NIL - Name, Image, Likeness

Dartmouth’s men’s basketball team voted 13-2 to form a union. It’s getting more interesting. I think collective bargaining will eventually be in place for college basketball and football

Yes, if and when NCAA schools split into a Major division and a mid-major division, this might turn out to be the distinction. The top division will treat athletes as professionals/employees, and will rake in big bucks. And there will be a lower division, which would be for the amateurs/non-employees.
I hope these changes don't happen in my lifetime, because it will destroy any interest I have in college sports.

It'll be interesting to see what happens when the feds and states come for their slices. Might make it tougher to recruit to income tax states.

Illinois may be in a little trouble for alleged illegal contact with Wisconsin's A.J. Storr - https://www.outkick.com/sports/aj-storr-wisconsin-transfer-illinois-tampering-allegations

It has been widely reported that Storr was "advertising himself" to other schools for $1 million dollars - https://dailycaller.com/2024/04/18/wisconsin-aj-storr-kansas-transfer-1-million-demand/

Illinois balked at that amount, but apparently Kansas was able to work out a deal. Eventually, Storr committed to Kansas.
The NCAA has said they will comply with court rulings and will not police or enforce any rules regarding NIL. However, they still have a lot of rules, including rules against illegal contact with another school's scholarship athletes.
With NIL money being handed out like candy, players having their own NIL representatives, and the transfer portal, everyone knows this kind of illegal contact is happening all over the country. But, apparently now its become so open and blatant, that the NCAA feels it has to take a stand.

The author of the article from outkick states at the end it's time to control the NIL. I totally agree. It will ruin college sports

Absolutely right. Most people think there needs to be more control, and I suspect this case is the NCAA finally stepping up and acting like they care about the integrity of college sports. In the end, it may all be for show, and IMO its doubtful the NCAA does anything but issue a statement or give a slap on the wrist.
Maybe they will find Illinois guilty, and come down hard and penalize Incarnate Word.

Unless they can show coaches or administration was involved I doubt anything comes of this.

...I see, if it hurts Bradley or Indiana State or the entire MVC- nobody seems to giva***
But, when it hurts Kentucky, Duke, Wisconsin or Illinois, now they gotta step into action and fix this mess...

It all started when they invented the RPI to help more 6th & 7th place power schools get in over deserving mid-majors,
then they had to scramble, ditch the RPI and rig something else when mid-majors started making Final Four runs

Here is an interesting development- A quarterback who was recruited by Florida is now suing the head football coach and a prominent booster because he claims he was promised $14 million in NIL money which never materialized- https://www.nbcnews.com/news/sports...es-florida-coach-billy-napier-fail-rcna153466

I want to say to the big boys. You asked for money to get above everybody else now you have a whole set of new problems. Now you better come up with the money or they are going to come after you...

Listen to Illinois head coach Brad Underwood talk about how he was able to land 5-star recruit Will Riley in late June after he thought his donors had "run out of money" for NIL deals after landing a bunch of other 2024 recruits and transfers who got huge NIL deals. - https://x.com/Recru1t1ng_Guru/status/1807433382009163904

Underwood-
"I thought they (big money donors) had run out of money, but they came up with money for Will Riley. I don't know how how much, but we're talking hundreds of thousands needed.... People came through, and we're not talking about small donors here, we're talking about big time... talking about billionaires".

Must be nice to have billionaire boosters. And Underwood claims he doesn't know how much money the boosters are paying Riley, but that is BS. I am sure he knows exactly what he's getting.

Anyone know any billionaire Bradley boosters we can tap into?
Maybe if a previous administration hadn't pi$$ed off big money donors like the Puterbaugh family, the Markin family, Robert Turner, Brian McGough, and others, we'd have a lot more NIL dough.

I agree with everything, except Markin went thru a divorce and lost 50% of his assets after a 15 year marriage. The couple was building a bigger mansion on the coast of Palm Beach, Florida and never moved into the property. The divorce case was listed as the record for the amount of money awarded for a divorce in Palm Beach, at that time, about 110 million. David was president of the US Tennis Association. It was later reported that he also lost money invested with Bernie Madoff. The tennis courts at Bradley and the Markin Student Recreation Center are named for his contributions. At one time, it was rumored that he was going to donate money for an indoor tennis facility. Maybe he should have had a prenup agreement to the marriage. :)

Molar, that is why I said "Markin family". I was referring to his family after he died, and not David Markin himself. Yes, he was very generous and donated many millions of dollars to his alma mater, Bradley, which he loved, including an $8 million donation for the Markin Recreation Center. Then, just a year after David died in 2013, Joann Glasser and Mike Cross made the decision to drop David's beloved men's tennis program after 93 years. The Markin family (wife and children) were very upset and pleaded with the administration to reverse their decision, but they flatly refused. Bradley has never received another dollar from the Markins.

I find it interesting that the Bradley web page about the Markin Center no longer even mentions David Markin's $8 million gift to help build the facility. - https://www.bradley.edu/campuslife/campusrec/facilities/markin/

One more note-
the Markin donation was not only pledged but also fully given to Bradley and the Markin Center already under construction & fully funded BEFORE Joanne Glasser arrived at Bradley - but that didn’t stop her from repeatedly claiming it was her doing & she took credit for it.
It opened in 2008 but not one penny of the donations or costs of the Markin Center was accomplished by Glasser.
Not saying Glasser didn't bring in some donations, but gotta remember that directly due to her, there were also tens of MILLIONS in donations that were already pledged, but were withdrawn and lost solely due to her (Turner, Puterbaugh, Hersey, McGough, and many more)- which offset virtually all of what she brought in.

She also took credit for the 2008 fundraising campaign that became known as the Campaign for a Bradley Renaissance, and eventually raised $161 million, including a $30 million donation from Caterpillar. However, the $30 million Caterpillar donation, along with much of the remaining total were pledged before she was hired. Previous President, David Broski, was able to secure the Caterpillar donation, and several other large donations before he left in 2007.
