Coaching carousel begins

Ernie Kent to DePaul makes sense, he's somewhat local (Rockford) and has a record of success (although not much recently). Although I wonder if they'd be better served hiring a young, hungry, up-and-comer like Brian Gregory who's also local (Prospect Heights native), has BCS experience (assistant at Michigan St), and has had a high degree of recent success building a program (Dayton).

The thought on Gregory is as long as he's safe at Dayton, a move up that isn't to a stable program and not Michigan State isn't likely because he might risk losing the respect he needs to be a lock succeeding Michigan State.

I'd suspect that Izzo is not leaving MSU for quite some time.

I see squirrel's point, but I have to agree with SFP here. I don't know if Izzo is going to be leaving anytime soon.

I saw Squirrle's point of view also but waiting for Izzo to jump ship would be like waiting for Coach K to leave Duke. Could happen but chances are real slim.

I also had two big qualifiers in there.

1) as long as he's safe at Dayton
2) he won't move up to a program that isn't stable, if a gig opens up that has won and one could easily still win

My point wasn't that he wouldn't ever leave Dayton waiting around for MSU to open, but rather that he can be selective about when and where. But make no mistake, that is the ultimate prize in his lens.

He may have done all he can at Dayton and if the money is a lot better I think he moves on to a bigger school.

His coaching roots are in the midwest. He can come to BU to be an assistant.

Although a former fellow assistant of his at Illinois happens to coach right down I-74...;)

This some sort of joke?

All of his coaching experience, no way he'd sit behind Les, and certainly not behind LiL Buesch....

You mean like Merfield:confused:

I guess you have a point...and Merf did at least make an NCAA appearance (w/ a victory)...

BUT Merf was pretty well scr*w*d by where he took the Evansville program and had to settle for the BU position he got...

Although do you guys realize how sad our assistant coaching is...

When you look up our coaching staff on Wikipedia you get this...

Buescher - BUSCH Nascar Racing

Vogt - Justin TV

Brooks - Stratford Town Council of Connecticut

And here is a surprising report- after Iowa was eliminated with a loss to Michigan in the Big Ten Tournament tonight, rumors began to spread that Coach Todd Lickliter might be done at Iowa.--

Lickliter could be out after 10-22 record-

There has not been any official announcement. Lickliter has 4 years left on his contract.

One of Iowa's 2010 commits is former Bradley recruit Ben Brust.

Interesting...how can he be held accountable as his first recruiting class are all still freshmen and redshirts?
He had been at Toledo less than two years!

Gene Cross (an ex-Illini player) came into Toledo almost exactly two years ago after Stan Joplin was dismissed..
He was said to have incredibly strong ties to Chicago, would recruit Chicago well, and with his prior experience as assistant at UIC, DePaul, and Notre Dame, that Cross would take little time in rebuilding Toledo into a decent midmajor..
He was named to the list of "Ten Assistants Ready For the Next Step" by CBSsportsline.com in 2007 and also named one of the top 25 recruiters in college basketball by Rivals.com in 2005.

I even recall debating someone two years ago, that Bradley should have gotten Cross or someone just like him with tons of coaching experience, Chicago savvy and connections, and a recruiting prowess that even helped land Luke Harangody at Notre Dame!
So Cross took over a team that had won an average of 17 games per year over the three years preceding (and that wasn't enough for Joplin to be retained) and Joplin had averaged 20 wins per year over his prior 8 years.

And even with some solid players like Tyrone Kent & Malcolm Griffin Cross led Toledo to 7-25, then 4-28!

This leads to a real great discussion that some have had about assistants like himself and Judson that do a wonderful job as just that, but just don't cut it as a head man...Norm Roberts comes to mind as well...

Either these guys just aren't that great at running the ship, or they picked the wrong assistants and wrong situation...

Thoughts?
