Coaching Carousel

another unexpected firing...

IU Indy head coach Paul Corsaro was fired yesterday.

IU Indy is formerly IUPUI, and they hired Corsaro a year ago from DII Univ of Indianapolis where he was highly successful.
In his first year at IU Indy he posted a decent gain in a program that had been miserable for years, winning only an average
of 5.8 games per season of the prior five seasons.

However, four players transferred out and complained that they were treated poorly and subjected to abuse, which was defined as
intimidation, bullying and instilling fear.... dirty jokes, foul language, etc...
A couple more that transferred out (apparently smelling a settlement) joined in.... players he inherited from a horrible team that he did not recruit.
Specific details are slim but NOTHING even comes close to what we read about Gregg Marshall or Bobby Knight.
I guess it hints that kids nowadays are soft - they want to be treated like kings and given playing time without earning it.

One more note- a few years ago when Valpo was added to the MVC, IUPUI was one of the schools that was given consideration
of adding to the MVC. - LINK

With the sudden and unexpected firing of the IU Indy head coach, one of their players has entered the transfer portal. The portal is closed to ordinary transfers, but still open to players at programs where a coaching change occurs.
6'6" freshman Keenan Garner, who Bradley offered out of Fishers, Indiana HS entered the portal today-

As freshman, Garner started about half their games, and played 20 minutes per game. He averaged 5.3 points and 4.8 rebounds. Would Bradley be interested? I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up in the MVC.

IU Indy hires Division II head coach Ben Howlett from West Liberty University (W.Va.) to take over their basketball program.
Howlett replaces Paul Corsaro, who was fired May 13 for what the university said was his treatment of players during his only season with the Jaguars.
Howlett was 217-37 at West Liberty with eight straight Mountain East Conference regular-season titles and eight straight NCAA Tournament appearances. His 2023 team reached the Division II championship game. They averaged 100.2 points per game this past season and finished 30-5.

Keenan Garner signs with Central Michigan as part of their rebuild - they have 13 new players signed this spring.

Here's an unusual story - and there are rumors that there's more lurking beneath the surface....

The top assistant coach (actually, Associate Head Coach) at Stony Brook University, under head coach Geno Ford, Dan Rickard,
just "stepped down" and is taking a position as "athletic director" at a nearby high school. (a pretty massive step down)
The Stony Brook School is a private Christian High School with enrollment of 455.

This is a very odd time for a coach to suddenly depart, and there's rumors that barring a great season in 2025-26 (after an 8-24 season in 2024-25, Geno's 6th season there), the rest of the coaching staff will be gone by end of this coming season.
After 2023-24, Geno signed an extension through 2025-26, (at a little over $400K), so he's apparently on the last year of his contract.
Geno's DI head coaching record is 200-225. Former Bradley assistant Jaden Uken is now Geno's top assistant.

Stony Brook didn't waste any time removing Dan Ricard's page from their website-

Dan Rickard - Associate Head Coach - Staff Directory-

Dan Rickard is a Stony Brook alum who played for them from 2002-2004, then became a grad assistant, followed by various coaching positions under Geno Ford and previous coaches Jeff Boals and Steve Pikell going back more than 20 years. -
He has been Associate Head Coach since 2022-

It is a strange story.

ISU just hired a new assistant on their staff, Ethan Morton, former Purdue & Colorado State guard,
becomes their new Basketball Director of Operations

Notice how they photoshopped his Colorado State photo

Wofford just fired their head basketball coach Dwight Perry & top assistant Tysor Anderson.
Extremely unusual timing with the season start imminent.... he was just beginning his 4th season at Wofford.
Smacks of some behavioral or rules violation issues.

Check these comments by a Wofford fan - Shivers up my spine recalling how we felt exactly the same a decade ago-

...edit - here's more on the Wofford situation...unofficial reports of...
rumors - unfounded at this time - of several hundred thousands of dollars of Athletics Dept funds were inappropriately spent on benefits for athletes.(some reports that the AD
..allegedly ........."Wofford coach ... paying for townhomes for players to have a place to live"
Some reports that the AD Scott Kull was aware...

edit - another of Wofford's assistant coaches, Drew Gibson, has been named Interim Head Coach

one more note-
We don't hear much about Wofford, but since 2010, they have averaged 20 wins per season, and have gone to the NCAA Tourney SIX TIMES! No Valley team even comes close to those kind of numbers.

Yup
All confirmed, and now….
SIX Wofford players penalized and ineligible for accepting the freebie townhouse living quarters &/or free meals as an impermissible benefit.
There are concerns the team may not be able to field a roster sufficient to be able to play their schedule.

Meanwhile big schools like Texas, their players are driving Ferraris

The story isn't over yet at Wofford. Now there are reports that at least 12 of the 15 players on the roster have consulted an attorney and are saying they will transfer if the fired coaches (Head Coach Dwight Perry and Asst. Coach Tysor Anderson) are not reinstated.

Wofford says they will NOT rehire Perry & Anderson and it is being reported they will hire as new head coach,
an assistant from Virginia Tech & a former player at Wofford who helped them secure two NCAA bids, and also was
a former Wofford assistant from 2013-2019, 35 year old Kevin Giltner
.
So let's see what the next moves by the players are. I think this is what schools have to do, even if it means a total rebuild.
You cannot let the players squeeze the school & the program and demand their own way. Let's see how many keep
their word and transfer. There are still some schools with open roster spots, but if 12 players all transfer at once,
many won't find a good DI spot for 2025-26.
Currently there are still ~800 players in the transfer portal that haven't found a place to play in 2025-26.

The fall semester started weeks ago, and it is too late now to transfer, enroll, and be eligible for this semester at most other schools. So I don't see many of the Wofford players doing that.

Bruce Pearl is retiring, his son is taking over on an interim basis for the season
Yes, I just saw that report. Looks like he waited until the season started so Auburn did not have a chance to replace him, and his son would become head coach.
