NCAA Tournament

Drake has gone almost 9:00 with no FG's now 2-15 overall, 1-6 from 3 and have 6 turnovers and are losing to the Shockers 16-6 with 7:42 left. The Bulldogs are having a really hard time with how physical Wichita is playing them.

It took them awhile but Drake's offense finally woke up as they outscored Wichita 10-0 in the last 5:00 of the half to be down just 21-20. After starting the first 17:00 4-20 they made 4 of their last 6 shots. Joseph Yesufu, after being scoreless in the first 17:00 made Drake's last 7 points including an emphatic dunk over a Wichita player then made a 3 with a few seconds left in the half. Wichita missed 9 of their last 10 shots. Hemphill in 8 minutes of play had 3 points and 4 rebounds. Overall Drake is 8-26 overall, 2-8 from 3, with 19 rebounds and 6 turnovers while Wichita was 9-32 overall, 1-9 from 3, with 21 rebounds and just 3 turnovers.

Drake went 7:00 without a point, stuck on a number, and is down 34-25 with 11:56 left. Can't remember the last time Drake, who is the #1 offense in the Valley, had only scored this few a points at this point of a game.

Wichita is letting Drake hang around and now the Bulldogs are down just 42-37 with 7:40 left. Drake has made back to back 3's in the last 1 1/2 minutes to close the gap. Tyson Etienne, the co-palyer of the year in the AAC, scored his first point for Wichita with 8:19 left. He's 0-6 on the night.

3:57 left Drake leads for the 1st time since 5-2 as Darnell Brodie's reverse layup gives them a 46-45 lead. They were down 37-25 after Brodie picked up his 4th foul at the 11:22 mark.

WOW! Drake survives and advances to face USC as they beat Wichita State 53-52. The last 5:00 was some good ol NCAA tournament stuff. Darnell Brodie had a really bad game for the 1st 35 minutes on both ends of the court but played great on both ends in the last 5:00 including making a 10 foot turnaround jumper with 1:05 left to give Drake a 51-47 lead. Wichita missed a 3 that Brodie rebounded. Wichita was able to force a turnover, Drake's 12th, and Alterique Gilbert made an acrobatic layup with :28 left to cut the lead to 51-49. Joseph Yesufu made 2 FT's with :22 left to put Drake up 53-49. Drake stole the ball on an inside pass but committed their 13th turnover which the Shockers Dexter Dennis converted into a 3 with 8 seconds left to cut it to 53-52. Yesufu got fouled but missed the front end of a 1 and 1 which Wichita rebounded and gave it Gilbert who quickly brought it up the court and got off a 25 footer that hit the front of the rim and Drake and the Valley rejoiced. Drake had lost their last 11 games games against the Shockers. Believe it or not it was 50 years ago on this day that Drake had won their last NCAA game. For the game Drake shot 20-53 overall, 7-19 from 3. After starting 1-6 in the second half they finished 11-21 overall and after starting the first 28 minutes 2-11 from 3 they finished 5-8. They had 13 assists on their 20 made baskets and outrebounded the Shockers 38-35. Yesufu led Drake with 21 points. Wichita was 19-56 overall, 3-18 from 3 and just 11-22 from the FT line, Drake was 6-10 from their, and had just 7 assists on their 19 made FG's. Morris Udeze made life tough for Brodie as he had 22 points on 8-13 shooting but was 6-11 from the FT line. Tyson Etienne, their leading scorer and co-player of the year in the AAC, had 1 point. When Yesufu missed the FT I was thinking "Oh no not again", as Drake's last NCAA appearance in 2008 ended in heartbreak on a buzzer beater. See ya Shockers!

#11 seed Drake plays #6 seed USC at 3:30 pm on TNT

Drake better hit shots today against USC to have a chance. USC has some tall guys to go against including expected top 5 NBA pick 7 footer Evan Mobley.

Joseph Yesufu is startin on fire for Drake as he's 4-4 from 3 and has 14 of Drake's 18 points. With 10:24 left USC leads 21-18. Their height is giving the rest of the Bulldogs problems on both ends of the court as USC is 10-15 from the field and have 2 blocks and a number of influneced inside shots.

Other guys starting to contribute for Drake including Shanquan Hemphill who has 6 off the bench including putting Drake up for the 1st time at 26-23 on an and 1. Drake up 28-26 with 6:08 left

Drake right in the ball game down 40-37 at the half. Yesufu started the half 6-7 but missed his last 5 shots and has 18 points. Hemphill played the last 16 minutes of the half, which was probably about 6-7 minutes more than he was expected to due to some foul trouble for Drake, who have 3 players with 2 fouls. Drake outrebounded the bigger USC team 19-15 and had just 4 turnovers. Mobley for USC had 13 points, 8 rebounds, 3 blocks and many altered shots. Making FT's will be a key factor in this game as Drake, one of the best, was 6-7 while USC, one of the worst, was just 3-9.

16:00 to go and Drake is looking like they've hit a wall now down 47-40. Yesufu has 21 and is 7-14 overall, 5-8 from 3. The rest of the team is 7-23 overall, 1-4 from 3.

Drake has been outscored 11-3 in the 1st 6:00 of the second half and USC has their biggest lead of 11, 51-40. The Bulldogs are having a really hard time dealing with USC's height.

Drake starting to wake up in the last 2:00 as they've forced 3 straight turnovers and on one possession they grabbed 3 straight offensive rebounds and are now down 51-44 with 11:56 left. Hemphill has not played yet in the 2nd half.

6:53 left and Drake is barely hanging in there down 57-46. They are 3-24 overall this half and have had such a hard time running any kind of offense because of the height of USC. Many shots have been altered because of it. USC has been credited with 5 blocks but I think over 30 of Drake's 56 shots have been altered.

A FT, a turnover and a Yesufu 3 has Drake down 7 with 6:28 left. Yesufu has 26 of Drake's 50 points. Hemphill has still not played this half.
