They did well to advance to the Final Four in the NIT. But their fans' disappointment with their 3rd-place tie and one-and-done blowout loss exit from the MVC Tournament seems justified.
The 3 most promising returning players from last year's team, sophomores Chase Walker, Johnny Kinziger, and freshman Jack Daugherty, all took giant steps backward this year. All three averaged fewer points and fewer rebounds and they shot significantly worse percentages than they did last season. The hype that got them the votes to be picked #1 in the preseason poll were based almost entirely on the expectations that those three key returnees would show improvement this year, which didn't happen.

Their other young returning player, Ty Pence, performed about the same this year as last. His scoring increased slightly, but shooting percentages didn't.

In fact, if not for better than expected performances from two freshmen Tyreek Coleman (3rd leading scorer) and Mason Klabo, and from Boden Skunberg, the 5th-year transfer who was injured last year (4th leading scorer), they would have finished much lower in the final standings.
