Post game thread - BU 68 isu 72

I don't claim to see alot of BU ball but watching SM last night, he displayed a tough, bull-dog like energy that will serve him well on defense and being a play maker. I wonder about his development as a future scorer. I don't ever see him being a Ruffin type player.

I don't think SamMan will be the highlight reel playmaker Ruffin is, but then again, that's a pretty tough bar to reach.

I'm not worried about Sam at all. He's shown me enough this year that he's more than capable of taking the reigns from Ruff next season. I was very impressed with how he handled the team in DR's absence.

FYI hes averaging more ppg his true Freshman year than DRuff did his Redshirt Freshman year and is getting about 7 minutes less per game, and is looked at as about the 4th or 5th option, Druff was 2nd or 3rd.

Bert, I dont see Sam as being a Ruffin type of player either. Sam and Ruff are different types of players and both are effective in their own ways.

This also allows us to develop Eddren Mccain next year into what could be a nice 1-2 punch for the future.

Alot of whining on here about a foul call here or there. There was a lot of missed calls on both ends. In the first half we benifited a lot from no over the back calls on offensive rebounds. Also a lot of moving screens. This isn't the reason we lost the game.

I don't see the "whining" you are referring to. Please point to where Bradley fans have whined about calls.

Maybe you are confusing it with the Redbird board, where entire threads are dedicated to whining about officiating--

I have to agree..the game was called OK from what I saw. The ONLY call that sticks out was Slack jumping on RA's back to block Ruffins shot. I wouldn't have even minded the no call had they not then called RA for pushing him off him. Like you said....haven't heard any BU fans complaining about the refs at all.

The way I see it, refs are refs, they are going to call the game how they want to and either way, somebody is going to be upset. Does it make it difficult when it seems like the calls aren't going our way, sure it does. But do we get the calls in other games, absolutely.

In regards to SM, being a Freshman playing it this atmosphere, that is a lot of pressure. He can take that pressure, as he has already proven by picking up the team when Ruffin went down. Yes he looked timid last night, but he is a Freshman, when we play ISU next year, I expect that he will play so much better than he did this year against them. Everyone has off nights, unfortunately he has had them when we played ISU.

Just wondering to this point in the season.... what has been the largest and most intimidating crowd for SM? Was @ Butler worse for a Frosh? Was @ SIU bigger and worse?

I actually didn't have a problem with the Slack play (which happened against TW, I believe). I didn't think him ending up on TW's back created an advantage for Slack. TW was basically there as a screener, and, if anything, it actually gave Ruffin more of a lane along the baseline.

And the subsequent foul by Wilson was more than just a "push off" IMO.

There is a huge difference between those games and rivalry games. Yes SIU is a rival, but can you honestly say that they are a bigger rival than ISU? Your nerves will get to you a little more in those games and now that he has experienced them here and there, he will play so much better. I'm not trying to make excuses for him, but a couple of bad games against ISU, and as you pointed out @SIU and @Butler, are no reason to get upset. He is a freshman and he is experiencing all of this for the first time and he has performed beyond most people's expectations.

Sorry to be weighing in so late on the whole classy vs. unclassy them vs. us thing.

While I wasn't at the game and can only go by whats been accounted here and by my friends who were in attendance...I can say that Bradley fans can be just as vulgar sometimes and that it only takes a few bad apples to make the whole lot seem bad.

First hand example: BU Soccer games. Bradley has kicked the ball out of the opposing teams end zone (don't know the technical term for it) resulting in a goal kick.

Each time the other team's goalie takes that kick the cheerleaders and most of the crowd yell "Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww GO BRAVES" but there are a few "bad apples" that feel the need to yell "Awwwwwwwwwwwwwww YOU SUCK" and even a few more that like to add an "@$$hole" on the end of that.

Just thought I'd mention it for those of us who think Bradley fans can't be just as bad.

At ISU is was the ENTIRE student section and probably 1/4 of the remaining crowd. Not just a few bad apples. I'd say there were "a few good apples" who were respectful and polite.

Inside

Inside

Say what you will about who starts, who doesn't, who gets the minutes, who doesn't, three point records, hostile crowds, vulgar cheers, bitter rivalries, game strategy ... this, and future, BU teams will never get to the next level (NCAA, forget the NIT) until we have some semblance of an inside game. Someone(s) who can FINISH on one end and DEFEND and REBOUND on the other. With the talent we currently have (and will have in the coming years), it doesn't have to be another Patrick O'Bryant. Imagine the year we could be having right now if we only had another Zach Andrews. We control the boards, we win. We don't, we lose. I think the stats bear that out. I don't know whether it's the recruitment or the development process that's failed us this year. But, it's as obvious as the L in the W-L column.

Point

Point

For those of you worrying about next year and the transition from Ruffin to Maniscalco, I have two words of comfort: Les - Manuel. Both great, but different, point guards.

I was at the Butler game, and it was no where near as intense as the ISU games. There student section was actually terribly small, even for break. But at least there school gave them the student section (but thats an entirely different thread). Anyway, I doubt Sam will face such an intense crowd many more times in his career.

Off-point, if your Moser how mad are you now?

Good to see "Phantom's" perspective on Redbirdfan.com

"BU fans are absolutely pissing & moaning to the Nth degree in their postgame thread about our fans, specifically our students. Despite my best efforts over there to explain certain things, they are in full on gripe mode. Good to know Red Alert is really having an effect "

I guess we see a different side to Phantom on our board.

Believe me, I've had decades of experience with ISU fans, who are probably (kindly put) the least knowledgable of basketball fans: the best way to silence them is to ask what ISU has EVER achieved on the national scene in Div. 1 basketball. They will quickly respond: "Doug Collins." Period. Paragraph. End of story.

Yes, please elaborate. Not sure what you mean by this.

Honestly, Watching a few of their games, I don't feel like ISU is well coached, and that it's really just the development of the players there that they are so improved. I also think its the fact that they have played a fairly easy schedule and that some normally good teams are not as good this year. Honestly I feel like Jankovich just fell into the right place at the right time, when his success is much more due to coach Mo than to himself.

EDIT: On my previous post I said coach MO I meant Moser. Very bad mistake, my fault.

Do you mean Porter Moser? I never heard of him referred to as 'Coach Mo'. The only Coach Mo on this board is the one that coached Bradley for 11 seasons.
