UAB's DeMarcus Cousins

tornado

New member
DeMarcus Cousins is the #2 ranked kid in the Rivals Top 150 for 2009,
and similarly everyone else also has the kid in the top 10.

He verballed to UAB...a very surprising move for a kid so highly rated to commit to a mid-major...and then the rumors started that he was still being hit on by other schools and that he might change his mind..

Now, guess what..he is balking at signing a LOI...

I can't say I blame him. I'd want to know the guy who brought me in is going to be there, develop me in his system, and give me plenty of PT and exposure.

He did drop in some ratings, but then he had a tremendous summer playing AAU, dominating at some events, and most services put him back near the top of the 2009 class.

When Cousins verballed to UAB, why didn't his ratings drop? UAB is a mid-major, yes?

2 answers....actually HE DID drop.....scout.com had him at #3 and immediately dropped him to #10, but...
the real reason he didn't drop like the other mid-major verbals, is because everyone from scout, to Rivals, to Van Coleman knows full well that he is NOT really a serious mid-major verbal........he's not going to end up at UAB and he will still end at a top D-I/BCS school, so why bother to drop the kid.

It now appears official. DeMarcus Cousins, the 2009 highly ranked big man who verballed to midmajor UAB, did not sign during the early signing period. He now tells Scout.com that he is back on the market--

It's a premium article, but in it he says he is now open to offers from other colleges. One other college coach didn't waste any time visiting Cousins to recruit him. Is anyone surprised who it was?--

"Scout.com learned, and Hughley confirmed, that Memphis head coach John Calipari was in town to see Cousins this week. Though Calipari was the first head coach to see Cousins post-signing period, he won??™t be the last."

or if he goes to Kansas or Kansas State they'll make his mom the university president and his AAU coach a $450,000 per year assistant.

With the commitment of Cousins, Memphis now has perhaps the best 2009 recruiting class in the country.
Cousins is rated the #2 center in the 2009 class, and they already have a commitment from Xavier Henry, the #1 shooting guard in the 2009 class.
They also have commitments from 2 of the top juco players in the country, and another talented wing.
Now the #1 point guard is said to also be leaning toward Memphis. John Wall, the top unsigned player in the country, said yesterday that Memphis is his leader.

How does Calapari do this? Do they have killer facilities? They seem to have a very good fan base and their arena looks real nice. What is the campus like? He must be a great sales man because for a non BCS school he get's some great recruits year after year.

No, actually Memphis' facilities are not anywhere close to the best, and not as good as most Big Ten, Big East, SEC, and ACC schools.
He is one of the best "salesmen" among Div I coaches.

But what appeals to the kids he recruits is that they think Calipari, with his NBA connections, can get them to the NBA quickly, sooner than other coaches.

I don't know what other promises he makes recruits, but a recruit can also be swayed by promises of playing time, and other "perks".;-)

I'm going to quote myself...

...he does a great job of paying them...
