Top Draft Prospects - DRuff Listed

tornado

CHN lists their top draft prospects for this season...

They list only one 6-Star prospect - Michael Beasley, and I suspect Beasley WILL be the top draft pick in 2008.

Their love-affair with OJ Mayo continues as they list him as the ONLY 5-Star prospect. I will be flabbergasted if he is the 2nd player drafted next June, but I guess everyone is entitled to their opinion.

I guess I can't argue with their 4-Star and 3-Star prospects, but some pretty unknown and unheralded players in their 2-Star and 1-Star lists, including the guy they have presently listed as
#70-overall........Daniel Ruffin!
(right behind #69-Drew Neitzel!!)

Randall Falker is #90, and no other Valley player is listed.

It's possible that Ruff could make an NBA squad. Yes, he is short, but he is a great point guard and can hit the outside shot. In the NBA, he will have solid players at the other positions so all he needs to be good at is running the point which he can do. It's a matter of hooking up with the right team, which for DR, might be 1 or maybe two where he would have a chance.

I am sorry but there is no way in my mind that Ruffin can make a NBA squad. I love Ruff, but as 5th year senior point guard he still makes way too many mistakes. He gets caught way to many times in the air under the basket and makes way to many to's. Those to's would double in the NBA with all of the quickness that is in the league. Good luck Ruf, you will need it.

You might be right ,but I'm thinking that Ruff would be able to play a much different style (i.e., dial back his need to provide scoring by making things happen) in the NBA because he will be surrounded by much more capable players than he is now. Look at his play two years ago when he had POB and Cellus on the team. If POB had stayed for his senior year and Bradley was a top 15 team, I think DR would be getting lots of attention. That doesn't mean I think he is going to be an impact player in the NBA, but I think he could make a squad. I have watched a lot of point guards come and go through the Mavericks over the last 20 years and trust me, there were several that I would take DR over.

There have been and are players under 6' that play in the NBA and what they have in common are that they are athletic, lighting quick, great handle, not afraid to go inside, great man on man D, can shoot a mid-range jumper and make steals for some instant O. These are all attributes DR has!

Spudd Web, Mugsy Bogues, Michael Adams, Speedy Claxton, Nate Robinson, Damon Stoudamire, Earl Boykins....Why not DR?

You all are kidding aren't you? #70 is in the 3rd. round and there are only 2 Rounds.
In the words of the immortal Sonny Corleone forgedaboutit.
No way Jose does Ruffin play in the NBA.:p

Earl Boykins was a bag boy in a grocery store when he got his chance! All DR has to do is play well during the summer league and you never know who is watching. Realistically your right but I'd give it a 30% chance with a 50-50 chance 3 years from now.

Ruff can play in the NBA. He has enough tools to do it. It might not be next year or the year after but I think he'll play there one day if he stays after it.

This is going to be a rough statement, so close your ears... Ruff's propensity to be an "only me" player at the end of the game makes him an excellent NBA prospect because that is what the NBA has turned into.

Ruff has no chance to play in the NBA he is a nice college pg but lets be real. Ruff will make a nice living in Europe like most good valley players do.

If Ruff has "no chance" then what would you have said about the chances of Howard Nathan to play in the NBA back in the 1995?
I suspect most would have said less than "no chance".

You're right nobody could have predicted Howard Nathan's epic NBA career which included playing in 5 total games and averaging 2.6 points with .04 assists. He really lit the world on fire back in 95.

I do not think Ruffin will play in the NBA, but he has some definte NBA type skills. He is a very good on the ball defender, he handles the basketball with a strong authority in traffic, he has a good ability to make passes in traffic and has a decent outside shot.

He is very thin and short and I doubt he could hold up night in night out in the league and at best would be a couple of minute guy. But he would have to have every chip fall in his favor but there are plenty of guys who play and played in the league who are not any better then Ruffin.

If Chris Quinn, Koby Karl, Dan Dickau and Tyronn Lue can steal money no reason that Ruffin cant either. Right situation at the right time.

I don't think anyone here is arguing that the MVC should be considered a major conference. And we have always conceded that the MVC doesn't get the 5-star kids that are more likely to end up in the NBA because they have such supreme talents. But the MVC teams compensate with overachievers, great shooters, great coaching, and kids staying in school 4 years.

There are players in the NBA that aren't much different than Ruffin. Troy Hudson has made a lot of money as an NBA point guard, but Ruffin possesses much better PG skills.

The Bulls have a kid on their roster this year named Andre Barrett--

a 5'10" point guard from Seton Hall, who I also believe isn't as talented nor had as good a college career as Ruffin. Yet has has hung around the NBA for 4 years.
There are a few others, but for every 5'10" PG that makes it to the NBA, there are thousands who never get the opportunity. The odds are small, but it all comes down to opportunity.

Hey-- he played in the NBA, why are you trying to disparage that fact?

Anyway...my point stands.....that there were fewer people who would have ever thunk Nathan woulda made the NBA than there are thinking DRuff will.
I think it is unlikely, but he probably has more chance than any of the previous three MVC Players of the Year (Tatum, Miller, Brooks),
since ball handling is a skill that even kept Muggsy Bogues in the League for 14 seasons
(it sure wasn't his scoring or rebounding).
