It Just Not Right

Here's what's not right this year:!: First the tournament in Alaska is canceled, then we lose AW, next we lose to a D3 Wisconsin Platteville, then we lose to UMKC, then we lose WE, next we lose SS, next the saga of JW starts, then after the non conf. schedule people start writing the team off and start the, wait tell next year, then we win the first 4 conf. games with 2 road wins and people think (MAYBE), then the lost to Creighton on our home court, next the lost at NIU in the worst officiated game maybe ever with the mother of all fouls called, then its official JW will not play this year, then the lost at ISU with the rim call and THEN the raining of 3's in the last minute lost to NIU. All this with losts to 3 ranked teams (Florida, MSU, and at home to Butler.) Then when you think we lost three conf. games by a total of 12 points (2 to NIU, ISU) and then another by 6 (SIU). Thats four conf. lost's by a total of 18 points and 3 of those lost's were on the road. It's just B___ S___:!::evil:
IT JUST NOT RIGHT:!::evil:
How the hell can we give up on this young and over achieving group of no fear players. We have a fifth year player thats broke about every bone in his body to play for us. We have a coach thats never gave up on this team and has given them the game plans to put them in a position to win each game.
I think the Basketball Gods owe this team something:!: Something BIG:!:

Good rant, I agree.

For future reference if refering to The University of Northern Iowa by abbreviated letters it is UNI.

NIU is the abbreviation for Northern Illinois University.

That's why in another thread I said we are 13-10 and so close to being 19-4...even 20-3

just depressing...completely agree...

except the whole the basketball gods thing owe us something big...that came in 2006 and we're still paying the price

not to mention the late 80's and early 50's...what would I know about that though

it certainly seems like this team could easily be at least in the 17-6 or 18-5 area. bad breaks are just all we've seen this season. but then i suppose thats just how it goes. nothing can be done about it.

You forgot to add the crazy conference schedule we were issued with no ISU for the students..

Sounds like a lot of excuses.....

Wait those aren't excuses they're explanations.....;)

I'll take the opposite side here and say that I think this team and coaching staff has over-achieved this year and surpassed all expectations after losing three of the top players from last year (Ruff, JC, & Salley) and after losing this year's top returning scorer (AW) and this year's potential "break-out" player (WE). How many mid-majors in the country would be as successful as our Braves have been under these circumstances?

I'm proud of the job they've done so far and look forward to following them in one of the postseason tournaments :) :)

B4L, you are right. If I recall, we were picked 5th assuming a healthy AW and WE (although his expectations weren't very high coming into the season). I bet we would have been picked closer to 7th or 8th if it had been known before the season that AW would miss the whole year. If we were picked 7th or 8th in the pre-season, I think we'd all be jumping out of our seats to be battling for 2nd.

Another problem is in year 7 JL does not have a clear methodology on the court.

I give him credit for making the changes necessary due to personnel changes, year to year, and even in-season--albeit too late usually for my tastes as in a given year there are too many games we lose that we shouldn't.

But it's hard to build continuity when you change what you do from year to year.

Follow me here. . .

2006, 2007, and 2009 we have had completely different ways of playing. And they are probably his best coaching efforts to date. That is a good thing.

But what is frustrating is we have played this way this year out of necessity. We get two players back from injuries next year. Are we going to have a different style next year? Or are we going to try and revert to '07-08?

We probably won't be able to run the DDM quite the same without Wilson, as Warren is likely to have more of a perimeter oriented game, and Egolf probably doesn't match that athleticism.

But what this does is it makes things a little more complicated on the recruiting trail--players want to see what it is you run, so they see where they fit in. Changing every year sends mixed signals.

Furthermore, it forces you to bring in players that may or may not fit in with what you are trying to do in the future.

And that affects continuity.

Sorry buddy, but there is winning and losing.

If you win, it means you are good enough.
If you lose, it means you are not good enough.

Simply put, we're just not good enough.

I think that anyone who is recruited by us will pretty much know that we intend to play an up-tempo style of play and that injuries have affected coaching decisions about how we play this year. It isn't as if we have been locked into a defensive style of play over the years that could limit the type of player who may want to come here..... IMO being a coach at this level requires a huge level of salesmanship... I would be more worried about what competing coaches say to recruits... At the same time, JL can more than handle things on the recruiting front.....

I agree !

I think Jl is doing a very good job recruiting to anyones standards. He has recruited and gotten more local recruits than we have in the past. JM refused to recruit local players.

The main reason our game has changed in 2007 & 2008 was do to injuries in part, but I feel the bigger reason is because P.O.B. left early.

The fact that P.O.B. unexpectedly left early was devastating to B.U. Not only did it mean we had less wins than we would of, it also would probably have helped our recruiting.

We very well could have been in the top 25 both of those years with possible M.V.C. titles, M.V.C. tourney wins, & N.C.A.A. bids which would have helped recruiting.

It is absouletely wrong that JM refused to recruit local players, I know for a fact he tried hard to get the local talent.

Would you have prefered we lost to Kansas and POB stayed?

What are the expectations for the fourth year removed from the Sweet 16? (which is next season) Personnel losses should not matter, right?

Okay, you know what? What happened happened. We still have a chance for a decent season. We can't harp on this. We have a good shot of winning one or two more road games which will position ourselves nicely for St. Louis and a shot at the NIT at the very least. Still not a bad year considering the injuries and other bad luck. And I agree with most that next year will be the year to see if we make a breakthrough or not.

We can still salvage this year however, and harping on the past won't help. Let's just try to win tomorrow night at Drake and take things from there.

Wait those aren't excuses they're explanations.....;)

None of what I posted and the intent was to show/use as excuses or explanations, but to point to all the unfortunate and unusual event's that have taken place to this team so far this year. No where in it did I use or hint to any of it to be a excuse. Maybe you should go back and reread the post but some thing tells me thats not the trouble here. Maybe you just just don't agree but Facts are Facts! Thats all I was pointing out with a little fun with the BB God Thing. But you probaby did not think that was funny. But I laughed my *** off at your one liners along with all the others on here.;-)

Is it unusual if there's something every year we can point to and say "Golly gee whiz if only this didn't happen?"

I'll give you unfortunate.
