2017-18 Coaching carousel

a former Northern Iowa player and assistant coach was just named head coach of the Toronto Raptors. - LINK

Interesting. The Raptors had a very good season last year. They were 59-23 under Dwane Casey, by far the best record in franchise history, and easily the best record in the NBA Eastern Conference. Only the Houston Rockets in the Western Conference had a better record. Casey has had 5 winning seasons in a row, while the franchise had only had a total of 4 winning seasons in their entire 18 year history before that. He was named the 2018 National Basketball Coaches Association Coach of the Year, yet he got fired on May 11, right after the Raptors were eliminated in the 2nd round of the playoffs by Cleveland. On Monday, June 11, he was hired as the new head coach of the Detroit Pistons.

Nick Nurse, who was an assistant under Casey for the last 5 seasons, is the new head coach of the Raptors. He played for UNI from 1985-1989. But UNI did not join the MVC until 1991, so he never played in the MVC, and has never played against Bradley.

ISU's Dan Muller has reportedly just hired Chris Duhon to fill the open assistant slot on his staff

Here are the recent headlines on Chris Duhon.....waiting for Kirk Wessler to write a story about ISU's renegade program...
2015 - Chris Duhon arrested for DUI after he passes out in the driver's seat - LINK
2016 - arrested for AGGRAVATED DUI and suspended from his assistant coaching job - LINK
2016 - Duhon swears he has cleaned up his life and it won't happen again - LINK
2017 - Chris Duhon resigns his job as assistant after the 3rd time he had gotten arrested for driving while his license was suspended for his prior DUI's - LINK

He doesn't seem to mind having players who break laws and spend much of their time in court, so why is it any surprise he'd hire a coach who has the same character issues.

Muller's players spend so much time in jail it pays to have a coach on the "inside." As an added bonus no more trips to the jail to bail his players out.

doubt many will recall him, but a native Peorian was just hired at Lamar University
as Associate Athletic Director & Chief Financial Officer...

Chicago State is one of four schools that has still not named a new coach yet after firing Tracy Dildy on March 12 (Delaware State, Maryland Eastern Shore, and Texas Southern are the other three).
But here is something I am not sure I've ever seen before-
https://twitter.com/VerbalCommits/status/1011055662024060928

It appears a 2018 recruit, 5'9" junior college point guard named Darrell Riley, Jr. of Williston State College just committed to Chicago State tonight. He played 1 season at Mississippi Valley State in 2016-17 and averaged 9.0 ppg as a freshman there, then played his sophomore season at Williston State where he averaged 15.4 ppg and 5.1 assists per game.

He seems like a decent recruit for Chicago State. But, how does a recruit commit to a college that doesn't even have a head coach? And unless I missed it, they never named an interim head coach either. I've never seen a school land a new recruit when they didn't even have a head coach. So who is doing the recruiting, and what recruit would commit to a school when he doesn't even know who the coach will be?
Just one more bizarre happening at Chicago State. I wonder if they have secretly decided on a new head coach, but are waiting to announce it? There has been a case or two in the past where a school had to wait until after July 1st to see what their budget would be before announcing the hiring of a new coach.
There have been unconfirmed rumors that assistant coach Matt Raidbard may get the job, but other basketball people in Chicago thinks that is unlikely for reasons that may be apparent-

Chicago State's other assistant coach is former Creighton player James Farr, but so far, there have been no rumors that he will get the job.

BTW, I came across this article from a year ago. Chicago State was actually considering adding football as a sport by fall of 2018! This was an interview with the Interim Athletic Director Tracy Dildy (who was also the basketball coach) saying they were considering football. However, Dildy was fired in March after a 3-29 season (1-29 vs. D1).

They did just hire former Chicago Bear Chris Zorich as their new Athletic Director, but with all the financial problems they have, I still don't think football is going to happen.

Texas Southern didn't waste any time replacing Mike Davis. I always admire ADs who skip the prolonged search process, refuse to hire those search firms who always recommend the same recycled names, and who avoid the committees that never get the job done well. As noted, just a few days after Davis left to take the Detroit job, Texas Southern announces they have hired Nevada assistant coach Johnny Jones as their new head coach-

He has been head coach before at North Texas and LSU-

3 head coaching jobs still open

Jones' head coaching record isn't half bad. Now, to skew it by going 0-13 in the non-con portion of the schedule, all on the road, for big fat checks, followed up by an NCAA appearance. He'd probably be able to coach anywhere. Instead, he goes to Texas Southern. It would be interesting to know what the TSU AD offered him in order to take him from Nevada (maybe a 25% cut from those big fat checks?).

interesting story
..a low level high school coach, who got fired in 2017 after somewhat of a scandal centering on a Nigerian star player who was the #1 rated recruit in the Class of 2019......
suddenly, despite no college experience, is hired as an assistant coach at Western Kentucky under Rick Stansbury. And this coach just happens to be the guardian for the 2019 stud, who just happens to commit to Western Kentucky! Imagine that coincidence...

Western Kentucky will pay this minimally experienced assistant $200,000 per year - LINK
