Non-Con schedule "officially" posted

The only reason Bradley is in it is because other tourneys fell through, and 4 games is better than 1 game. Although, if the 2 or so cupcakes me get are harmful.....

I guess I'd rather take the composite of @Syracuse, N-Richmond, N-FGCU, N-Cupcake U vs. trying to fill the spot with a single game.

The games we're getting are too good to pass up.

You get three winnable games as a guarantee and a showcase game against a high-visibility program.

I know the format issue is silly, and it's a trend in college hoops I don't like, but for the short-term anyways, it's the direction these tourneys are headed.

Back to the CCI a couple seasons ago, we could've theoretically lost our two home games before hand, and the semi, and if we were pre-arranged to meet Illinois in the Championship even with losses in all 3 contests as bizarre as it seems, I don't think too many BU fans would complain.

Schools are increasingly holding out on these tournaments for the best guarantees. . .a month ago it didn't look like we would even have these 4 extra games.

This is utterly bizarre. First of all, everywhere I look the organizers claim this is a SIXTEEN-TEAM event. But it's not; it's 16 little insect teams PLUS the 4 grown-ups, making it a TWENTY-TEAM event.

And as much as I love JL, what in the name of God is Bradley University doing in a slimy pond with the likes of FGC UMKC et al so four big toads can pick us off one by one? We're supposed to feel privileged to get ONE shot at a BCS with NO shot at advancing? I'd have thought 3 20-win, post-season seasons would get us a little better than that.

I'll take a home-and-home with Jim Molinari over that kind of nonsense any day of the week.

Oh, I don't have a problem at all with four games. I think this is great that we get four games with a great game against Syracuse. It's just I never heard of a tournament format like this where only four of sixteen teams are eligible to win the tournament! Very strange indeed!

Well, we had no choice when our first tournament fell through and Iowa St postponed our third game with them until next year. It's good we got the four games, but I'm with you brocks. This is a really strange format!

Because it is an exempt tournament, and the two we tried to get into fell through, IMO this is a steal. You also can't replace lost tournament games with fillers, as they are merely extra games the NCAA allows teams to play.

My guess is you can thank Kentucky for losing to Gardner-Webb in a similar event last year.

Seriously though, last year the CBE struggled to get enough teams to fill out the tourney (they had to use 2 non-DIs) because EVERYONE wants the home games and 2 games is not enticing enough when most tourneys offer 3 or 4. . .

The CBE, in order to appease everyone, had to guarantee those 4 the matchups in KC, but also give the next tier programs (like BU) a guaranteed game against those schools, but also extra games. . .

Squirrel hit it right on the nose. Everyone had to be happy w/ this format and the big 4 wanted to be guaranteed to play in KC. The main thing w/a set up like this is they actually get schools at what they consider 4 different levels of play and seed them accordingly. Squirrel are you sure that all of them get 3 games each or is just the top 8 that get to play the 1st round game? What I am asking is do the real bad RPI teams get to play that 1st game when BU does or do they let the 4 big schools play 4 others and then move to the next site where the other 8 schools will join the 4 "play-in" teams to make up a mini tourn. w/i a tourn while the big 4 head to KC for their own tourn.
I do not mean to make this to complex but from what I am seeing so far this is what it looks like will happen but I can't verify that as of yet.

There is no doubt it is a confusing tournament but if we get 4 games out of this then it is a good thing as we need to play as many games as we can before the start of the conference season as we have a lot of new players that need real game experience and playing 3 more games should help us more then 3 more days of practice.

This is like nothing I've ever seen before. . .

Yea, usually they are tiered into four levels, and BU would typically fall into either tier 1 or tier 2 depending on the rest of the field.

In this case, I think they are tier 2.

My best guess (and that's all it is) is that the Fort Myers games are just extras. . .but they may be working on some sort of secondary competition.

Well, think of it this way:

Old system: You win the first game, lose to Syracuse in the 2nd game and you're done for the tournament.

New system: 4 games no matter what, one guarantee game against Syracuse, no title

I really hate the message they're sending with this tournament setup. But in a way, it's better than we get 2 extra games against Richmond-type teams that we wouldn't get otherwise. Of course, if we beat Syracuse, that means we lose 2 MARQUEE games. Which is the part to be furious about.

I know JL and staff did what they could despite a lot of scheduling hardships.
I know that we will get at least one shot at a Florida or 'Cuse type
I know that scheduling for a team in our position is tough

But this schedule is downright bad no matter how we spin it. If this was ANY other teams schedule in the valley we would BLAST it for hurting conference SOS and RPI.

Well, think of getting a buy game (which some of us think is a good thing to do from time to time). Here it is. We get a Buy game at either Florida or Syracuse. Oh, and then we get to play 3 extra (bonus) games on a Neutral floor which are all winnable. Winning games on a Neutral floor are better than winning at home for RPI purposes.
Due to the situation Bradley fell into, I think this is an acceptable deal this season.

But I also agree with the comment.... I don't like the signal being sent by setting up "Tournies" like this. But then again, Squirrel was right about how it had to be set up to be attractive to all involved.

I was just going to ask that same question. Would Bradley get a trophy for winning the "tier 2" portion of this tournament? :)

True, but such is the life for successful mid-majors. However, a schedule like I suggested on the "Non-conference schedule" thread would likely solve some of these problems. Loading up the schedule with like-minded and strong mid-majors who are in the same boat as us would really help the team and conference RPI. I don't know if Les has spoken to teams like St. Joseph's or Western Kentucky, but loading up on teams like that would make us less concerned about having to schedule Florida Gulf Coast type teams every year to fill out our schedule.

That tourney has "winnable" games, I agree . . . but Richmond is a "trap game," potentially. We will be favored, but they will be dangerous. They have a good young coach who has been recruiting rather well. It's funny . . . in the last 4 or 5 years, both UR and BU have beaten Kansas. I'll bet Self wanted NOTHING to do with that region!

Thinking about this more. . .

There would be 16 teams overall. . .

The 4 Tier 1 teams go to KC.

There are 2 groups of 3 Tier 2 teams. . .this would be BU

There are 2 groups of 3 Tier 3 teams. . .

There are two sites (Fort Myers and I've seen nothing on where the other site may be) where the non-KC participants go, and the each of the Tier 2 teams play one game each against the Tier 3 teams. . .

What is interesting is FGCU would likely be Tier 3, but is a nice location in FL that I'm sure the teams had no trouble agreeing to go to.

So only 2 of our 3 games down there are neutral.
