What Happens After the Portal Closes

Curious, what happens to all the players that didnt get picked up before the portal closes. Can schools still make offers for them? Or are the S@&t out of luck?

The entry into the portal ends today, so anyone not entered already, either has a commitment at their current school and are staying, or are coming from HS/JUCO/elsewhere and received an offer already. For those that entered the portal and haven't received an offer yet, they just have to keep waiting it out, and have until early November (Start of the season) to receive an offer. Its a risk, they may not receive any good offers, drop to D2, D3, Juco, sit out a year, etc.

entry into the portal closes, but players can still contact schools and vice versa.... the guys in the portal have two choices...

1- pick a school to play at that has a roster spot offered to you - it could be the same school you just left or any other - DI,
DII, DII, juco, NAIA or Europe
2- stay uncommitted and you will not play in 2026-27.

The National Association of Basketball Coaches wants the NCAA to hurry up and make some kind of decision regarding the "5 years of eligibility in 5 years" proposal. Their biggest concern is that in the midst of a recruiting cycle, coaches need to know which players qualify for an extra year of eligibility so they don't use up all their scholarships and have players suddenly coming back who don't have scholarships.

Decision coming soon...

everyone is admitting it would be total chaos if 1000 players who believe their eligibility is over
(guys like AJ Smith, Alec Huibregtse, Meta, etc..)
suddenly became available to seek one more year and grab more NIL... the bidding wars would be insane and the teams
(like Bradley) who have already filled most or all their scholarships would be slighted....so I'm thinking it wouldn't kick in until 2027.

It would be awful if they started it immediately, but lawsuits will begin regardless.
