Gregg Marshall being investigated for abusive conduct

This is nothing new. Gregg Marshall has a long and well known history of abusive behavior, both verbal and physical. It is a wonder it has taken this long for people at Wichita State to pull their heads out of the sand, admit it, and deal with it. But then winning has always been the only real priority there.

I am probably not alone in that I have personally witnessed some pretty vile and threatening verbal attacks by Marshall directed at his players, officials, and others, including his own athletic director and team personnel.
However, I expect this so-called self "investigation" to whitewash the whole thing. They have been looking the other way and making excuses for him for at least a decade.

The Wichita State fans are already out on the social media pages and message boards attacking the writer of the article and the people Marshall abused and making excuses for him. We've seen all this before with Bobby Knight.
There are some in this Twitter thread and a lot more elsewhere & on message boards-

Poor man’s Bobby Knight. The behavior we’ve all seen of Greg Marshall and his lovely wife make me glad they aren’t around us anymore.

Column that I recommend reading by Pete Thamel, a long time Sports Illustrated college sports writer, and now with Yahoo Sports-
After enabling and ignoring Gregg Marshall's antics, Wichita State deserves this mess
https://sports.yahoo.com/wichita-sta...215337831.html

And another good article by Gary Parrish of CBSSports-

Though I am glad to see national sportswriters shine light on Marshall's abusive and sociopathic behavior, I can't help but wonder why it's taken so long. This didn't just start. Marshall has always been this way, though winning and a bigger salary seems to have made it worse. I used to sit behind the visitor's bench at Carver Arena in the first few years that Marshall took over at Wichita State (I now sit behind the home bench). And I have sat near the Wichita State bench a few times in St. Louis at past MVC Tournament games. There have been many times that I have witnessed the types of behaviors that are now being described, and there are plenty of other fans who have, too. And if he behaves like that in public, I suspect he is even more abusive in private practices. Now we have multiple former players coming forward with stories about him, which is a very difficult thing for players to do.

Here is a video of the incident described in the article where Gregg Marshall went berserk and was kicked out of a lousy exhibition game in Canada. It appears that if he had not been restrained by his assistants, his players, and numerous other personnel at the game, he would have physically attacked the officials.

I don’t know whether to laugh my ass off because of how much trouble Marshall should be in or feel sorry for all of the ex players and coaches that he had abused over the years. Saw another article from Jeff Goodman at a site called watchstadium.com that is shocking, no pun intended, in how detailed his abuse was and that there were only 2 out of 36 former coaches and players, center Shaq Morris and guard Ty Taylor, would go on the record about what happened. I had always admired his teams for their talent and for how they played. Multiple players said it wasn’t because of his coaching but it was their mutual hatred of him that bonded them into the teams that I enjoyed watching. He should be fired but until the Koch brothers decide they no longer want him as their head coach he’ll be growling on their sidelines.

They say you can’t judge a book by it’s cover, but sometimes a turd looks like a turd.

Wow! That article is pretty damning. I don't know how he's going to get out of this one. Sounds like most of the guys that have played for him certainly don't have any love for him.

I think firing him would be the best choice for Wichita State. These allegations are extremely serious and any one of them crosses the line and is grounds for dismissal. And there are numerous such allegations that appear to be corroborated. This kind of stuff never goes away, and will haunt them if he stays there. It could affect his ability to recruit. That being said, I still wouldn't be surprised if they give him a slap on the wrist, and allow him to stay. The fact that he was not suspended, as would be the normal action for a university to take while the investigation is being done, and he is continuing to get paid tells me that the Wichita State administration is afraid to do anything that might make him mad.

As I mentioned above, I witnessed an incident a few years ago when the Wichita State AD walked down to the bench to calm Marshall down during an MVC Tournament game when he got heated at officials. When Marshall saw him coming, he screamed at the AD to "get the f**k out of here". Instead of taking charge, the AD turned around and scurried away like a dog with its tail between its legs. It showed clearly who the big shot at Wichita State was.

I agree, he has done too much for their program, they would have gotten rid of him sooner if they actually cared about his behavior. It isn't like this is a big secret, we have all seen how he has acted. I think they will make him to go to "anger management' training or something and call it good. I think the damage is done now that it is national news though. A coach should know better than to physically assault members of his own team. Who would want to go play for a guy like that? I think having all those scholarship players transfer out speaks for itself.

Very interesting article from the home town newspaper. Wouldn't have expected any different from Marshall or that Wichita will let him coach during the investigation. I'll be curious to see how long this investigation lasts and if any more players, especially if it's Van Fleet, Baker and Shamet, will go public. Gotta believe this will be a big distraction this season. I'm sure Marshall will answer each question about it with grace and dignity. :-P

I believe he will have a hard time recruiting. The opposing coaches will use it against him as well as prospective players learning about it

I think as long as they keeping paying well, they'll find players that are more than willing to come.

Wichita State hasn’t suspended Gregg Marshall, and some faculty want to know why

Apparently, the Wichita State administrators have dealt with complaints about Gregg Marshall's abusive behavior multiple times over the past few years, and knew about these latest complaints for months and kept them secret until the website The Athletic broke the story 10 days ago.

It is a very interesting article that I recommend reading. Here are a few paragraphs-

Jeff Hayton, assistant professor of history and a member of the WSU Faculty Senate, said by not suspending Marshall during the investigation WSU is sending two messages: “it doesn’t take allegations of physical abuse seriously” and “it doesn’t take the well-being of its students seriously.”
“And both of these messages point to a dereliction of duty towards those entrusted in our care and a complete bankruptcy of morality,” Hayton continued. “The fact that WSU won’t take a principled stand against physical and verbal abuse is yet another black mark on this institution’s reputation.”
“If a professor was credibly accused of assaulting a student during class, would that professor be allowed back into the classroom while the allegation was being investigated,” Hayton said. “No, ... university policies are fairly clear on this.
“Physical assault is an action that can get a tenured professor fired and should lead to a criminal referral. The standard should be no different with our sports coaches, regardless of how big their salaries are. By not suspending Marshall during the investigation, WSU is telling everyone that it is just going through the motions.”

Wichita State is copping out and refusing to answer these concerns with an unnamed university spokesman saying-
“Suspension of university employees is a personnel decision,” the statement says. “The university does not comment on personnel matters in accordance with state and federal privacy laws.”

The Gregg Marshall story isn't fading away like Wichita State would like. It seems only to be getting more coverage, and today, another article in The Athletic (a subscription sports website) reveals that his abusive and vulgar behavior predates his time at Wichita State. Some of his former players at Winthrop University dating back as far as 20 years ago report some of the same type of behavior that has gotten him in trouble at Wichita State.

It has been nearly a month since the story broke about Gregg Marshall's history of verbal and physical abuse of players. And multiple ex-players at Wichita State as well as his former school Wofford have come forward with their stories that document a long history of abusive behavior. And it's been nearly a month since Wichita State hired an outside law firm to do an investigation. But there has still not been any announcement or decision made. Does that seem a bit strange? The law firm doing the investigation has had plenty of time to track down players and interview them, so the longer this drags on, it seems more and more like they are hoping to sweep it under the rug.

Today, this ad appeared in the Wichita Eagle newspaper. It contains the names of over 100 season ticket holders and supporters who staunchly back Marshall. It does not include a single name of any former players who played for him. Nor does it include the name of the biggest benefactor, Charles Koch, for whom their arena is named.

Meanwhile, Marshall is not suspended, he's still working and getting paid, and some people want to know why-

So obviously, the fans and most donors support Marshall and want the story to go away. But Wichita State still needs to make a decision, and it's not clear why it's taking this long. Oddly, the local newspaper, the Wichita Eagle, is not doing much investigating or asking questions.
Their articles seem mostly geared at defending Marshall-
WSU coach Gregg Marshall defends coaching style as school investigates alleged abuse

In new statement, Gregg Marshall vehemently denies ever striking a player or coach
https://www.kansas.com/sports/colleg...246434710.html

So far, the only meaningful investigation by journalists has come from national sports reports about the abuse from The Athletic and Stadium .
Meanwhile, practices are under way, and the season starts in 3 weeks.

No big surprise as long as the BB team is winning the fans are happy so of course they are supporting Marshall. This will only become a story if the money stops flowing in to pay for his salary.
