Chicago Simeon vs. Morgan Park - erupts in violence & fatal shooting

tornado

This is incredibly sad...
two top basketball programs - a huge game between the two teams in the gym at Chicago State University...

and yet the fans get into a brawl that spills outside where thugs with guns start shooting people and a young man - first reported to be 20-years old, then later a 17-year old, was killed.

dozens of security personnel and police were inside the gym - some armed...
prepared for what happened there - but sadly there were few patrols outside as the thugs simply spread out there.

Simeon won the game - 53-51 and the Trib writer who was obviously unaware of all the violaence outside the gym said this...
"A fight broke out between the teams following the game, but it was broken up quickly."

regardless of what was said...
I applaud the security people in the gym for settling things down & clearing the players quickly...

This is so sad. It's a shame when two storied programs can't play a game without something like this happening. What is it going to take for these things to stop happening in our HS program. Manual & Central had an incident in there last game. These schools are going to be playing with no one in the gym if this doesn't stop.

.

There's a real simple remedy for all this but no one would dare chose this route. End HS basketball for these schools. Is the life of a human worth the violence that is caused due to these games. The games act as a platform for these thugs. They could also just set up a sniper or two outside of the arena to shoot anyone who even pulls out a gun. I'd be for that as well.:-o

the players would be free agents and go to the highest bidder - then the violence just shifts to a different school...

There are solutions but not the ones the governments want to pursue...

"@DaveReynolds2: Bradley coaches Geno Ford and Ronald Coleman were at Simeon-Morgan Park game. I'll post my story on it later tonight."

Which makes me sick about what Obama did yesterday!

Oh, did I say that?!

T - Please do share! I'm a libertarian and these thugs do impinge on our freedoms so I'm all for ideas which will result in their elimination.

If they are to play these games then they need to have a no gun zone and if you get caught then you suffer the consequences.

Not sure this was serious, but these games give kids an opportunity for a free education, teach character and at the very least keep them off the streets away from the thugs. Suggesting you penalize one group because another can't behave is not right.

On a separate note, at least no one had an automatic military rifle designed by the most powerful nation on earth to kill as many people as possible.

I agree to a certain point but if these games attract the wrong element and the state is not willing to add the security measures necessary for the general public's safety tell me what else can you do? I'd have to say the life of even one individual is greater then any game you play. Perhaps we should be concentrating on their education and not so much on their athletic prowess. I'm sure there are not to many thugs hanging outside of any "It's Academic Quiz Show" events, which can also teach character and keep them off the streets. Its a matter of changing our culture I'd have to believe to what we had in the past or bring in more fire power then the thugs. The silly middle ground is not working.

T - Please do share! ...

I have shared - but it boils down to an extremely simply philosophy..

don't go after the legal and law abiding people when crimes occur...

GO AFTER the bad guys -punish them severely enough that it has an impact...
in nations where the penalties for violating the law are swift & severe they do not have these crimes, shooting, rapes, etc....they simply do not have the scale of these crimes that we have.

In my lifetime - every change that has been made in the legal, judicial, and punitive area has favored the crooks - soft sentencing, free legal defense, incredibly restrictive rules that allow even a Casey Anthony or an OJ Simpson to go free.

..and stop helping all the 2-parent families fall apart with all the social and welfare giveaways...and promoting the government as knowing best when it comes to kids' upbringing...
It's easy to see that almost every one of these shooting from Chicago to Newtown are young men from broken homes and troubled backgrounds.

..one last thing - I posted a link a couple weeks ago - but there are numerous people who predicted this exact situation - writing as far back as the 60's, 70's, 80's ..
who saw the moral decline, the decline of families & faith, and the government's misguided steps to assure criminals have more & more rights..
as the kindling for the raging fires we see in society now... virtually every state & every city that has gun violence and murders as problems - already have the strongest gun laws, so that doesn't work.
While every state with low crime rates have few if any gun laws....it isn't the gun laws that make a difference - it is - to sum it up - the decline of families and morals that have been enabled and encouraged by government-types and "activists" to whom they appear beholden.

I'm going out on a limb here and assume that these schools are already "no gun" zones. Clearly, criminals have no regard for the rules, which is exactly why more gun laws won't stop behavior like this.

T - I agree with you. I believe any violent crime needs to be dealt with quickly and decisively. I know police officers here in SF that are fed up with the judicial system. Criminals learn quickly on how to work the system. If a criminal is caught with dope or his gun alone chances of them getting off is fairly good. What they do then is have young kids act as their dope runners so they never have both things at the same time. If the off hand they have both then the officers can bring in the feds who will prosecute these thugs.

Chicago appears to have really become a war zone. Citizens are already sacrificing personal freedoms so why not declare a national emergency in certain sectors so perhaps there can be some hope for the next generation.

Ditto here. That's why I posted my sarcastic remark about what Obama did the other day. First of all, 23 executive orders to ram his gun restrictions across (I know Congress has to legally debate this, but still). I think that is slightly unconstitutional first and foremost, which surprises me that someone hasn't introduced an impeachment charge on this guy!

Regardless though, my second and far more important point echoes what others have stated. Every gun law in the world will not reduce gun violence, PERIOD! We have to go after the criminals in the harshest manner possible, and start reintroducing (within ourselves) morals and values that will prevent people from going off the deep end over a lost job or a breakup! There's other factors to be looked at as well, but that's the main issue right now.

I just can't fathom the lack of regard for human life. How people can be so indifferent, I'll never understand. If we're all indeed born innocent, how the decency can be sucked of a person to such an extent is inexplicable.

Chicago simeon vs Morgan Park

Chicago simeon vs Morgan Park

t--- You are 1000% correct. Illinois is the only state that does not allow concealed carry and Chicago has some of the strictest gun laws in the USA. And yet, Chicago had over 500 murders last year and may very well exceed that this year.
The problem in America is not a gun problem---Its a violence problem and it is really two distinct problems---First is shootings by thugs---Mostly thug on thug, also in robberies and drug-related incidents, and sometimes in anger where innocent bystanders are sometimes shot ( The Simeon-Morgan Park thing was apparently one of these).
The second problem involves mass killings by disturbed "nuts" whose only purpose is to kill a large number of people and then very often, themselves. Newtown and Colorado typify these.
IMO, we need to recognize and understand these two distinct violence problems before we can effectively deal with them. Simply banning guns, adding more gun control laws, or attacking the Second Amendment will not solve these violence problems---Chicago and Connecticut both with strict gun laws have not been able to prevent terrible violence.

Wizard I agree with you as well 1000%.... I've heard ex-criminals say that you can do what you want with gun control but criminals will always be able to walk down the street and find a gun if they want to. Why take the guns away from law abiding citizens. It will just give the thugs an advantage. Let's face it, guns are part of the American fabric and culture let alone a Constitutional Right! We need to approach this violence differently then what a European country would. To me its simple. If you engage in any felony with a gun you're automatically put in front of a special federal crime unit for swift judgement. Forget about the state/city governments that are to weak or in the pockets of those liberals who cannot get out of their own way on these issues. This is about freedom!
