Last year's stats-
http://www.byucougars.com/uploads/stats/basketball_m/stats.pdf

BYU returns 6 of their top 7 scorers. The 2 key players for BYU are:
Jimmer Fredette, a 6'2" junior guard who scored 24 points in their first exhibition, and averaged 16.2 ppg as a sophomore.

Jonathan Tavernari, a 6'6" senior forward from Brazil. He was the 2nd leading scorer in their first exhibition game with 18 points. He averaged 15.7 ppg as a junior.

Their other 3 starters are-
Charles Abouo, a 6'5" sophomore forward from the Ivory Coast. He averaged 2.9 ppg last year as a freshman.
Chris Miles, a 6'11" senior center from Provo, Utah. He started all 33 games last year and averaged 7.1 ppg.
Jackson Emery, a 6'3" junior guard. He was a starter last year and averaged 7.8 ppg.

If i'm not mistaken, this is game 1 of the MVC/MWC challenge. Go get em!

11/13/09 Bradley at BYU (BYU, 2-1, last met 12/17/77)
11/20/09 Colorado State at Indiana State (tied, 1-1, last met 12/30/81)
11/21/09 Southern Illinois at UNLV (UNLV, 2-1, last met 12/23/83)
12/05/09 Air Force at Missouri State (first meeting)
12/12/09 TCU at Wichita State (WSU, 5-2, last met 12/8/08
12/19/09 Creighton at New Mexico (UNM, 2-1, last met 11/16/08
12/19/09 Illinois State at Utah (first meeting)
12/22/09 San Diego State at Drake (DU, 4-2, last met 11/25/77)
12/23/09 Wyoming at Northern Iowa (UW, 3-0, last met 12/13/08

The way things line up for this year's challenge games, most of the stronger teams in each conference are at home, except Creighton and Illinois State. I would expect the home teams to be favored to win every game, with the chance for maybe one upset. I have to admit, Bradley faces the toughest opponent (BYU favored to win the MWC) and seems like one of the least likely to pull an upset.

Shall we do a pick em for this?

Seems a little unbalanced for the MWC/MVC challenge. The other conferences (ACC/Big10) tend to balance the matchups based on last years order of finish. Maybe this challenge was thrown together quickly and were forced into specific scheduling due to availability.

Also, didn't BYU and BU already have an agreement to play before these conferences decided to matchup?

If it were balanced based on 2008-09, then the matchups would be approximately:

UNI-BYU
CU -Utah
IllSU -UNM
BU-San Diego st.
UE - UNLV
Wichita St - Wyoming
SIU - TCU
Drake/InSt - colorado St.
MS - Air Force

Gonna be a tough one at BYU. It will take a near flawless performance to get a win... tough thing to do Game 1.

On second thought - the only unbalanced games (according to last year's finish) is the UNI - Wyoming and the BU-BYU matchups. That is a 1st vs 6th and a 1st vs 4th.

I'm thinking that we might of been at or near the top of the MVC standings at the time this was announced. Even if it was announced post-season, the matchups may not of been perfect because others had already scheduled matchups (but I do not think we were on of those)...

For some reason BYUTV is down tonight but BYU is slaughtering Central Washington, up 34 to 16 at the half. Central W is just a very baaaad team. Some halftime stats below...

BYU (starters played half of the 1st half)....
45% FG shooting
11% on 3's (1 for 9)
+7 on the boards
-2 on turnovers (8 to 6)

Central Washington...
16% FG shooting :0
16% on 3's (2 for 12)
36% on FT's (4 for 11)

Yeah this will be a tough one indeed, BYU has only lost 3 home games in the last 4 seasons, 2 of those losses were last season. Still gotta play the games though and see what happens.

Don't forget that BYU's exhibition game is online tonight at http://www.byutv.org/streaming/

Well the final results are in and they aren't pretty. BYU slaughtered Central Washington by 36 points (82-46). Stats are below...

BYU (Starters played half the game, 22 minutes or so) ...
50% FG shooting
27% on 3's (5 for 18)
64% FT's (9 for 14)
+12 on the boards
+1 on turnovers (19 to 18)

4 of the 5 starters scored double figures with Fredette leading the way at 15 points, 6 boards and 5 assists.

The starters only committed 7 personal fouls and 8 of the 18 turnovers. Their going to be 1 tough bunch to beat.

------
Central Washington (only 2 starters played over 20 minutes)...
24% FG shooting for 2nd straight game
26% on 3's (6 for 23)
47% FT's (10 for 21)

Jason

interesting...half the minutes were bench minutes, yet the bench scored only 23 of their 82 points....our bench accounted for half our points...
maybe we're a deeper team...

Certainly one game doesn't make a season, but it would be quite the tone setter to go on the road and knock off the MWC's top team. I say we throw the kitchen sink at 'em!
