Do you think they will hire an assistant this year, Or wait till next season. I thought maybe they would just have a grad assistant this year to get by till next season.

There won't be a true outside hire made. Perhaps JC or someone else close with JL or the program will help out, but I think we need a significant hire and shouldn't be distracted during the season trying to find the guy. Heck...the new AD was an assistant for a year, maybe he'll help out. :D

I bet they wait. We will have a few holes to fill and the best guys to hire are usually available after the season. I'd personally like someone that can recruit out east. I would bet we have Chicago covered as best as we can and the northeast regardless of what some may say here has the most talent. Take a look at the talent from DC to Boston. We also have a pretty good assistant in Coach Brooks that deserves mentioning for a top role in the program.

I would like to get a top notch coach from the Chicago area as we are not getting top notch talent from Chicago, Ill.St.,
siu and Ill. all have asst. coaches that have recruiting ties to Chicago, Coach Brooks is from the south and I also believe he does a good job recruiting across the country but we still need someone out of Chicago because there are so many good players in that area.

I would like an asst that can communicate with the youngsters in recruiting like Howard @ illinois and also have in game coaching experience to help JL during the game(adjustments)

you will be surprised...

you will be surprised...

Asst, jump ship all the time, just maybe not during middle of season. JL may have gotten 500 resumes sent to him by now

LC I think we need to move and move fast. I still like the idea of hiring Jeff Wilkins. He could coach the big men and he wcould probably help us recruit a couple of people we may want . I think he would have good connections. Its happened before why not us.Still would love to know what the story is with SM.

The problem with waiting until the season is over is the 25% loss in recruiting exposure until then, and there seem to be locals that might be able to help bridge that gap...

I do like the idea of hiring a Big Man that played in the post as the Big's coach though! Would love to have Big Bish take back the job until someone is hired by the radio show with Snell would be a problem!

I completely agree on Wilkins. But if he doesnt or we dont then we must go into Chicago and get a coach from that area with ties to anyone and everyone Chicago... Donald Reese comes to mind.

But Jeff Wilkins is the smartest move out there.

I am very surprised with a game last night and all the inside connections here that no one knows or is willing to give the truth to why Merfeld is no longer with the BU staff.

For what it's worth, I think Merf's replacement is already here. Didn't anyone else notice Kyle Vogt was coaching on the bench last night, and sat right next to JL. I expect he will fill the assistant slot for the rest of the season.

I did notice that and I also noticed that Mike Peplow, who has been with the program for like 4 years I think, was doing the checking in with the scorers table about subs and what not. I know he is a student but he is experienced and I wouldn't be surprised if we didn't make a hire during the season and just let him continue doing that while Vogt fills the assistant slot and provides suggestions to Les.

I think Jeff Wilkins is an over the road trucker. I would assume as soon as he finishes his present trip (the trucker term is "drops his load") he could be available.

Seriously, what coaching experience does he bring? I think there are better options out there.

He did play at as a professional in Europe for quite a long time and he is one of the top 5 players to have ever played at ISU. But since when does coaching experience have anything to do with hiring a coach who has two potential program changing sons? Lots of programs have made less experienced hires.

My suggestion on Wilkins is loosely based on coaching and more on securing players. Thanks for reading between lines there fan.

I wonder if Merfeld leaving has anything to do with the new AD? The timing just seems odd and coincidental.

I think the NCAA would frown on us hiring Jeff Wilkins, unfortunately. I don't think they'd have a problem with us hiring Taylor Brown's father though.
