FYI, two of my kids were scholarshipped Divn. I athletes at BCS schools and had many, many things written about them in PJS Sports. I cannot ever recall over the years anything that was negative, cutting, or incorrectly written about them.
This raises the issue that, I think, is what most Bradley fans have against the PJS coverage. There are a lot of negative things that happen in high school, college, and pro sports, but the PJ Star rarely ever reports, and even more rarely writes editorial columns about other teams or sports like they do with Bradley.
When it comes to Bradley, they seem to relish writing multiple stories and editorials about anything they can find or perceive as negative.
I won't repeat all the examples our posters have pointed to over the years (and there are many), but one that exemplifies what I am referring to was this--
A lot was made of some supposed illegal contact the PJ Star accused Bradley and Coach Jim Les had with Marcellus Sommerville, while he was still a student-athlete at Iowa. This story was based on something Marcellus' dad told the PJS, which he later said was a mistake, and that he had his timeline wrong. In fact, Mr. Sommerville later said no illegal contact was ever made, and that it was not until Marcellus had left Iowa and transferred to Southwestern Illinois College that the contact was made. This all happened around the time that New Mexico was proven to have had illegal contact with Danny Granger (after they repeatedly denied it, and before cell phone records were obtained proving it), and Bradley filed a complaint with the NCAA over it. The PJS reported all about the supposed illegal contact with Marcellus, and I recall the sports editor writing a column taking Jim Les to task for this, and accusing the AD of hypocrisy for filing a complaint in the Granger case, but ignoring this phony charge of tampering with Sommerville.
But when Mr. Sommerville came out with his correction, the PJ Star never reported that, and never retracted their accusations.
Again, I don't have time to bring out all the similar issues our fans here have had with the PJ Star reporting, but they go back many years. Other nearby D1 schools have had worse player discipline issues, and yet the PJ Star gives them a pass, and reports and editorializes in depth about less serious issues at Bradley.
The dramatic difference in the way the PJS reported on the Jamar Smith issues (overly sympathetic and understanding) versus the way they have gone after Bradley players who are in the news is like night and day. And in the past there have been some low blows, such as the accusation of Jim Les associating with people and taking the expedient route, rather than the principled one, that were never explained.
Personally, I couldn't care less. But as can be seen here on the message board, an awful lot of fans do see a disparity in the way these things are covered.
