ISU's Deontae Hawkins suspended

yeah- during the recruitment period - when Akoon-Purcell (who was going by just Devaughn Purcell at that time) then got convicted of a violent felony in Florida - everyone else who was recruiting him dropped off ....
and so ISU had a lock on him. It wasn't a "recruiting coup" as some had claimed - it was a matter of ISU needing talent fast & badly enough to take the risks..

Ya gotta give Muller some credit - he' sticking to his word...
he said there'd be nothing more to say about all the arrests and they've stuck to that line..

another local basketball team in the news for all the wrong reasons
..one of ICC's best players arrested for possession and intent to deliver drugs...
kinda sad....blowing a scholarship...

I notice the discussion on the ISU message boards has turned to attacking the MVC's other message boards for noticing all the arrests at ISU :roll:

There's more to the criminal meltdown over at ISU...
DJ Clayton - ... will have another hearing on Nov. 1

Milik Yarbrough - ...further hearing Nov. 1....

both were read their charges and the formalities then scheduled for separate further hearings in December. (neither date seems to conflict with their basketball schedule)

ISU plays an exhibition game Sunday against Quincy University.
Deonte Hawkins, who was suspended indefinitely after his arrest for DUI and other violations, will not play.

But D.J. Clayton, who was also suspended after his arrest on an underage drinking violation and possessing stolen goods, apparently has had his suspension lifted already without missing any games. He will play Sunday in the exhibition against Quincy.

This is exactly as I predicted...."handling it internally" = sham discipline. I predict Hawkins will be reinstated before their next game.

Well, "suspended" definitely means something different over there in Bloomington than it means everywhere else - no player of any significance ever misses even a practice let alone a game....and kids with DUI & drug arrests weren't suspended at all on numerous occasions -

does it surprise anyone...they'd let them play even if wearing ankle monitors...

An interesting comment from one of the ISU Redbird fans on their message board about Deontae Hawkins

"I'm not sure what Hawkins is suspended from. He's been working with the team during morning workouts/practice.
So, is Muller telling the public that he is suspended to try and help some image restoration for the school? Who knows.
Sad stuff that this keeps happening ......."

... something else odd about Deontae Hawkins
His status on the ISU roster has been recently changed from "Junior" to "Senior"
http://www.goredbirds.com/roster.aspx?path=mbball

He was listed last year as "Sophomore" - LINK...
ISU writer Jim Benson seems to confirm our observations--
he says Hawkins is a senior and this is his last season, so he must have fallen behind academically and lost the chance to regain his redshirted freshman year.

one other ISU note- their center Daouda N-Diaye has another stress fracture in his foot and in out indefinitely - one other mention said maybe 6-8 weeks.
He missed much of last season with a stress fracture of the foot as well.

Based on Muller's history of soft discipline, my money is on this suspension somehow being lifted by ISU's first game Nov. 11 at Murray State.

Those are expulsion level offenses at almost any college (except ISU) especially for a kid with prior discipline, suspension, and legal issues. But this seems like Muller's best shot at making the NCAA so I expect this to get swept under the rug and I agree with da coach that he will be deemed to have been punished enough by missing their exhibition game and he'll be back for their first real game.

Looks like Muller is setting things up for Hawkins to play in ISU's first game this Friday at Murray State, just as predicted.

If he does, and I expect he will, he will not end up missing a single minute of play in any real game despite this being his second suspension, and this time involved a DUI, a citation for driving on a suspended license, and an open liquor carry violation.

This is a very bad look for the MVC ...

ISU ended up losing the game to Murray State 73-70. So Muller's phony "suspensions" did not end up helping him.

Deontae Hawkins was said to be "suspended" after his arrest for multiple charges, including DUI, driving on a suspended license, and transporting an open liquor container. Yet his faux "suspension" apparently was lifted before he missed a single game or practice, and he ended up playing a game-high 37 minutes in tonight's game. And the other sham-suspended player, D.J. Clayton, played 25 minutes, more than double the playing time than anyone else off the ISU bench, and way more than all the other reserves combined.
I am not surprised, as I did predict with precise accuracy that this suspension was a sham, and that Hawkins would start and play as usual. It would be expecting too much to see the sycophantic Pantagraph writers call him out on sham suspensions, and expect some real discipline for all the the lawbreakers on his roster and the numerous arrests and legal issues. Apparently, they need to rape a child before Muller actually enforces any discipline, and even then, as in the Bobby Hill case, he reluctantly acted only when there was an actual guilty plea.

it's become the trend that discipline is totally dependent on talent level..
Tyler Brown was one of their stars so even an aggressive battery arrest didn't cost him any time but Darious Clark who was arrested at the same time, in the same incident for the same charges was a goner.
Bryant Allen was arrested for simple possession and was a goner, and yet Brandon Sampay had a DUI and fake ID arrests yet played in every game
But then Iowa kinda has the same rules - their stud Peter Jok has had multiple DUIs and even served a jail sentence when caught again driving while his license was suspended and yet hasn't missed a minute of playing time.

some good news for Hawkins & ISU, they got the court date pushed back two months..time to rack up some playing time...
Javaka Thompson got two years added to his court supervision and owes almost $3K in fines - surprised Muller would still hold on to a walk-on that's only logged a single minute so far, esp. with two violations..
