Coaching Carousel

I will be surprised if a top P-5 assistant would take the NIU job
They will look hard at DII guys
If you look at the recent success of bringing perennial successful lower level coaches in, that should be something they strongly consider.

another P-5 coaching position just opened up along with Kansas State & Providence (and borderline P-5 Oregon State)-
Georgia Tech just fired Damon Stoudamire...

You see lots more schools now firing their coaches before the season ends, or immediately after it ends, so they can try to get ahead of the crowd and start contacting coaches' agents. Just a few years ago, that was rare.

BC just fired Earl Grant. Jim Molinari was one of his assistants. Jim is 71.
Too bad for Jim. It means another move for him, but that is the life of 99% of college basketball coaches. Jim has enough connections and is widely respected as a smart defensive coach, that if he wants to keep coaching, I believe he will get other offers as an assistant somewhere.

Jim's family is spread out (IL, MI, AZ), but he has a new grandchild in Arizona, so would he look for a position out west?

Arizona State fires Bobby Hurley

funny- the guy NIU fired a couple years ago (Mark Montgomery) - took a 1-31 Detroit Mercy team and
in just two years, he's turned the program completely around & is playing for the Horizon League Championship tonight
against Alex Huibregtse's old team Wright State. Maybe NIU was a little too hasty in firing Montgomery?
His numbers weren't all that bad. In fact in 2020, just one year before they fired him, he finished first in the MAC West Division.

Oregon State is said to be hiring Michigan Assistant Justin Joyner

Syracuse has fired Red Autrey
Autry was fired after only 3 seasons, and the entire Syracuse staff was fired along with him.

Other coaches fired today-
Jeremy Ballard- Florida International- https://fiusports.com/news/2026/3/1...ces-change-in-mens-basketball-leadership.aspx
Bobby Hurley- Arizona State- https://www.espn.com/mens-college-b...izona-state-renew-contract-coach-bobby-hurley
Arizona State got blasted today in the 2nd round of the Big 12 Tournament to Iowa State 91-42.

List of firings (does not include the 3 above as of the time of posting)-

Casey Alexander is going to K State
A bit surprised. If there was ever a “lifer” coach that would stay at his Alma mater, I figured it would be Casey Alexander. K State is an interesting job. They just fired someone who made the elite 8 what 3 years ago? Always second fiddle to KU.
