Players leaving/returning

That Sy Chatman has already transferred about 3 times. I had heard one of the knocks on him coming out of high school was that he lacked a good work ethic

As we've posted before, Bradley coaches were once recruiting Sy Chatman, a 2018 recruit, in high school-
https://www.bradleyfans.com/forum/s...8-beyond-recruiting-targets/page33#post458178

But they backed off when Ari Boya was successful in reclassifying from a 2019 recruit to a 2018 recruit. For a kid with his size and athleticism, Chatman had surprisingly few D1 offers out of high school. He ended up committing to UMass quite late in April, 2018. After a somewhat promising freshman year, he only played in 6 games his sophomore year. There is a lot of discussion on the UMass message boards that he was constantly dogging it in games and practice, and did not get along with the coaches, which probably is what lead to his transfer to Illinois State.
From what I have heard from ISU insiders, pretty much the same things happened at ISU this past season. Dan Muller initially declared Chatman would redshirt. But after Keith Fisher opted out, Muller decided he would play. He didn't play at all in several early season games, and ended up only appearing in 5 games. He was left home by coach's decision on a road trip to Evansville in early January, and after that, he decided to "opt out" and not play at all. So now he's looking for another school. The only offer reported so far is lowly McNeese State (RPI 344 out of 347 teams that played).

Interesting Stat from STLToday's Dave Matter:
As of Monday, 30 of the 76 teams from the six major conferences have had at least four players in the portal this year:

4: Auburn, Florida, Texas A&M, Vanderbilt, Rutgers, Wisconsin, Kansas State, Texas, Arizona, Arizona State, Xavier

5: Georgia, Missouri, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Boston College, Miami, Pittsburgh, Iowa State, TCU, Texas Tech, Washington

6: Indiana, Colorado, Utah

7: Minnesota, Penn State, Wake Forest, DePaul

8: St. John’s

Valparaiso's Donovan Clay enters the transfer portal. This is a huge blow to Valpo if he leaves, and I am sure he'll have offers.

Donovan Clay announces he will transfer to Missouri State.

The MVC has had a rule that if a player transfers to another MVC team, there would be an extra 1 year sit-out penalty, unless it was waived by their previous school.
See section 4.2 of these MVC Bylaws titled "4.2 INTRA-CONFERENCE TRANSFER"
http://www.mvc.org/manual/bylaws.pdf

There's no word if a waiver was granted. I don't think the expected NCAA rule waiving the usual NCAA required year sitting out would override conference-specific rules.

2 more Valparaiso players enter the Transfer Portal. These two are a bit surprising- 5'9" junior guard Daniel Sackey and 6'8" senior forward Mileek McMillan. Sackey started 22 of 25 games this season at Valpo, and averaged 5.3 ppg, 3.5 assists/gm, and he shot 14.6% (6-41) from three. McMillan started 13 of 25 games and averaged 3.4 ppg and 1.6 rpg, and 24.5% from three. Last season (2019-20) McMillan started all 34 games, averaged 9 ppg, and was one of their top 3-point shooters....

Daniel Sackey is transferring to New Orleans.

And one other Loyola player is in the transfer portal- Sami Ismail. He was a walkon at Loyola.

Illinois State players Dedric Boyd, Abdou Ndiaye, and Sy Chatman have entered the Transfer Portal, joining Keith Fisher III who had already declared he was leaving.

Followup on ISU players-

Former ISU big man Abdou Ndiaye commits to Cal State Fullerton.

Keith Fisher committed to UTEP, but that was when Rodney Terry was still the UTEP head coach. Now that Terry left to take an assistant coach position at Texas, I wonder if Fisher's commitment will still stand? UTEP is reported to be hiring Abilene Christian's Joe Golding.

Dedric Boyd committed to Tennessee State-

Sy Chatman remains in the transfer portal and has not committed elsewhere yet.

This one really hurts ISU- D.J. Horne, their leading scorer (15.1 ppg) and leading 3-point shooter (42.5%), has placed his name in the transfer portal-

Once NCAA players can make $$$ from marketing themselves, good bye MM and even P5 teams in podunk backwater towns. Players will want to go to schools in bigger cities/markets or with large fan bases of rabid fans so they can make more $$$$$.

Last nail in MM coffin is P5 telling NCAA good bye.

Sad, greedy ending to college sports we grew up with.

Keith Fisher III initially committed to UTEP, but after their coaching change, he switched and has now committed to Pepperdine.

Illinois State players Dedric Boyd, Abdou Ndiaye, and Sy Chatman have entered the Transfer Portal, joining Keith Fisher III who had already declared he was leaving.

There are reports that Sy Chatman, Illinois State forward who placed his name in the transfer portal, is returning to Illinois State.
https://twitter.com/portal_updates/status/1384635207110758400

Chatman was in Dan Muller's doghouse all season and ended up playing in only 5 games. Rumors from insiders are he had poor work ethic and clashed with his coach. The same rumors can be found on the UMass fan message board, which lead to leaving the UMass team early in his sophomore season and ultimately transferring away to ISU.
He spent over a month in the transfer portal. If indeed he is returning, it probably means he found no takers, or that Dan Muller is so desperate for players he is willing to take Chatman back, even though he only played him in 5 games last season for a total of less than 60 minutes of cumulative playing time all season.

A few more MVC players who entered the transfer portal in the last couple days-
Illinois State big man Dusan Mahorcic- a 6'10" junior, he averaged 9.9 ppg (4th on the ISU team) and 7.2 rpg (tops on ISU and 5th in the MVC). He was ISU's only effective big man/inside player. There are serious problems at ISU. 3 of their top 5 scorers have bailed out, and Dan Muller has missed on all his recruits, except a transfer from lowly Tennessee State. And in order to land him, Muller had to hire his prep coach as an assistant.

Loyola's Paxson Wojcik- a 6'4" sophomore, he was recruited as a shooter, but Braden Norris, Lucas Williamson, Keith Clemons, and Marquise Kennedy got nearly all the playing time at guard. Wojcik only played in 15 games and a cumulative total of 93 minutes all season. He averaged 2.5 ppg. And with nearly everyone returning, he doesn't appear to be likely to play much more next season.

Another Loyola guard, Baylor Hebb, a 6'2" freshman guard, is also transferring. He was a deep reserve and didn't get any significant playing time either. He is reportedly transferring to Colorado State.

Indiana State guard Cam Bacote- 6'3" sophomore guard who did not play much and with a change of coaches, he entered the transfer portal. He only averaged 2.7 ppg, but he did shoot 50% from three (9-18 ) on the season. He is transferring to Western Carolina.

Wonder if Paxson Wojcik will end up with his dad at MSU as a walk on? Bradley could definitely use a shooter like him.

I'd like to have Dusan Mahorcic, too. He's a big body who sets very good screens, and can score and rebounds well. But transfers inside the MVC won't likely happen.

Right, there's no rule against it but most players tend to either move up or down when it comes to conference level.

Actually, according to this web page, there appears to be a rule that acts against intra-conference transfers. It requires a waiver granted by the initial school, or the athlete must sit out 2 years.

Here are the BYLAWS OF THE MISSOURI VALLEY CONFERENCE
http://www.mvc.org/manual/bylaws.pdf

Scroll to section 4.2-

4.2 INTRA-CONFERENCE TRANSFER
A student-athlete who has accepted or received an athletic scholarship award at a member institution of the MVC or who has participated in any intercollegiate contest as a member of that institution's team, shall be allowed to transfer to another member institution of the MVC with the following stipulations:
....4.2.1 Participation in Student-Athlete's Sport. The student-athlete may not participate in the particular sport for a two (2)-year period from the official date of transfer.
....4.2.2 Participation in Any Sport. The student-athlete may not participate in any other MVC sport for a one (1)-year period from the official date of transfer.
....4.2.3 4-2-4 Transfer. The intra-conference transfer rule shall apply to a student-athlete who transfers from a Conference member institution to a two-year college and then to a certifying Conference member institution.
....4.2.4 Waiver of Intra-Conference Transfer Rule. Extenuating circumstances may warrant consideration of a waiver of the intraconference transfer rule. Such circumstances might include:
.........4.2.4.1 A student-athlete who is not receiving athletically related aid at one (1) institution but who can transfer to another institution and receive athletically related aid.
.........4.2.4.2 A student-athlete whose athletically related financial aid is eliminated at one (1) institution and who wishes to attend another Conference member institution and receive athletically related financial aid.
....4.2.5 Waiver Procedure. The following procedures shall be employed by member institutions' Directors of Athletics regarding student-athlete intraconference transfer requests:
.........4.2.5.1 All NCAA rules regarding transfer remain in force (i.e. permission to contact, one-year exception restrictions).
.........4.2.5.2 If a student-athlete wishes to pursue an intra-conference transfer, the Director of Athletics, or designee, at the initial institution must inform the student-athlete in writing of the condition or transfer including application or waiver of MVC and/or NCAA transfer rules and, if the intra-conference transfer is not supported, whether the initial institution wishes to have enforced a 2-year or 1-year residency requirement. A copy of the written notice shall be provided to the Conference Office.

Thanks Coach, I thought they had changed that bylaw a year or two ago. I really hate that rule, always have.

I did some searching, and I found that you are right. It appears the intra-conference transfer rule was amended in June, 2014, and the penalty is now sitting out 1 year (see 4.2.3)-
https://s3.amazonaws.com/sidearm.si...r_Regulations_Sports_Other_than_Football_.pdf

4.2.3 Eligibility. Unless a waiver or appeal is granted, a student-athlete who has triggered the application of the intra-conference transfer rule may not compete in any sport at the certifying institution until after that student-athlete has served a one-year residence requirement from the official date of transfer

So I apologize for posting the old rules. But it seems this newer rule may still require the transferring athlete to sit out a year. I guess we'll see in the case of Donovan Clay.
