Bradley will still likely have a lot of their talent returning next year- depending on whether some guys get drafted high enough or get a good enough offer to play pro ball...

if everyone who can return, does, then the biggest losses are..
leadoff hitter (BA .313) & SS Tyler Leffler, starter Cam Roegner (7-3), LHP Brent Stong (ERA 2.65), 1B Paul Solka (BA .299), OF Brady Wilkin (BA .250), and relief pitcher Drew Peters.
P Matt Dennis & 3B Spencer Gaa are the top players likely to get drafted as juniors but can return if the offer they get is not acceptable.
 
The Valley's only NCAA baseball representative Dallas Baptist (a 2-seed) is STILL ALIVE!!

They have beaten New Mexico and top seed Texas Tech in successive elimination games, and now they play today at 3pm for the Regional Championship - and the right to advance to the Super-Regional vs. East Carolina (a 3-seed)

Cam Roegner (1st Team) and Spencer Gaa (2nd Team) are named All MVC!!
 
Day 1 of the Major League Baseball draft involved only Rounds 1 & 2 (and supplemental rounds)
Day 2 involved Rounds 3-10
...so 316 players have been drafted thus far - 244 are college players (incl. juco) - roughly half being pitchers!


Saturday will conclude as Day 3 of the draft involves Rounds 11-40

No Bradley players have been chosen yet but a three MVC players have in the first 10 rounds...
Missouri State's Sam Perez was chosen in the 5th Round by the Marlins
Dallas Baptist's David Martinelli was chosen in the 6th round by the Phillies
Wichita's Sam Ewes was chosen in the 8th Round by the Cardinals
 
I am happy our baseball has improved but time to get to the next level....
we just saw (see above) what midmajors CAN do!

last 8 seasons....Bradley has made the post-season once...had a winning season only twice, only ONCE has reached .500 in the MVC that's weaker now compared to a decade or two ago, especially with Creighton gone.
..never higher than 3rd in an 8-team league, despite having good talent - even national leaders in offense...

Are we to expect this as the new norm....?
There was once a day that if we weren't competing for championships we cleaned house...
Now, if we even get within earshot of 3rd place it's declared a monumental success....seems like a few people are aiming pretty low...
I would prefer to see us aim to win the MVC and stay in solid competition for the league title well into the season...that has not happened in a long, long time...
and our staff is the 2nd highest paid in the MVC -

Winning or competing for championships was once the standard used to fire basketball coaches who had far better records and better success (5 straight winning seasons in a tougher MVC) than what we've had in baseball.

8 year cumulative record....Overall 192-223 (.463).... MVC 52-115 (.311)

Again, if any other coach won just 31% of their games in a weakened MVC, I don't think we would even be talking about this going into year 9.

But they have had their 2 best seasons these last 2 years, so as long as we can see further improvement, I do not expect we'll see a change made.

2012 27-27 8-13 7th (later revised to 6th when Wichita State's 30 wins were vacated by the NCAA)

2015 36-21 10-11 3rd (first winning season, still had losing MVC record)

IMO, the baseball team will continue to improve. They have been getting local talent, which everyone always wants the Braves to recruit in every sport. Like everyone else I have been disappointed for several seasons. But now I'm pretty optimistic for the next few seasons. GO BRAVES.
 
There has been a change in the Bradley Baseball coaching staff

Larry Scully promoted to Recruiting Coordinator/Pitching Coach....he is the single piece that has made the difference the past two years.
Despite still mostly being under .500 and finishing 3rd or lower - clearly Bradley Baseball has done better the past two seasons compared to the prior SIX..

that difference is pitching coach Larry Scully - great guy & great pitching coach ... he will be a head coach some day - deserves it!!

Just a heads up because our baseball staff has a really fine pitching coach and a guy who might well be getting calls from bigger & better programs...

Bradley baseball starts this season in a couple days with some games in Corpus Christi Friday thru Sunday.
I hear everyone is healthy and we're dealing with very few injuries...so hopefully the Baseball Braves can have a great season.

But I just wanted to talk about the pitching coach and lead recruiting coordinator Larry Scully and what he's done for the Braves.

Flash back to 2014 - the Braves went 5-16 in the MVC (and were coming off a 2-19 season in 2013!)
and had the absolute worst pitching stats in the MVC - and not only that -
they were dead last in pitching stats the previous FOUR years as well

At that time, the position of pitching coach opened up and Larry Scully was hired....but he came in late spring 2014 - way, way too late to do a thing or help with bringing in pitching talent since the recruiting class for 2014-15 was already signed...

But, just working with those same guys who were dead last in 2014 -they improved LIGHT YEARS in 2015, finished among the top teams in the MVC in pitching stats and helped carry Bradley to their first NCAA appearance since 1968!!

But now Larry could help scout and recruit the next class as well & he continued to work with the guys we had and guess what...

Bingo - after his first FULL year as pitching coach, suddenly Bradley is SOLIDLY IN FIRST PLACE in pitching stats.

Between 2015-2016, THREE Braves pitchers went in the MLB Draft - Cam Roegner, Elliott Ashbeck & Matt Dennis
..prior to Larry Scully being hired, only three were drafted going all the way back to 2008! So, in just a year of working with our guys, Larry has as much on his resume in that regard as the staff for the 6-7 years before him! (Dewey had 10 pitchers drafted in the 8 years before that)

I am impressed - great hire and making a huge difference
