BIG Men Analysis - David Collins Must Play More!!!

And I still cannot fathom the out-of-nowwhere now playing of Austin (and now maybe the not really playing of Austin). Did he or Jimmy have an epiphany? And jeez, going from 0 miuntes to quality playing time, the coaches should not jerk him or complain when he sets a bad screen, makes a bad foul, or pass here and there. Going from "0 to 60" is bad enough on a car, but an athlete ;-)

Not sure what you mean by this. The last five games have seen Austin on the floor for a total of 21 minutes.

I am nout sure what you are not sure about understanding. The point was:
out-of-nowwhere now playing of Austin (and now maybe the not really playing of Austin).

He went from more-or-less not playing (13 mins. in the previous 9 games) to playing 10 mins. in the heart of the NIU game to playing just 5 in the MSU game, to 1 in the WSU game. And the 0 to 60 crack was a lame, smart-aleck crack on my part ;-)

We have so many problems much larger than DC. No pun intended.

He is a decent mid major back-up center.

He is by no means a game changer or for that matter a season changer.

What we need right now is for Les to slow the game down, and start running ball screens designed to get guards to the basket. We don't shoot free throws. We don't get forwards scoring going to the basket. We shoot threes off motion plays that are designed to move the ball farther from the basket. We are struggling and seemingly moving to lower percentage shots. Ruffin or no Ruffin this will only be righted by going to the basket.

I think we need to speed things up. A half court game without a low post presence is going lead to us getting destroyed. Slowing the game down is usually done by teams that defend well and are tenacious but are limited offensively. Until we care enough to defend (if you heard Les' post game comments) running a fast break offense at least until Ruffin gets back and gets into top form will allow Warren better opportunities, Crouch could get more open looks, Wilson to use his athleticism and ability to penetrate, and DC and Egolf would be able to run and have the chance to crate mismatches if the other teams bigs are not as athletic. Sam M would be under a lot of pressure, and this kind of offense works best if the team gets a lot of turnovers. Which we don't. But in any case I think that if we slow things down we will lose a lot more games like tonight where 15-18 point deficits seem like 50 point deficits. But I could be wrong. I am still pretty ticked about the game.

I guess I just don't consider 10 minutes surrounded by games of 2, 3, 5, and 1 minute to be considered "quality playing time".

Dallas, I like your statistical breakdown, but after last night, I think that if we use RA with MS we will get the same results. I think we should still play DC but have DC coming off the bench as he seemed lost last night.

The only reason TCS is getting playing time is to give the guards a rest. When Ruff comes back TCS will not see the floor much.

Numbers. numbers, numbers-this seems to be something that a lot of you like to look at but they are very flawed numbers. 1st off the more you play the more likely that your numbers are going to go down so, as far as I am concerned, these numbers you guys keep talking about are very flawed. In your system we should look at Lavin & Phillips numbers as they may even be more spectacular at they haven't played very many minutes and have had a few baskets, rebounds and assists so maybe we should take their totals into consideration also and w/ your point system they may be the best players on the team. My point is the numbers look good but the longer you play the more those numbers are going to go down. If you want to show me real numbers then show me how many points a guy allowed because they were out position, or how many turnovers that a player caused because they didn't catch the ball that was thrown to them or how about the rebounds that were taken out of their hands before they got rid of the ball or how many balls the player threw away because of a weak pass.
I could go on and on about these kind of numbers but the real issue isn't those numbers but what the player does when he is in the game and, has been posted before, we have players and one in partuclar that many question why he doesn't play. If you had the numbers to the stats that I psoted above I believe it wouldn't take long to see why. DC has very weak hands, plays out of position and has many of his rebounds taken out of his hands when he brings the ball down to throw a pass and often when he does get the pass off it is very weak and gets intercepted. I could go on about why he isn't in the game but if you are watching the same game I am it would not take long to realize the answer to your own question. As was posted by several others DC is soft and until that changes you will not see him play a lot

Sure statistics can be misused, but most well-managed sports team keep them to analyze them in meaningful ways. I am curious as to who keeps and runs the analysis on BU's stats.

With DC, there have been enough games with a decent distribution of his time played to draw fairly reliable indicators.

What do you think of this statistic? Team record is 0-6 since David has been benched?

The team is 0 and 6 since Ruff got hurt.

No. They are 1-6 since Ruff got hurt. Ruff played hurt for the Wright State game. He played a lot of minutes (36), but at a much lower level (1-5 shooting, 5 assists, 5 turnovers). That was also the last game DC played meaningful minutes (17). David went 3-4 from the field and had seven rebounds. The result. BU beat Wright State on the road, the only team to have defeated Butler this year.

I'm not sure what numbers you're talking about, but why would you include anyone that has seen 5-6 minutes over 15 games? Obviously, any "numbers" are going to come down over time, but I don't think DC's scoring/rebounding average would be less than 6 and 6 if you doubled his minutes.

Not trying to get anything started and I would agree w/ you on his numbers but my main issue is how many points would he have allowed w/ bad, out of position defense along w/ the turnovers caused, either directly or indirectly, by bad hands. If he had the hands and could play just a little psoitional defense he would be playing the minutes that you really think he should. MS would be seeing a lot less time.
